40% of the 1.2 billion international tourist arrivals in 2015 was driven by cultural motivations

Culture will constitute one of the principal ingredients and attractions of almost all the exhibitors and destinations present at FITUR.

Of the nearly 1.2 billion international tourist arrivals recorded in 2015 worldwide, 40% was essentially driven by cultural motivations, a figure that will continue to rise in the coming years. This is the understanding of the World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) in its report on Synergies between Tourism and Culture. And of course culture will constitute one of the principal ingredients and attractions of almost all the exhibitors and destinations present at FITUR.

In fact, the role that creative tourism can play in the protection and promotion of the material and intangible heritage, together with its ability to generate socioeconomic benefits, was debated at the recently staged International Congress on World Civilisations and Creative Tourism in which the UNWTO and the Tourism Ministry of the Republic of Bulgaria participated.

The Congress, which was held in the Bulgarian capital, studied how a civilisation can be brought back to life thanks to collaboration with the creative industries such as architecture, design, the arts, technology and science while contributing to the sustainable development of tourism.
