HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN TO NAME QUEEN ELIZABETH

HER MAJESTY THE QUEEN TO NAME QUEEN ELIZABETH

Cunard Line is pleased to confirm that Her Majesty The Queen will name the company’s new Queen Elizabeth, the third Cunard ship to bear the name, at a ceremony to take place in Southampton on Monday 11 October 2010.

The naming will be a milestone in British maritime history and will be a major event of worldwide interest.

Peter Shanks, Cunard President and Managing Director, comments:

“The naming of a Cunard Queen is a very special occasion and this will be an historic event in the true sense of the word. The Queen launched Cunard’s Queen Elizabeth 2 in 1967 and named our current flagship, Queen Mary 2, in 2004. We are both honoured and proud that Her Majesty will name our new liner Queen Elizabeth.”

Her Majesty was also present at the age of 12 at the launch of the first Queen Elizabeth on 27 September 1938 when she accompanied her mother, Queen Elizabeth, to Clydebank for the launch.

The Naming Ceremony will take place in Southampton on Monday 11 October and the ship will set sail on her maiden voyage the following day.

Stena Line Britannica to Launch in October 2010

Stena Line Britannica to Launch in October 2010

LONDON, August 9, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — Stena Line has announced that launch of the Stena Britannica, one of two of the largest superferries in the world, will take place in October 2010. Joining the Stena Hollandica on Stena Line’s North Sea route to Holland, the two ships will together offer the most modern ferry fleet in the world.

No expense has been spared in building the ferries of the future. The launch of Stena Britannica (http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/our-ships/stena-britannica/) follows Stena Hollandica, which entered service in May, together representing Stena Line’s largest ever investment of over GBP375 million.

The ships will together sail the route between Harwich and Hook of Holland (http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/our-ships/stena-britannica/), offering daily day and overnight sailings in both directions. Onboard, there are 538 cabins, each fitted with Dux beds, the Swedish luxury brand beds also found in the Burj Al Arab hotel in Dubai, and modern en suite bathrooms with Hansgrohe fittings. Larger windows provide a feeling of space and light, while extra touches, such as the complimentary Piper-Heidsieck Champagne in the Captain’s Class cabins, add to the first class service onboard.

A world away from the traditional ferries of years gone by, the Stena Line Superferries (http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/our-ships/stena-hollandica/) offer onboard services including free Wi-Fi for all, mobile reception throughout the crossing and satellite television in lounges and cabins. There are also buffet and a la carte restaurants, a cinema, bar, lounge, media room and internet corner. For families, there are children and teenager zones, plus 12 kennels for dogs and a wooden-decked sundeck to allow passengers to relax outdoors during their journey.

Designed to have a low environmental impact, each Superferry (http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/our-ships/stena-hollandica/) is built in line with Stena Line’s Energy Savings Programme. Eco-friendly features on the new Superferries include catalytic converters, an improved hull design, highly efficient engines and better combustion rates, all helping to reduce environmental impact. The ferries (http://www.stenaline.co.uk/ferry/) have facilities to recycle glass, cardboard and food waste onboard, while solar film on all windows excludes up to 82% of the sun’s radiant heat, reducing the energy used by the onboard cooling system.

The largest ferries of their type in the world in terms of combined passenger and freight capacity, each is capable of transporting 230 cars, 300 freight vehicles and 1,200 passengers.

Departing twice daily, the crossing takes approximately 6.5 hours, with a choice of day or night sailings in each direction. Departures from Harwich leave at 09:00 and around 23:45 each day, and at 14.30 and around 22:00 from the Hook of Holland, with early boarding possible to enable passengers to dine or relax before departure, meaning there’s still enough time for a good night’s sleep.

Lead in fares start at just GBP49 one-way for a car and driver, plus GBP12 per additional adult or GBP6 per additional child (up to 15 yrs, under fours travel free). With a similar pricing structure to low fares airlines, as the cheaper fares sell out, the prices on popular crossings will rise, so those booking early make the largest savings. Cabins are compulsory overnight and optional for day sailings, and start from just GBP14 per person one-way, based on two sharing.

NEW MSC CRUISES FLAGSHIP CONFIRMED

NEW MSC CRUISES FLAGSHIP CONFIRMED

MSC FANTASTICA UNDER CONSTRUCTION BY STX FRANCE
WILL BE 12TH SHIP IN THE MSC CRUISES FLEET

MSC Cruises and STX France announced today, Friday 23rd of July, the conclusion of the legal process that finalizes the order of MSC Fantastica, a new ‘Fantasia’ class cruise ship (technically called U32), and the 12th in the MSC Cruises fleet.

Following a press conference in St-Nazaire this morning, French President Nicolas Sarkozy visited the STX France ship yards together with Mr Gianluigi Aponte, President of MSC, Mr Piefrancesco Vago,  MSC Cruises CEO and Mr Hardeley, General Manager of STX France. The official delegation also included Christine Lagarde, French Minister of Economic Affairs and Christian Estrosi, Minister of Industry.

The process began on Monday 1st March with the signature of a Letter of Intent but, given the various legal and financial interlocutors involved, took some time to complete.

An important factor in the success of the project was the financial backing provided by French financial institutions, and especially by Coface, the French Export Credit Agency, making it possible for the vessel to be delivered as required by MSC Cruises by the end of spring 2012.

“We are very pleased that this important contract with MSC is now confirmed,” said Jacques Hardelay, General Manager of STX France, “and we look forward to continuing the long-standing relationship between the teams of MSC Cruises and STX France for the successful delivery of this magnificent vessel”.

Pierfrancesco Vago, CEO of MSC Cruises, added: “We are delighted at the confirmation of this important investment, a sign of the success of our ambitious growth strategy, and we would like to thank all those who have made it possible. Together with STX France, we are now keen to focus our energies on further enhancing MSC Cruises’ leading positioning within the world’s cruise industry. MSC Fantastica will build on the success of the ‘Fantasia’ prototype, appreciated by more and more guests as unique its class thanks to innovate features like the MSC Yacht Club, the ship within a ship offering unprecedented levels of privacy and personalized service.”

MSC CRUISES LAUNCHES 2011 MED AND EX-UK BROCHURES

MSC Cruises is delighted to announce the launch of its 2010/2011 Northern Europe and Mediterranean brochures, which are also available to download from MSC Cruises’ website at www.msccruises.co.uk

The new brochures, tailored specifically for the UK market, are full of important information and feature colourful images which bring the world of MSC to life. A new layout makes them concise and, easy to read and focuses on the most interesting details for holiday planners, from route maps and ship plans, to special offers, services and amenities for guests with disabilities.

A double page within both brochures highlights the incredible range of special promotions that MSC Cruises has launched, including the new early booking saving, celebration fares, family rates, single specials and much more.

MSC Cruises is again offering free cruising for children up to the age of 18 when sharing a cabin with two adults (paying for flights, port taxes and transfers only where applicable), and the fantastic facilities onboard available for children are also listed, from the entertainment and clubs to the Teen Card for extra freedom.

The benefits available to members of the MSC Club for regular guests are also detailed.

The Northern Europe brochure is entirely dedicated to MSC Opera, which will sail in 2011 from Southampton making the 2011 Ex-UK program totally new, with exciting itineraries calling at ports in France,  Spain and Portugal, as well as Northern Europe.

The brochure dedicates a page explaining the ‘British touches’ which were introduced specifically for the UK market who chose to cruise Ex-UK, which includes afternoon tea, wine tasting and complimentary tea and coffee, served at the end of each meal.

The Mediterranean brochure highlights the amazing itineraries available for passengers wishing to frequent the beautiful sunny Med. As Fantasia class flagships MSC Splendida and MSC Fantasia sail here, the brochure dedicates a section to outline the benefits of choosing the MSC Yacht Club.

For the first time, MSC Cruises has clearly displayed prices for ‘cruise only’ and ‘fly and cruise’ giving passengers two clear prices, making it easier for them to decide whether to buy the full package, or just the cruise.

MSC Cruises full brochure containing all itineraries on the whole MSC fleet will be available online shortly for agents and consumers to browse and download.

POSITIVE RESULTS FOR THE “GET ON BOARD FOR CHILDREN” PROJECT SHOW MSC CRUISES STRONG COMMITMENT TO UNICEF

POSITIVE RESULTS FOR THE “GET ON BOARD FOR CHILDREN” PROJECT SHOW MSC CRUISES STRONG COMMITMENT TO UNICEF

THE PROJECT

A unique “Get on board for Children” project initiated just under a year ago by MSC Cruises to support an innovative UNICEF initiative in Brazil to combat poverty and inequality by ensuring better and more equal quality education opportunities is showing positive progress on a daily basis.

The project is a result of a three-year partnership agreement signed on 7 July 2009 by MSC Cruises to support the UNICEF Platform for Urban Centres in Brazil which aim to assist disadvantaged children in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

THE METHOD

The initiative is based on a bottom-up integrated approach in which the community is seen as a vital part of the solution.

THE MAIN ACTIVITIES PROMOTED

In recent months a total of 7333 people living in the favelas – namely 4331 in Rio de Janeiro and 3002 in São Paolo – were interviewed in order to map out and list their most urgent needs. It is the most complete survey ever carried out for disadvantaged communities and it highlights, among other pressing issues, the general lack of basic education services and absence of free transportation to and from school.

In addition 204 Youth Ambassadors were selected, trained and given scholarships to monitor local networks on a permanent basis and help with the social mobilization of communities. In particular they were expected to encourage younger members in the communities to participate in workshops and forums and assist with evaluations of their respective situations.

Following on from this, 80 community youth members aged between 13 and 18, as well as students from public schools, were given the opportunity to convey the major concerns and needs arising out of these workshops to the mayors of Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo during an official presentation.

One of the objectives of the Platform for Urban Centres is to boost opportunities in all the possible areas, from education to health and social assistance, from protection from HIV/AIDS to culture, recreation, sport as well as urban infrastructure. In 2009 alone, 108 themed workshops and 90 forums were organized and thanks can largely be attributed to the “MSC for UNICEF” partnership, which mainly support the educational goals of the Platform.

As a result several “Communication in Education” training workshops were held for the promotion of community leaders as well as courses for apprentices and young entrepreneurs, social workers and sports coaches. In addition five vocational courses were implemented for Human Resources Assistant, Supply Assistant, Finance Assistant, Register Assistant and Event Planner.

Testimonial

It is the kind of positive action that has made some youngsters proud of what can be achieved.

“…before there was no sense in life (…) the Platform gave me the opportunities, now I know what it feels like sitting with a debating team and listing what improvements are necessary for my community…”  said Michel Santos Ribeiro, Youth Ambassador in São Paulo.

MSC for UNICEF general objectives:

• Gain the support of schools: aim is to have 254 schools are participating in the initiative.

• Organise biannual seminars for local authorities focusing on challenges and solutions for the improvement of school education within the favelas

• Support and provide training for 528 staff members of local authorities in order to promote democratic school administration and provide full-time education

• Run workshops for 528 school coordinators and teachers with instruction on how to improve education, involve local communities and employ alternative teaching and learning methods in socially disadvantaged areas in an active manner

• Assist and support working groups and youth ambassadors in their efforts to create awareness of the project and motivate the community

• Encourage pupils to participate in the improvement of school environments by promoting the maintenance of school infrastructure and mutual respect with the aim of curbing violent behavior in schools. Aim is to have 1270 pupils involved.

• Encourage pupils to participate in local school education surveys. So far 7620 pupils are involved.

Successful performance of TUI AG in short financial year 2009 despite economic crisis

Successful performance of TUI AG in short financial year 2009 despite economic crisis

tui agHanover, 15 December 2009.

Group profit of 401 million euros
Growth of around 5 per cent in operating earnings in core business Tourism
Significant reduction in net debt
Outlook for 2009/2010: operating earnings expected to be stable

TUI AG successfully completed its short financial year (1 January to 30 September) and generated Group profit of around 401 million euros (9M 2008: 45 million euros). This was essentially attributable to the proceeds from the sale of Hapag-Lloyd AG but also improved earnings by Tourism. In spite of the difficult overall framework resulting from the economic crisis, operating earnings (underlying EBITA) in the Tourism Sectors TUI Travel, TUI Hotels & Resorts and TUI Cruises rose by around 5 per cent to 696 million euros (9M 2008: 664 million euros). Earnings per share grew to 1.25 euros (9M 2008: 0.07 euros). ‘This successful development clearly shows that our Tourism business is fundamentally healthy and sustainable’, said TUI CEO Dr Michael Frenzel.

As expected, Group turnover decreased by around 14 per cent to around 13.1 billion euros (9M 2008: 15.2 billion euros) due to declines in customer volumes in Tourism. Net debt totalled around 2.3 billion euros at the end of the short financial year 2009 and was thus reduced substantially (9M 2008: 2.8 billion euros). The equity ratio grew by 1.1 percentage points to 17.6 per cent.
Frenzel emphasized that the strategy of flexible capacity planning had paid off within TUI Travel. ‘Following years of very strong growth orientation, the sector has now developed into a yield-oriented industry’, said Frenzel. And he continued: ‘The tourism sector has matured.’ For the current financial year 2009/2010, the TUI CEO considers the Group to be well prepared. ‘Even if 2010 will continue to be impacted by the global economic crisis, we expect operating earnings in our core business to post a stable performance’, said Frenzel. The further development of unemployment rates and the resulting consumer propensity in the large source markets will have an essential impact on the development of business in Tourism.

Below the bottom line, operating earnings by the Continuing Operations are expected to rise slightly. As of financial year 2010/2011 TUI AG expects turnover and operating earnings to rise again, provided the economy picks up again. TUI CEO Frenzel also formulated additional goals: ‘The purpose of our asset streamlining programme already announced in August and the continuation of our restrictive investment policy is to reduce our net debt further, improve our credit rating and create leeway for the strategic development of our Group.’

Detailed development of Tourism

In the short financial year 2009, turnover by Tourism declined by 14 per cent to 13.1 billion euros against the comparative period in 2008, a trend primarily attributable to the lower business volume of TUI Travel and the weakening of sterling in the course of the year.
In the short financial year 2009, the turnover generated by TUI Travel decreased by 14 per cent to 12.6 billion euros (9M 2008: 14.6 billion euros) due to currency and capacity effects. Underlyling EBITA grew by 10 per cent to 571 million euros (9M 2008: 520 million euros). The main reason for the rise in operating earnings was the delivery of synergies. At the same time, margins in the Mainstream business increased slightly despite a decline in demand. The weakening of sterling in the course of the year, by contrast, had an adverse effect on TUI Travel’s performance.

The Group’s Hotel Sector operated a total of 243 hotels with a capacity of 154,000 beds as at the end of the short financial year. Turnover by TUI Hotels & Resorts declined slightly by –5 per cent due to the economic situation and totalled 276 million euros (9M 2008: 290 million euros). Operating earnings (underlying EBITA) were 123 million euros, down 7 per cent against the comparative figure in 2008 of around 133 million euros. The decline was caused by the impact of the new H1N1 flu and lower customer volumes from the major source markets, partly offset by cost savings. Average occupancy of hotels across all brands declined to 76 per cent (9M 2008: 83 per cent) in analogy to the development of turnover and earnings. Due to investments already initiated before the financial crisis, the capacity of TUI Hotels & Resorts rose slightly by around 5 per cent in the short financial year 2009.

Turnover by the Cruises Sector decreased by around 9 per cent against the sound performance in the comparative period in 2008. As TUI Cruises is measured at equity no turnover is carried for these operations, the development of turnover exclusively relates to Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten. Underlying EBITA by the Sector fell substantially in the short financial year and accounted for 1.3 million euros (9M 2008: 11 million euros). Earnings included proportionate start-up costs for TUI Cruises of –4 million euros. The load factor of the Hapag-Lloyd Kreuzfahrten fleet amounted to 76 per cent in the period under review, down on the comparative period in 2008 (80 per cent). The average rate per passenger and day was 427 euros, slightly up on the previous year. The load factor on the first TUI Cruises ship was 83 per cent in the first year of operation. The average rate per passenger and day was 174 euros.

Detailed development of Hapag-Lloyd AG

Following the sale of the majority stake in Hapag-Lloyd AG, TUI AG still holds a financial investment of 43.3 per cent in the shipping company. Proportionate at equity earnings have no longer been included in the performance indicator EBITA since the second quarter of the short financial year 2009. All disclosures presented below are shown on a 100 per cent basis from Hapag-Lloyd’s perspective in order to facilitate better assessment of the operative business. Turnover in the short financial year 2009 fell substantially by around 29 per cent to around 3.3 billion euros (9M 2008: 4.6 billion euros). Due to the global economic crisis, transport volumes and freight rate levels declined by 17.4 per cent and 22.8 per cent, respectively. Underlying earnings by Container Shipping decreased by 886 million euros to -675 million euros in the short financial year (9M 2008: around 212 million euros). For the financial year 2009/2010 recovery tendencies are expected in the container shipping market. Overall, however, profit contributions by Hapag-Lloyd are expected to be negative in the current financial year.

Seven Celebrity Godmothers Inaugurate the World’s Largest and Most Revolutionary Cruise Ship

Seven Celebrity Godmothers Inaugurate the World’s Largest and Most Revolutionary Cruise Ship

oasis namedMIAMI, Dec., 2009 – Royal Caribbean International officially named its newest cruise ship, Oasis of the Seas, during an elaborate maritime celebration designed especially for the world\’s largest and most revolutionary cruise ship. Putting a new twist on one of maritimes longest standing traditions, the global cruise line was honored to have not one, but seven celebrity godmothers – Gloria Estefan, Daisy Fuentes, Shawn Johnson, Keshia Knight Pulliam, Michelle Kwan, Jane Seymour and Dara Torres – preside over the festivities. The celebration took place throughout the seven signature neighborhoods onboard Oasis of the Seas, culminating with the traditional Champagne bottle breaking ceremony followed by a fireworks display in the AquaTheater, the ship\’s dazzling oceanfront theater. Video of the event is available on the ship\’s dedicated website, www.OasisOfTheSeas.com.

Marking the finale of 10 days of preview sailings, the naming ceremony provided Royal Caribbean the opportunity to give back to the community, doubling as a one-night inaugural celebration-fundraiser to benefit the non-profit Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Celebrities including NBA legend Michael Jordan, Corbin Bleu of High School Musical and Olympic gymnast, Oasis godmother Shawn Johnson and Dancing With the Stars professional dancer, Karina Smirnoff were in attendance, granting the wishes of several children that wanted to meet them.

Royal Caribbean has enjoyed a long relationship with Make-A-Wish. Since 2000, the cruise line has hosted more than 1,300 children who wished to go on a cruise to destinations around the world and has contributed more than $2.8 million in in-kind services and $372,000 in discount savings through its Wishes at Sea program. Through employee and guest fundraising efforts, Royal Caribbean has also raised more than $480,000 and 460,000 frequent flier miles, used to secure airline tickets for children\’s wish travel and help the Make-A-Wish Foundation conserve critical financial resources. The cruise line donated 1,000 staterooms for this inaugural, once-in-a-lifetime event to the Make-A-Wish Foundation, with all proceeds benefiting the nonprofit organization.

As the ultimate expression of Royal Caribbean\’s legacy of imagination and innovation, Oasis of the Seas introduces unique industry \”firsts\” including a neighborhood concept – seven main themed areas providing guests with the opportunity to seek out relevant experiences based on their personal style, preference or mood.

Within these seven neighborhoods – Central Park, Boardwalk, the Royal Promenade, Pool & Sports Zone, Vitality at Sea Spa and Fitness Center, Entertainment Place and Youth Zone – are extraordinary elements such as the first living park at sea; a thrilling zip line that races diagonally nine-decks above an open-air atrium; an original handcrafted carousel; 28 multilevel urban-style loft suites boasting floor-to-ceiling windows; an amphitheater-style theater that serves as a pool by day and a dazzling ocean front theater by night; and an array of epicurean innovations that allow for new culinary experiences each day of a guest\’s cruise vacation.

No need to straighten your dicky bow; you’re on a naked cruise

No need to straighten your dicky bow; you’re on a naked cruise

barecruiseOnce a traditional, stuffy form of holiday, the typical cruise is moving away from formal dining and balls to more relaxed pastimes like buffets and buffness!

World Travel Market, the premier global event for the travel industry, delegates heard how naked cruising could sweep the travel and tourism industry in 2010.

Naturists holidays are growing in popularity with a number of operators offering a range of holidays for people to enjoy in the buff.

Norwegian Cruise Line General Manager Stephen Park told a cruise industry panel debate at WTM 2009 that naked cruising is poised to take off as cruise companies continue to diversify in the light of increasing competition.

“Niche cruising is something we will be seeing a lot of in the future,” he said. “Whether you’re a music lover, a nature lover or a naturist, there will be a cruise for you.”

MSC Cruises UK and Ireland Chairman Pete Pate agreed niche theme cruises would continue to grow, particularly in the UK as the sector attempts to attract the 80% of the UK market which has not been on a cruise holiday.

“Given the rate at which we are growing and the range of cruises offered it’s an idea which can not be ruled out,” Pate said. “However, MSC Cruises has no plan to launch a nudist cruise at present.”

Naked cruising currently exists in the US with Texas-based Bare Necessities first chartering a Costa Cruises vessel to take 2,200 naked passengers around the states in 1991.

Owners Tom and Nancy Tiemann now have three vessels and have just finished their 38th cruise, carrying more than 40,000 naked passengers in all.

So how does it actually work? Apparently passengers can choose to be naked anywhere on the ship – be that in the pool or at the blackjack table – but must put clothes on if opting for formal dining, although shorts, t-shirts and flip flops are perfectly acceptable.

The crew is not generally required to follow – erm – suit and passengers, who tend to be around the 45 and 55 year old age group, are mostly married or coupled with professions ranging from company CEOs to Priests.

Bare Necessities stresses that these cruises aren’t about sex, the rule is not to do anything outside your cabin that you wouldn’t do at home.

World Travel Market Fiona Jeffery said: “The cruise industry is growing so fast that it needs a variety of themes to attract new holidaymakers to the sector.

“Nudist beaches are popular all over the world, so why not naked cruising?”

Fain, chairman and CEO, Royal Caribbean Cruises, Ltd. “We felt it only fitting that our most revolutionary ship be named by an outstanding group of women who embody the same excellence in their respective fields.”
The seven women will take their posts to officially name the ship at a ceremony during a one-night inaugural celebration-fundraiser onboard Oasis of the Seas to benefit the non-profit Make-A-Wish Foundation, which grants the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions. Tickets for the once-in-a-lifetime event begin at $500 per person. Guests who wish to continue their adventure onboard will receive an exclusive discount price, beginning at $650 per person, on a four-night cruise package sailing to the cruise line’s private beach destination, Labadee, departing the morning following the event on Tuesday, Dec. 1 (rates based on double-occupancy and stateroom package). This important milestone for the innovative, family-owned cruise company highlights its impressive year-on-year growth. MSC Cruises estimates that 1,085,000 passengers will have cruised with the company by the completion of 2009; an impressive increase of 36% on 2008.
