Copenhagen has set a new record for the number of its eco-certified hotel rooms. The number of certified hotels has increased by over 980% … during the last five years and, today, 71% of the city’s hotel rooms are certified as environmentally friendly.
As the Capital of Sustainable Meetings, Copenhagen is a frontrunner when it comes to eco-certified accommodation. According to the latest report, a record of 71% of the Danish capital’s hotel rooms are certified with an internationally recognised eco-certification.
Most recently, both the apartment hotel Stay Copenhagen and the Andersen Boutique Hotel in Copenhagen have been awarded the Green Key. But the latest increase in the number of eco-certified hotel rooms is largely as a result of all of the First hotels in the city receiving Green Key certification.
Even greener
Copenhagen is known as one of the most environmentally friendly cities in the world, so organising a sustainable event here is no great challenge. The city has certified experience in hosting state-of-the-art events with a sustainable profile.
In fact, Copenhagen was the first city ever to host an eco-certified international political summit when some 30,000 people attended the UN’s Climate Change Conference, COP 15, in 2009 and we continue to welcome sustainable events, and expand our experience.
In 2012 Denmark hosted the presidency of the European Union. More than 100 meetings were organised according to the sustainable event management system, ISO20121, making it the most sustainable European Union presidency ever.
Strict environmental requirementsÂ
In 2012, the Danish steering committee for the hotel and venue eco-certification, the Green Key, tightened up the requirements for its Green Key label, placing even greater demands on companies within the hospitality industry seeking to brand themselves as ‘green’.
In order to be awarded the Green Key, companies need to meet a number of strict environmental standards that are continuously updated. The standards includes major energy savings, waste sorting and special environmental requirements to their sub-suppliers together with an environmental policy and a continuous performance to improve the entire energy work.
