Figures have shown that the number of British tourists travelling to Rhodes rose significantly in 2010. Online travel experts Travelmatch believe this surge has been driven by the island’s many excellent hotel options.

Recent figures have shown that the number of tourists travelling to the Greek island of Rhodes increased dramatically last year: in 2010, 267,000 Brits travelled to this destination, a 7.5% increase over the 248,000 who ventured there in 2009. Alex Francis of travelmatch.co.uk says his company has observed a similar trend. He comments: “Over the past year Rhodes has been one of our more popular destinations as customers have flocked there to enjoy its wonderful weather and luxurious hotels.”

British travellers made up a significant portion of visitors to Rhodes during this period, as Germans and Brits accounted for a large segment of the market. Francis believes that this destination appeals to British people due to its accessibility. He states: “It is very easy for our customers at Travelmatch to get there. Indeed, the area is serviced by direct flights from the London area and you can get to Rhodes in a matter of hours. This convenience has made it a great option for families looking to escape and take in some Mediterranean sun.”

Francis believes that the growing popularity of Rhodes also owes to the changing image of the island and their collection of excellent hotels. He concludes: “In the past this destination was associated with wild party weekends which obviously didn’t appeal to many families. The island has done a great job of changing this image and they have focused on developing excellent accommodation which is ideal for couples, families and individuals looking for some luxury. We offer great hotel options like Holiday Village Rhodes which provide our customers with everything they need for a fantastic, relaxing time on this beautiful Greek island.”
