$24 million to be injected into economy; BESydney highlights social legacies

Business Events Sydney (BESydney) has been instrumental in securing the IUCN World Parks Congress for the harbour city in 2014. The event, to be held at Sydney Olympic Park, is set to attract 3,000 delegates and inject around $24 million into the New South Wales (NSW) economy.

Held only once every 10 years, the event win is a huge coup for Australia and represents an outstanding opportunity to profile the nation’s impressive conservation achievements and expertise to the world.

“Securing the IUCN World Parks Congress has involved both a whole-of-industry and whole-of-government approach. It is brilliant to see this hard work return such a favourable result for Australia,” said Lyn Lewis-Smith, CEO of Business Events Sydney.

“The event will deliver an estimated $24 million for our visitor economy. It will also see world conservation leaders gather in Sydney to debate, innovate and collaborate on the most pragmatic solutions to conservation and developmental change. This opportunity for Australians to exchange knowledge with global counterparts and to showcase local expertise, at a time when conservation is high on our national agenda, is so timely.”

“BESydney continues to champion the message that the benefits of business events extend beyond the congress doors and have broader social impacts on our industries, economies and communities through their inherent knowledge exchange, networking and debate of industry issues.

“The IUCN World Parks Congress is a perfect example. Yes, our hotels, retailers and event supply companies will benefit from the congress being held in Sydney. Our local industry professionals will also benefit from the valuable network building, collaborative thinking and up-skilling that will take place. And ultimately, future generations will be the real beneficiaries of the outcomes of the event in 2014.”

The international assessment panel was particularly impressed by the facilities and green spaces on offer at Sydney Olympic Park.

“We look forward to welcoming the IUCN World Parks Congress delegates to Sydney Olympic Park in 2014.

Earlier this week, Rotary International also announced that its 2014 International Convention will move to Sydney Olympic Park which is a great demonstration of the quality and flexibility of our business event facilities. It is the diversity of facilities, event options and expertise that we can offer high calibre events which is underpinning our business event success” comments Alan Marsh, CEO, Sydney Olympic Park Authority.

The Australian Government and New South Wales Parks worked in partnership with BESydney to achieve the successful event bid.
