The European Commission has recently announced that Ljubljana (Slovenia) along with Essen (Germany), Nijmegen (The Netherlands), Oslo (Norway) and Umeå (Sweden) have been selected as the five finalists for the European Green Capital 2016 Award.
The Award is presented to one European city every year, commending its achievements in environmental sustainability. Ljubljana, Essen, Nijmegen, Oslo and Umeå have been shortlisted from 12 entries across Europe, and the Slovenian capital has been named a finalist for the second consecutive time.

The shortlisted cities will at a next step present their vision, their potential to act as a role model to other cities, and their communication strategy to the Jury in Copenhagen, the current European Green Capital, on 23 June 2014.

Together with this exceptional news, Ljubljana this year also celebrates 2000 years of Emona.
Two thousand years ago, the Roman city of Emona stood on the site of the present-day Ljubljana. In celebration of the anniversary, Ljubljana is hosting a vibrant programme of events and experiences aimed at evoking the atmosphere of Roman times. Slovenian meeting suppliers have seized this opportunity to incorporate into their programmes new ideas inspired by Ljubljana’s ancient citizens such as “Thematic Aemona Treasure Hunt”, a team building programme organized by Palma DMC.

More information about the team building programme is available by mail at mice@palma.si or on the web site www.palma-travel.eu. For more information about Ljubljana visit www.visitljubljana.com.
