Denmark sends The Little Mermaid to Shanghai

Copenhagen’s statue of The Little Mermaid, known from H.C. Andersen’s fairytale, began her journey to Shanghai on March 25. Once there she is to be part of EXPO 2010 in Shanghai. This means that around 70 million people will experience the iconic symbol of the Danish capital.

She has been beheaded twice and has had her arm cut off, but The Little Mermaid has never left her native country. On March 25 The Little Mermaid began her journey around the world to be part of the world exhibition EXPO 2010 in Shanghai from 1 May to 31 October 2010.

Her departure was marked by a Danish/Chinese ceremony at Langelinie, where the Minister for Economic and Business Affairs, Brian Mikkelsen, and the Lord Mayor of Copenhagen, Frank Jensen, wished her bon voyage.

Mermaid brings Danish lifestyle

The Little Mermaid will be situated in the Harbour Pool in the centre of the Danish Pavilion at EXPO 2010. Here visitors get the opportunity to try some of the best aspects of Danish city life themselves. They can ride around the Danish Pavilion on a city bike like a true Copenhagener or have a picnic on the roof top.

The loan of The Little Mermaid is part of a cultural exchange between Denmark and China. While in Shanghai, world renowned Chinese artist Ai Weiwei has created a video installation to be installed at her spot – so tourists visiting the waterfront of Copenhagen won’t be disappointed.

Brian Mikkelsen, Minister for Economic and Business Affairs:

- We participate in EXPO 2010 to brand Denmark and Danish values to the Chinese and all visitors from around the world who visit the Danish Pavilion. Our loan of the Little Mermaid to China shows that we Danes are interested in other cultures and want to share our art and cultural treasures with them.

Frank Jensen, Lord Mayor of the City of Copenhagen:

- We are proud to lend the Little Mermaid to China. I am convinced that she will be an excellent ambassador of Denmark, particularly since the Chinese already are very fond of Hans Christian Andersen and his fairytales. At the same time I am delighted that Ai Weiwei’s video installation will make it possible for the Danes to follow her throughout her journey.

“Live the Deal” – New Travel & Tourism Climate Initiative launched in Copenhagen

“Live the Deal” – New Travel & Tourism Climate Initiative launched in Copenhagen

LIVETHEDEALCopenhagen, Denmark/ Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates/Madrid, Spain 16 December – “Live the Deal”, an innovative, global campaign to help travel companies and destinations respond to Climate Change, reduce their carbon footprint and move to the Green Economy, was launched this week during the Copenhagen Climate Summit.

Announcing the new initiative, long time tourism green campaigner Geoffrey Lipman UNWTO Assistant Secretary-General said: “What Copenhagen represents is a new commitment by the world community towards sustainable low carbon growth patterns. The targets and mitigation actions that countries develop and negotiate through this process will be a new base for travel industry action. What we are providing is a very simple way to get behind the evolving government initiatives, to keep pace with changing patterns and to demonstrate that our sector is acting, not simply talking.” He added “We should not be ashamed to promote the growth of smart travel – clean green, ethical and quality – it’s the lifeblood of trade, commerce and human connection”.

“Live the Deal” follows the pattern established in the UN led Copenhagen Seal the Deal campaign by its single minded focus, its simplicity and its broad based engagement goals. It will seek to encourage the sector directly and through representative organizations.

It has been developed with the support of UNWTO, whose Secretary-General Taleb Rifai calls it “The kind of link between global policymaking and responsible tourism action that we are looking to inspire and encourage. Our sector fuels the economy, creates jobs and is one of the biggest development opportunities for the world’s poorest countries – and it can be a leader in the transformation to a green economy”.

The campaign will be underpinned by a simple carbon calculation tool that allows easy correlation with government targets and implementation measures, as well as a Think Tank and Annual Innovations & Investment Summit. The inaugural Summit will be in Abu Dhabi in the last quarter of the year. Live the Deal will be promoted by a multimedia video “We can take this Climate Change” from platinum album writer and singer Alston Koch which will be profiled around the world in 2010

The World’s Greatest Debate in Copenhagen

The World’s Greatest Debate in Copenhagen

copenhagen nimbWhen the lights are about to be turned off after days of intense meetings, the debate is not quite over after all. At one of the last day of the UN Climate Change Conference the biggest political names will gather for a global climate debate to conclude on the results of the summit. And the debate will be transmitted to around 300 million households.

The negotiations during the UN Climate Change Conference COP 15 taking place December 7-18, will be behind closed doors and security barriers in the city’s convention centre, The Bella Center. But why not open up the summit and invite the rest of the world to a debate about the summit’s results? That is the idea behind “The World’s Greatest Debate” a concept developed jointly by DR (the Danish Broadcasting Company) and BBC.

Tension to the last minute
The vision is to have the world’s biggest-ever TV broadcast debate about the climate when world leaders gather for one of the most important summits of modern times. “The World’s Greatest Debate” is the summit’s window to the people of the world, where answers will be demanded of world leaders about their concrete achievements at the summit.

Right up until a few days before the debate, it will not be clear which leaders will have the opportunity to take part. It depends who is in Copenhagen at the time and on the dynamics of the final phase of summit negotiations. DR and BBC World News are working with a number of different scenarios. However, it has already been decided that Stephen Sackur, the renowned host of the BBC programme HARDtalk, will be the moderator, and that the audience in the hall will consist of more than 1200 international students and people from NGOs and business.

The debate will be recorded live on tape and then be prepared for broadcast on DR and other major national TV channels, as well as running on BBC World immediately after the climate summit.

The event will take place in Koncerthuset, DR’s concert hall. Koncerthuset opened January 2009 and The World Greatest Debate will be staged in the main concert hall seating 1,800 people.

Unique partnership
The event will be transmitted to around 300 million households worldwide in a unique partnership between the Danish Broadcasting Corporation (DR) and BBC World News. Copenhagen Capacity and Wonderful Copenhagen have helped to set up the media partnership, which is also supported by the Marketing Denmark Foundation.

Copenhagen is greening up for the UN Climate Change Conference

Copenhagen is greening up for the UN Climate Change Conference

cop greenFrom December 7-18 the hopes of the planet will be focused on discussions being held in Copenhagen, as up to 12-15,000 people from around the world gather to attempt to reach a new global climate agreement at the UN Convention on Climate Change, COP 15.

Copenhagen offers numerous environmentally-labelled hotels and green-orientated convention centres, which makes the Danish capital an obvious choice for this globally anticipated climate summit.

The conference will be held at Bella Center, one of Europe’s leading convention centres, with a capacity of 20,000. Bella Center is constantly seeking ways to minimise its environmental impact, and will have reduced its Co2 emissions by 20% compared with 2007 numbers, before COP 15.

Green hotels – a reality for years
Copenhagen is well known as an environmentally friendly city thanks to its eco-labelled hotels; the highest consumption of organic foods per capita of its residents; and environmentally friendly transport options. As the rest of the world begins to discuss climate issues in earnest, sustainability has been a watchword of the city’s hotels for years.

The fact that COP 15 will be held in Copenhagen has prompted even more of the city’s hotels to get their environmental policies in order and optimise their efforts to become even more environmentally friendly. Today, close to 50% of its hotels are certified with an official environmental label, such as the EU Flower, the Nordic Swan Label, the Green Key or others.

Organic food
Sustainability is one of the main focal points when it comes to providing adequate and satisfactory catering at the COP15 and Denmark has chosen to guarantee a minimum of 65% organic food and beverages including fair-trade products such as coffee and tea.

It has also been decided that top rude materials, food and packaging has to comply with the standard requirements for acknowledged marking arrangements such as Max Havelaar, the European Union Eco Lable and the Nordic Swan -or equivalent. Furthermore, the food production will be characterized by low energy consumption and environmentally waste disposal.

Water
The ground water quality in Denmark is very high, therefore all potable water at the conference venue will be tap-water. This implies a considerable energy saving advantage because production, transportation and disposal of water bottles will be avoided.

Optimal Transport Logistics
The PCO MCI Copenhagen has established a database to handle all the hotel bookings. In the case of most bookings, the Danish Foreign Ministry will use the database to plan the optimal transport logistics to and from the Bella Center in order to minimise Co2 emissions from vehicles as much as possible.

Around 10-12,000 delegates and up to 3,000 journalists are expected to attend COP 15 in the Danish capital.

Music makes the people come together

Music makes the people come together

womexOne of the world’s most important international music events will take place in Copenhagen from 28 October – 1 November.

WOMEX is a major, intercultural music event which combines a congress with a trade fair and festival and takes place over five days every October. WOMEX is the most important international professional market of world music of every description, bringing together professionals from the worlds of folk, roots, ethnic and traditional music.

The international fair will feature concerts, conferences and screenings of documentaries and, according to the UNESCO Global Alliance for Cultural Diversity, ‘It contributes to networking as an effective means of promoting music and culture of all kinds across frontiers.’

Around 3,000 industry participants, 350 international artists, and 350 international journalists from 100 countries are expected, along with a large public attendance.

Copenhagen will host WOMEX in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

Copenhagen in the Top Ten

Copenhagen in the Top Ten

copenhagen nimbWith a total of 104 international congresses held in 2008, Copenhagen is one of the world’s most appealing congress cities – ahead of both London and Geneva.

According to the latest report from the Union of International Association (UIA), Copenhagen is the world’s 9th most popular destination for international congresses. This is based on figures from 2008, during which the city hosted the European Haematology Association, with 6,700 participants, and the European Society of Anaesthesiologists, with 5,000 participants, among other events. Both took place in Scandinavia’s largest convention centre, the Bella Center.

Meanwhile, 2009 is also shaping up to be a particularly good year during which Copenhagen will host a range of major congresses.

Steen Jakobsen, Congress Director at Wonderful Copenhagen CVB, says: “Fifteen of the many congresses we are hosting in 2009 have between 2,000 and 15,000 participants. This includes, for example, the IOC’s 121st session and 13th congress, and the UN Convention on Climate Change COP15.”

Major expansion ahead
Copenhagen’s success as a congress city is partly explained by the short distances between its hotels and conference facilities, as well as by the fact that Copenhagen Airport is Northern Europe’s main air traffic hub.

The city boasts an international reputation for its low crime rate; general efficiency levels; its cultural and entertainment attractions; and its selection of good restaurants. Meanwhile, the Copenhagen region’s dynamic research and scientific environment is recognized internationally – the region is particularly strong within the medical and IT fields.

Furthermore, the city’s facilities have expanded significantly during the last decade and continue to do so. Next year will see the opening of the Tivoli Congress Center, with space for 4,000 delegates in the heart of Copenhagen. And, before the end of 2011, the city’s hotel capacity will have expanded by over 30% to a total of 19,000 rooms.
