Liberal Democrats Make it a Hatrick of Party Conferences at ACC Liverpool
ACC Liverpool, home to BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena, has announced that the Liberal Democrats will return for its third party conference at the venue.
The coalition government partner will stage its annual autumn conference in September 2014, and is likely to attract more than 7,500 attendees.
It will be the second time the Lib Dems have chosen to hold their most important date on the political calendar in the city and their third visit to Liverpool overall.
In 2008, they held their spring conference in Liverpool, returning two years later, in September 2010, for their main gathering, which was the first ever major party political event held at the waterfront venue.
Bob Prattey, chief executive of ACC Liverpool, said the return of the Lib Dems was the result of ACC Liverpool’s previous track record to deliver and years of building up a relationship with the party conference organiser.
He said: “Lib Dems coming to us for a third time is further confirmation that Liverpool is stronger than ever as a conference destination.
“The party came to us in our inaugural year in 2008, then again in 2010, so organisers know that we can deliver a first-class conference for delegates here at ACC Liverpool.
“Each time, the economic impact benefit for the city was terrific and we received positive feedback from delegates about the venue and the city.
“Our team, along with Liverpool Convention Bureau, have been in talks for many years with the Lib Dems, and with all the political parties, to come to the city to hold their key conferences. When conference finishes is doesn’t just stop there, there is a lot of continuous work that goes on behind the scenes.
“We want to build on the success of our hosting of last year’s Labour Party conference by attracting even more party political events. For now, we look forward to welcoming the Lib Dems to the city in two years’ time.”
The last time the party was in Liverpool, Nick Clegg, Deputy Prime Minister and Liberal Democrats leader, was joined in the city by 6,000 delegates and 1,600 global media. The event generated £10m for the city economy with 206 fringe meetings hosted at ACC Liverpool and around 300 additional fringe meetings taking place elsewhere in the city.
Lucy Billingsley, head of conference office at the Liberal Democrats, said: “We held our spring conference in Liverpool four years ago and returned for autumn season in 2010, both proved to be immensely successful.
“We are confident that 2014 will be just as positive and look forward to returning to such a vibrant and dynamic city.”
ACC Liverpool has already hosted the Labour Party Conference, in September last year, which saw 11,000 delegates descend on Liverpool, delivering a £15m boost to the city economy.
The venue is ideally located for high-security events of this nature, being effectively surrounded by water on three sides which creates a secure campus site and enables it to lockdown quickly and efficiently.
The Labour Party Conference saw maximum security procedures implemented and rigorous plans put into place in collaboration with Merseyside Police, Liverpool Convention Bureau and Liverpool City Council.
Joe Anderson, the newly-elected mayor of Liverpool, welcomed the news that the Lib Dems will be returning to Liverpool for the third time.
He said: “Large scale conferences are extremely positive as they give us an opportunity to show what Liverpool can offer as a conference and business destination.
“The fact that the Lib Dems are returning for a third time is proof in the party’s confidence in ACC Liverpool and the city. It shows that we are a national player when it comes to UK party politicals.”
Max Steinberg, chief executive of Liverpool Vision, added: “This is excellent news and it comes as no surprise to me that the Lib Dems wish to hold their annual gathering in Liverpool again, because there can be few better venues in the UK for conference delegates.
“We recently held the hugely-successful Global Entrepreneurship Congress at ACC Liverpool and the unanimous response from visitors was that Liverpool is a city like no other – beautiful and exciting with a broad range of attractions, hotels, restaurants and bars all within walking distance of this spectacular state-of-the-art complex, set in a stunning waterside location.
“Congratulations to Bob and his team, competition is fierce to hold conferences of this size and the economic prize is great. Whatever your political hue this benefits all of Liverpool.”

‘It’s Liverpool’ at EIBTM
ACC Liverpool, home to BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena, will promote destination Liverpool under the ‘It’s Liverpool’ brand to over 3000 European global meetings and events buyers next week at industry event, EIBTM. The team will introduce a host of new sales and marketing initiatives along with a development update on the venue’s expansion plans.
The team will announce plans for its newest addition; an adjoining Exhibition Centre, which will break ground in 2013 and be due for completion in 2014. The new space will offer up to 8,100m² of additional floor space making it the only interconnected arena, convention centre and exhibition facility in the UK.
As part of ACC Liverpool’s added value offer, this week the venue launched a delegate card packed with offers and privileges for some of the city’s best hotels, restaurants, bars and attractions exclusively for ACC Liverpool delegates. The delegate card will maximise the conference experience of business tourists during their time in Liverpool and enable them to fully embrace the cultural heritage of the North West city.
As well as adding value for delegates, ACC Liverpool has developed a CSR strategy to support clients by assisting with the impact and legacy of their events and helping clients forge relationships with third sector organisations in the city.
Under ACC Liverpool’s 5-year business plan, the venue will keep a close eye on technological trends and developments to ensure the offering is in line with, and capable of exceeding the expectations and demands of the market place. ACC Liverpool is currently in the testing stages of a white label event app which will be offered to clients in the New Year.
The appeal of the city to business visitors is increasing as the destination’s reputation grows; Liverpool has recently been voted as the UK’s friendliest city by Condé Nast Traveller. On the back of such accolades Liverpool is bucking the national trend with growth in tourism spend and visitors, representing Liverpool’s renowned warm welcome the city is well known for.
Kerrin MacPhie, Director of Sales, ACC Liverpool commented, “ACC Liverpool recently hosted the high profile Labour Party Conference and continues to perform on an international platform with delegates visiting the venue from every continent. We offer value and support from the outset, taking responsibility with our clients to achieve outstanding events.
“We are rounding up the year by welcoming the Beatles’ Paul McCartney for the final leg of his world tour and looking forward to welcoming Association Congress next summer and thereafter the build of the additional space in 2013. We are eager to share these messages to more buyers at EIBTM and see new demand come forward for our spaces over the next year.”
MacPhie will give an on-stand presentation on Wednesday 30th November at 1.15pm, detailing key messages including the Exhibition Centre and the major events coming to Liverpool next year.
ACC Liverpool will be exhibiting on Visit England Pavilion G270 at EIBTM 2011 at The Fira Gran Via venue in Barcelona, Spain, 29 Nov – 1 Dec.

Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists chooses ACC Liverpool for its 33rd annual congress
The Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) has announced ACC Liverpool, home to BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena, as the chosen venue for its 33rd British International Congress of Obstetrics and Gynaecology in 2013. The international annual congress will host over 1200 trainee, consultant and specialist obstetricians and gynaecologists from over 50 representative countries.
The three-day congress, organised by Hampton Medical Conferences, will take place 24-26 June 2013 and comprise meetings and seminars as well as exhibitors at ACC Liverpool, and a social programme at Liverpool Cathedral.
The RCOG put forward a bid for Liverpool as there were very few destinations in the UK that could comfortably accommodate large numbers of delegates under one roof as well as exhibition space and a range of hotel accommodation within walking distance.
Lynn Whitley, Director for meetings at RCOG said, “We put together the bid for Liverpool as it’s one of the few places we knew could cope with accommodating our growing demands. It’s great to know that they have the latest facilities and the venue is purpose built for meetings such as ours. The venue has integrated AV facilities which will be useful for us to webcast our meeting internationally and perform live demonstrations if necessary. We are really looking forward to our 2013 event just as I’m sure the delegates are keen to experience the city of Liverpool.”
Kerrin MacPhie, Director of Sales ACC Liverpool said, “We are delighted to be hosting the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists after winning the bid this year. ACC Liverpool has established an un-rivalled reputation across the medical sector due to our understanding of the demands of these types of events. This decision is a reflection of the commitment that we have to surpass expectations and really drive Liverpool forward as one of the UK’s leading destinations for meetings, events and exhibitions.”
ACC Liverpool opened in 2008 and has since made a name for itself within the medical sector due to its flexibility in hosting large scale associations of this kind as well as destination support, further confirming the city’s appeal to this sector.
Peace and Harmony reign at ACC Liverpool
ACC Liverpool has become the permanent home of a European Peace Monument dedicated to John Lennon.
The 18-foot sculpture, created by American artist Lauren Voiers, forms part of the global peace initiative which aims to position one sculpture of peace on each of the continents of the world.
The John Lennon Peace Monument now takes pride of place against the contemporary backdrop of ACC Liverpool, home to BT Convention Centre and its sister venue Echo Arena, which is set to play host to Paul McCartney, the greatest living Liverpool icon as he heads to his home town for a homecoming gig on 20th December.
Bob Prattey, CEO of ACC Liverpool, said: “We are very proud to have such a culturally important piece of art here at ACC Liverpool. John Lennon is a unique and enduring part of our city and it’s fantastic that UK and International visitors to ACC Liverpool will be able to visit the monument whilst they are with us. Whether a fan of John or the Beatles or just a lover of art, the monument is a striking symbol of Peace and we are privileged to have given it a home.”
ACC Liverpool takes expansion plans to IMEX America
ACC Liverpool, one of Europe’s newest, greenest and most technologically advanced conference and exhibition venues has joined forces with UK tourism body Meet England to target the US market for international conventions at major MICE exhibition this month, IMEX America 2011.
One of the UK’s most iconic cities, Liverpool, will have a presence in the USA next month when Kerrin MacPhie, Director of Sales for ACC Liverpool, promotes the venue and city as a conference destination to American conference and meeting buyers, agents and PCOs.
ACC Liverpool will showcase the flexible facilities of BT Convention Centre and inter-connected Echo Arena as well as the development plans for the adjoining 8,100m2 Exhibition Centre, due to open in 2014.
ACC Liverpool will present the venue as a world-class business tourism destination to over 2,000 attendees including a group of hosted buyers arranged by Visit Britain. As a member of ICCA, MacPhie will take the opportunity to attend the IMEX America Association Evening Networking event to further strengthen the venue’s relationships in the continent.
Known for its music heritage and greatest export, The Beatles, Liverpool has undergone a dramatic transformation in recent years to become a leading city for culture and tourism. Situated at the heart of the UK, Liverpool affords easy access for national and international delegates, with 2 major airports within a 45 minute drive and train links providing accessible routes into the city including a 2 hour service from London via Virgin Trains.
ACC Liverpool’s attendance at the exhibition follows in the footsteps of Liverpool’s presence at ASAE 2010 which marked the start of the city’s first ever concerted attempt to focus itself as a business tourism destination to the American market.
MacPhie said, “This is a fantastic opportunity to exhibit at the launch of IMEX America to show buyers how adaptable and cultural the city of Liverpool and ACC Liverpool are. Our award winning facilities and status as one of the top UK tourism destination make Liverpool attractive to the US market. Following ASAE we have seen a significant increase in enquiries from this region and we are keen to continue reinforcing our stance to the American market. I am very excited about meeting with more potential buyers who I know will be tempted into visiting and seeing what Liverpool has to offer.”
ACC Liverpool will be exhibiting on the Visit England booth 809, at IMEX America which takes place from October 11-13. IMEX America is a worldwide exhibition for incentive travel, meetings and events, taking place in Las Vegas and will include over 1800 exhibitions from across the world.
Liverpool praised by opposition leader for successful conference
The Leader of the opposition has praised Liverpool for being a “fantastic backdrop” for the Labour Party conference.
The city has enjoyed an estimated £15 million economic boost from the event, which has attracted 11,000 delegates including two thousand national and international press and media to the 5 day event held at ACC Liverpool, home to BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena.
The Right Honourable Ed Miliband MP, said: “Liverpool has been a fantastic host city and I would like to thank all the people and agencies involved in making our conference such a great success.
“Listening to people has always been at the heart of Labour Party conference and by holding conference in Liverpool many people have experienced conference for the first time.
“The city and its venues have been a fantastic back drop for a very successful conference.”
A record 500 fringe meetings, debates and discussions have taken place at venues across the city, and the city has been the backdrop for hundreds of hours of national TV coverage.
Flagship network television programmes such as BBC One Breakfast, the Andrew Marr show, Newsnight and Sky News have all broadcast live from in and around ACC Liverpool.
Bob Prattey, Chief Executive of ACC Liverpool, said: “We are proud to have welcomed the Labour Party Conference to the city and to ACC Liverpool.
“The conference has enabled us to showcase everything the city and our world-class venue has to offer, not least the talent of our team here at ACC Liverpool, the expertise of our partners across the city and the warm welcome that the people of Liverpool have once again provided.
“To have successfully delivered such a large-scale event, with the eyes of the world’s media upon us, has been a massive coup.
“We hope Mr Miliband, and all the delegates who attended, have enjoyed their time in Liverpool as much as we have enjoyed hosting them.”
Lorraine Rogers, Chief Executive of The Mersey Partnership – Tourist Board for Liverpool City Region said: “The Labour Party Conference has played a significant role in raising the profile of Liverpool City Region as an excellent conference destination which can stage high profile events.
“The conference has also provided a valuable opportunity to attract a huge amount of media interest – resulting in widespread TV coverage featuring stunning shots of the city centre and Waterfront shown live around the world. Feedback from delegates has been extremely positive, and we look forward to welcoming them back in the future.”
ACC Liverpool takes centre stage for the official welcome of Labour Party Conference 2011
ACC Liverpool Chief Executive Bob Prattey officially welcomed the Labour Party Leader Ed Miliband this weekend as the award-winning venue opened its doors to an expected 11,000 delegates for this year’s Labour Party Annual Conference 2011, 25 – 29 September.
2,000 national and international press and media are set to attend this year’s conference, with broadcasts from the BBC’S The Andrew Marr Show, Daily Politics Show and Breakfast News as well as coverage from ITN and Sky News transmitted live from ACC Liverpool, home to BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena throughout the week ahead.
The venue will be used to its full scope for the conference and its associated activities: keynote speeches by Ed Miliband and Harriet Harman will take place in the Echo Arena while breakouts and exhibitions will be held in the adjoining BT Convention Centre. Hall 1C will become a showcase for Young British Talent hosted by Eddie Izzard while another 500 fringe events will be hosted throughout the venue, in a marquee village adjacent and at various locations across the city.
The largest event ever held at ACC Liverpool, the Labour Party Conference represents one of the tightest security operations in the North West and has been rigorously planned between ACC Liverpool and city stake holders including Merseyside Police, Liverpool Convention Bureau and Liverpool City Council. Maximum security procedures are in place throughout the week facilitated by the venue’s ease of lockdown, effectively creating a secure campus site.
The Labour Party Annual Conference is expected to bring an economic benefit to the city of £15m and brings ACC Liverpool’s total contribution to the city economy to £500m since it opened in 2008.
Bob Prattey, CEO ACC Liverpool said, “Labour Party Annual Conference is widely recognised as being one of the most high profile events in the UK and we are delighted to be host venue and the central focus of the Labour Party’s activity. This is the largest scale event we have staged and we are very much looking forward to seeing the rigorous planning and logistics bear fruit when Ed Miliband takes centre stage on Tuesday for his keynote address.”
ACC Liverpool Chairman David McDonnell also commented: “The decision of Labour Party to bring their annual conference to Liverpool demonstrates that our venue and city can host events of national and international significance on a huge scale. This is down to the fact that organisations in both the private and public sector are able to work together towards a common aim.
“Praise must be given also to the people of the city for consistently laying on such a fantastic warm Liverpool welcome to conference-goers year after year after year.”
ACC Liverpool cultivates links in the city
BITC and YMCA see fruits of ACC Liverpool’s labour
As part of an on-going relationship with Business In The Community (BITC), staff from ACC Liverpool held their annual away on Wednesday 17th August with the support of BITC and the YMCA.
The 95-strong team from ACC Liverpool, led by CEO Bob Prattey actively helped develop and transform a plot of land in Speke, south of Liverpool city centre. The open space was regenerated into an allotment which the Liverpool Food Alliance will now be able to use to produce locally grown food for organisations such as the YMCA to benefit from.
Activities on the day included building a poly tunnel to grow and harvest tomatoes, fixing and painting fences and clearing the allotment making it into a cultivable space.
Bob Prattey, CEO, ACC Liverpool said, “We are really pleased to have held our second away day in partnership with organisations that directly benefit the local community. The team always enjoys getting involved, and as a business, we are lucky to be able to work with some incredible projects and charities throughout the city. It’s rewarding to see a project such as this come to fruition.”
Project facilitators, YMCA, partnered the venue with the Liverpool Food Alliance. Project development officer at the YMCA, Peter Boyle, said, “It means a lot to a front line homeless charity such as Dutch Farm to receive a considerable amount of hands-on help from ACC Liverpool’s staff. The kick start has launched the first operation of the Liverpool Food Alliance through the build of the poly tunnel. ACC Liverpool’s help is instrumental to fast forwarding our project and we are grateful for their help to the local community.”
The Liverpool Food Alliance has been created to produce local food for local people. By undertaking the project, ACC Liverpool has started a Liverpool wide food hub and created growing space for the homeless hostels to produce and sell food bringing in valuable funding.
Since opening, ACC Liverpool has contributed an estimated £500m in economic benefit to the local economy. The venue’s CSR credentials have led the venue to achieve zero waste to landfill and ISO4001 accreditation.
ACC Liverpool hosts summer showcase at Liverpool’s London Embassy
ACC Liverpool, comprising BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena, brought its latest instalment of London ventures in the form of a summer showcase event held on Wednesday 29th June 2011 at Liverpool’s Embassy in the capital.
The showcase comprised two events in one day – a sit down lunch in the afternoon for association clients and cocktails and canapés in the evening for corporate contacts. Guests had the chance to meet the team, get an update on the latest development plans for the new Exhibition and Events Complex and find out what Liverpool has to offer as a conference destination.
ACC Liverpool’s catering partner Heathcotes catered for both events and wowed guests with their delicious catering offer. The chance for Heathcotes to go ‘pop up’ in London for one day only, allowed ACC Liverpool to showcase its entire package to potential and existing clients.
‘Lunch at the Embassy’ was put on specifically for association clients, with over 35 guests including Royal College of Nursing, Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland, and the British Dental Association. ‘Summer Soiree’, the cocktails and canapés evening event, attracted 35 corporate contacts including BBC Worldwide which will host its event at ACC Liverpool in 2012 for the first time.
The summer showcase event is a first for the venue and comes hot off the heels of this year’s latest announcement of the major expansion plans at ACC Liverpool. The venue continues to deliver high profile events to include the Labour Party Conference in September as well as new corporate and association clients experiencing ACC Liverpool for the first time.
Kerrin MacPhie, Director of Sales, said, “As our annual end of year showcase has been a success for the last five years we decided to host a similar summer event to give our association and corporate clients another opportunity to meet the team in London. This year we have been lucky enough to have our caterers with us which has given us the chance to tell the full story of our product offering.”
Success for TMP’s International Visitor Hosts Programme
The Mersey Partnership (TMP) – Official Tourist Board for Liverpool City Region – has successfully co-ordinated a training programme to recruit and coach a new group of 24 International Visitor Hosts to greet overseas visitors as part of its Destination Welcome.
Liverpool City Region’s popularity with international visitors continues to grow thanks to its rich cultural heritage, stylish hotels and world class events, and the programme is part of TMP’s ongoing tourism development work to further strengthen the overall visitor experience.
Following interviews and a short audition, during which the applicants had to give a short talk on their favourite place in Liverpool, a total of 24 fluent language speakers were successful in securing places on the six-week course. The programme was completed with written and practical examinations, so the group could put into practice everything they had learned.
The visitor hosts were presented with their certificates at a special event hosted by Hope Street Hotel in Liverpool.
Between them the new team of International Visitor Hosts are able to greet and guide overseas visitors in French, Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, Slovakian, Czech, Finnish, Mandarin, Cantonese, Japanese and Thai.
They will operate on a self-employed basis and also have the opportunity to work with the two official Tour Guide Booking Agencies – Liverpool Tour Guide Service (Hilary Oxlade/Paul Beesley) and Pool of Life Tours (Tim Hemmings), who have fully supported the programme and will be mentoring the individuals in the months ahead.
Work undertaken by the International Visitor Hosts may include meeting and greeting at airports and stations, transfers to hotels and airports, as well as full guided tours for conference delegates, cruise liner passengers, travel trade and travel media, visiting European football teams, and corporate visits for businesses hosting overseas visitors.
The cosmopolitan group ranges from students to the early retired and includes those working in a variety of professions from teaching, translating, hospitality services, entertainment and writing.
Pam Wilsher, TMP’s Head of Visitor Economy Development, explained: “We were delighted with the initial interest in the programme to find and train our new International Visitor Hosts, but the calibre and enthusiasm of the trainees we eventually recruited has really impressed us.
“Liverpool has just been confirmed once again as the 6th most visited city in the UK by international visitors and it is important that we offer our increasing number of overseas visitors a really warm welcome in their own language. Our new recruits join our existing team of Blue, Green and other Tourist Board accredited guides who do such a great job in meeting and greeting our visitors.”
This is the second cohort of guides to complete their training this month. The Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA) have recently completed a training programme for volunteer guides who will conduct a programme of guided weekend Waterfront walks this summer. “The quality and diversity of this year’s finalists was very high – each of them has demonstrated a commitment to attracting more visitors to the Liverpool City Region and offering them an exceptional experience. Many local businesses are in fierce competition for the Awards but when we, the Tourist Board, work with them, we’re all on the same side – collaborating to promote Liverpool City Region. The winners of the Awards go on to represent the City Region at a national level and can help attract greater profile for the whole destination by being the best in their category.”
Dave Brewitt, Chief Executive of Hope Street Hotel (Winner: Hotel of the Year) and The London Carriage Works (Winner: Taste) said:
“We are, of course, delighted with this double win. As an independent company within a very competitive market full of quality hotels and restaurants, we work hard for our day-to-day success. We are very proud of our product and very proud of our teams and their loyal spirit and wit – all qualities we hope shine through the business.”
Emma Owen, Marketing and PR Manager for Aintree Racecourse (Winner: Tourism Event of the Year) commented:
“We are absolutely thrilled that the showcase event of Aintree’s racing calendar, the John Smith’s Grand National, has been named Tourism Event of the Year – in the same year it broke all previous records. This is testament to the quality of three-day race festival and the overall visitor experience, and is recognition of hard work of the entire team involved.”
Tom Cassidy, Commercial Tourism Manager at Liverpool Football Club (Winner: Large Visitor Attraction of the Year) said:
“We’ve taken a very different approach to the football club as a visitor attraction. We’ve done a lot of hard work and this is only the start. There’s a lot more we can do and you can never take things for granted as there are a lot of very good attractions in the region.”
Dick Mawdsley, Director at Utlity (Winner: Retailer of the Year) added:
“We’re lucky because Liverpool is blessed with lots of great buildings and heritage. We’ve managed to capitalise on that and play to our audience with fantastic Liverpool-orientated product ranges which are popular with all visitors – local, regional, national and international. ACC Liverpool announces company restructure
ACC Liverpool, home to BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena, has announced a company restructure to reflect the changing needs of its business.
Driven by the development of a £40m event and exhibition complex due for completion in 2014, the new management structure includes the replacement of the three current General Manager positions with two new posts which will report directly to the Chief Executive. In addition to the new Commercial Director and Operations Director roles, a new Project Director position has also been created to oversee the venue’s expansion plans.
Further to these changes ACC Liverpool has today (Wednesday 1 June) announced the appointment of Tim Banfield to the position of Commercial Director and Phil Pickett to the position of Project Director, Exhibition and Event Facilities. Prior to his new role, Tim Banfield was General Manager with Echo Arena and Phil Pickett was General Manager of Operations across the entire ACC Liverpool site. The new Operations Director role is yet to be filled and a period of external recruitment will now commence.
After five successful years as General Manager of BT Convention Centre Liverpool, Jacquie Rogers has decided to take this opportunity to pursue new professional opportunities outside of ACC Liverpool’s business.
Bob Prattey, Chief Executive ACC Liverpool said: “These are exciting times for ACC Liverpool and our organisational changes will aid the delivery of our customer based objectives inherent in our revised Strategic Business Plan.” On the news of Jacquie Rogers’ departure, he added: “I would like to thank Jacquie for her commitment to the company’s success since her appointment in 2006. She has been instrumental in helping to build the business into one of the most successful Convention Centres in the UK and has helped put Liverpool on the map for business tourism. Jacquie leaves behind an exceptionally strong team and she can look back on her time at ACC Liverpool with real pride, safe in the knowledge that the company’s future is in good hands. We wish Jacquie well for the future.”
Jacquie Rogers said, “I have had a great five years at ACC Liverpool and am extremely proud of my achievements and those of my team. It has been hugely gratifying to help drive Liverpool as a destination for business tourism, the results of which will continue to be seen in the years to come. The announcement of the restructure at ACC Liverpool has come at a time when I am ready to explore new professional opportunities within the industry.”
Secretary of State chooses ACC Liverpool to announce major green technology investment plans
The Government has underscored its commitment to the green economy with two major investments in renewable energy technology, which was announced at a press conference on 26th May at ACC Liverpool, recognised as one of Europe’s greenest meetings and events venues.
Business Secretary Vince Cable announced the start of a competition to form an Offshore Renewable Energy technology and innovation centre. The new centre will focus on technologies for offshore wind, wave and tidal power.
The landmark Liverpool venue was picked by the Department for Business Innovation and Skills for the announcement, due to its sustainability credentials which include, five 20 metre low-noise wind turbines, rainwater harvesting, zero waste to landfill and ISO 14001 accreditation.
ACC Liverpool, home to BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena, was built with efficiency and sustainability in mind and represents the only purpose-built interconnected arena and convention centre in the UK.
Further reinforcing the venue’s position as one of the UK’s most sustainable venues, the Renewable UK Association held its BWEA Offshore Wind annual conference and exhibition at ACC Liverpool in 2010, and will return in 2011 on 29th June for a two day event. The event will welcome approximately 2500 delegates and 200 exhibitors and this year requires a significant increase in exhibition space, reflecting the growing interest in the sustainable agenda.
Bob Prattey, CEO, ACC Liverpool said, “We are honoured to have been chosen as the venue for such an important announcement for the low carbon economy and it is fantastic recognition for us as a venue to see so many high profile people returning time and time again.”
ACC Liverpool receives a double win at the TMP Tourism Awards
TMP Tourism Awards commend visitor economy businesses
The Mersey Partnership (TMP) Tourism Awards 2011, which took place last night (Thursday 26th May), saw ACC Liverpool achieve the award for Sustainable Tourism and the BT Convention Centre – part of ACC Liverpool – win the award for Excellence in Business Tourism.
Organised by the official tourist board for the Liverpool City Region, the awards recognise the very best in quality and excellence in the city region’s visitor economy.
The latest honours come in a long list of awards bestowed upon ACC Liverpool over the last 12 months including Eventia’s Venue Event Team of the Year and Exhibition News’ Green Award.
Following this year’s earlier announcement of the development of a £40million exhibition and events complex, the two awards mark another major step in the city’s recognition of the effect that ACC Liverpool, home to Echo Arena and BT Convention Centre, is having on the events industry in the region.
Bob Prattey, CEO ACC Liverpool said, “We are delighted to win both awards which recognise ACC Liverpool as a leader for business tourism and sustainability for the city. The BT Convention Centre has welcomed some of the world’s most influential associations and governmental conferences recently and brought a significant economic impact to Liverpool. This has been a team effort and we are pleased that ACC Liverpool is helping drive notable business to the city”.
ACC Liverpool takes its plans for expansion to International IMEX
At IMEX 2011 the ACC Liverpool team will be sharing more details with
buyers in relation to the recently announced expansion plans for the
venue, which continues to enhance its reputation as a landmark
conference and events venue.
The development in Liverpool will include an 8,100m2 exhibition and
events complex which is scheduled to open in September 2014. The new development will ensure that ACC Liverpool stays ahead of the competitor set through its flexibility and world class product offering.
The venue is also developing its team as well as its facilities.
Joining the recently expanded sales team, new appointments in the shape
of a Business Development Manager and a Social Media Executive will help
ensure a continued drive aimed at informing customers of the
opportunities for events of all kinds to develop and flourish in this
most exciting of cities.
Developing Liverpool’s connectivity to Europe’s transport infrastructure
will be a major theme at IMEX. Initiatives including the partnership
with Virgin trains to provide a seamless rail booking service for
delegates can be attributed to ACC Liverpool’s success along with the
expanding reach of Liverpool John Lennon airport to over 70 UK and
European destinations. KLM operates four daily flights between
Liverpool and their main International hub, Schiphol, Amsterdam, which
offers connections from over 650 worldwide destinations.
Thousands of delegates are now arriving in the city every week
representing a wide spectrum of market sectors. The city’s current
hotel bedstock continues to grow with new additions to the 5,000 rooms
already available in the city centre.
On Tuesday 24th May at 2pm, the team from ACC Liverpool, who will be
exhibiting on the Visit England Stand F360, will be presenting its plans
for the new Exhibition and Events Complex as well as giving an update on its latest connectivity initiatives and hotel expansion plans in the
city.
Royal College of Nursing signs up to return to ACC Liverpool in 2013
Following a successful event at ACC Liverpool in April this year, the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) has announced it will return to the Liverpool waterfront venue, home to BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena, in 2013.
The Royal College of Nursing event saw 6,000 delegates arrive in the city for four days. Utilising both the BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena, the venue provided a unique combination of facilities for the 2011 congress and will do so again for the 2013 event. The RCN annual congress attracts nurses from across the UK and is aimed at promoting excellence in nursing practice and shaping health policies through debate.
Head of Sales at BT Convention Centre Liverpool, Kerrin MacPhie, said, “I am delighted that RCN has committed to bringing its event back to Liverpool in 2013. ACC Liverpool has established an un-rivalled reputation across the medical sector due to our understanding of the demands of these types of events. This decision is a reflection of the commitment that we have to surpass expectations and really drive Liverpool forward as one of the UK’s pre-eminent destinations for meetings, events and exhibitions.”
Brian French, Conference and Events Manager for RCN Events commented, “This was my 31st RCN Congress and I have never felt so supported by a venue in all that time. From the sales manager through to the events team, catering and front of house staff, ACC Liverpool has created a winning formula that we cannot wait to see in action again in 2013. We have a significant number of RCN members in the region and bringing the Congress to Liverpool has brought us a whole new audience.”
Surgeons sign for ACC Liverpool until 2020
The Association of Surgeons of Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI) has committed to holding its annual International Surgical Congress at ACC Liverpool, home to BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena, on a 3-year rotating contract until 2020. Following ASGBI’s successful 90th anniversary Congress in 2010 at the venue, the Association has confirmed it will return to Liverpool in 2012, 2016 and 2020, the Association’s 100th anniversary.
The flexibility of ACC Liverpool inspired ASGBI to commit to a three-year deal and the venues capacity to host large delegate numbers was an important factor for ASGBI when shortlisting potential venues. With delegate numbers growing consistently each year, the venue had to be within a city that could also accommodate and entertain the Association’s membership.
The ASGBI International Congress currently attracts around 2000 delegates of which 25% attend from over seas, all keen to share best practice and engage in discussions of new developments within their field.
ACC Liverpool has worked closely with Liverpool Convention Bureau to bring the ASGBI Congress, which has an estimated £1.7m economic impact on the local economy, to Liverpool.
Professor Nicholas Gair, Chief Executive of ASGBI said, “ACC Liverpool was one of the few venues to be considered which could, from the outset, accommodate the projected increase of delegate numbers for each year up to 2020. I am confident that each of the Association’s International Surgical Congresses in Liverpool will be individually memorable due to the variety and flexibility both the venue and City can offer. The strong links the venue has with Liverpool Convention Bureau and the tourist board have made it easy to manage our events via one contact. We wanted to be in a venue that breathes with us and, with the recent news of the exhibition and events complex, it shows just how adaptable and accommodating ACC Liverpool will be by 2020.”
Bob Prattey, Chief Executive ACC Liverpool said, “The collective factors that have resulted in ASGBI’s decision to commit to three years at ACC Liverpool proves our partnership with the Bureau is a winning formula. ACC Liverpool has an exacting record of hosting medical conferences, with facilities suited for large conference groups, as well as destination support in terms of tailored social programmes, further confirming the city’s appeal to this sector.”
Scientific expertise helps Liverpool secure the world’s largest conference of cancer surgeons in 2014
One of Liverpool’s ambassadors, consultant liver surgeon, Mr Graeme Poston from University Hospital Aintree, alongside Liverpool Convention Bureau and ACC Liverpool, has helped to secure the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) conference, to be held from 14th – 16th September 2014.
ESSO represents more than 2,000 cancer surgeons from across Europe and the Middle East and with the conference estimated to bring in between 600-800 delegates to the ACC Liverpool, it is also expected to generate around £1.4 million in economic benefit for the city. The ESSO conference is the largest gathering of cancer surgeons in the world. A special Lord Mayor’s reception will be held for delegates travelling to Liverpool.
Carol O’Reilly, Liverpool Convention Bureau Manager comments; “This win is a great coup for the city and a reward for our collaborative efforts in securing the event. We faced competition from capital cities including Athens, Geneva and Berlin, so quite rightly we are extremely proud to have secured such a high profile conference, which underlines our international reach and expert knowledge.”
Mr Poston, who has also been appointed as President-elect of the European Society of Surgical Oncology (ESSO) continues; “A lot of hard work goes into these bids. Clinicians work very closely with venue management teams and Liverpool Convention Bureau to present the best possible bids for bringing major conferences to the city. It is very competitive, but Liverpool’s worldwide recognition through music and football gives us an advantage. We are building on that by demonstrating that we can successfully host major events.”
Jacquie Rogers, General Manager of BT Convention Centre, part of ACC Liverpool added; “It is great to see the city being backed by members of the medical profession and with this kind of support and endorsement, ACC Liverpool is being recognised as a skilled and adaptable venue to host major association events of this nature. We look forward to welcoming ESSO in 2014.”
Securing the ESSO conference is the latest in a series of major clinical events to be secured by bids from clinicians across the city, with the support of the convention bureau and venues. These include the Association of Upper Gastrointestinal Surgeons Great Britain and Ireland (AUGIS) in 2008, the Association of Surgeons Great Britain and Ireland (ASGBI) and the British Society of Gastroenterology (BSG) in 2010, while 2012 will see the city play host to the UK Digestive Disorders Federation (DDF) which includes AUGIS and BSG.
Mr Poston, who recently won a lifetime achievement award for excellence in cancer surgery, added: “Success breeds success and the more times the city hosts clinical conferences, the more we can convince leading clinicians from across the world that they are coming to the right place to share best practise and help to improve the quality of care for all of our patients.”
New Business Development Manager for BT Convention Centre Liverpool
The sales team at the BT Convention Centre, part of ACC Liverpool, has been further strengthened with the addition of Arwen Bate in the newly created role of Business Development Manager. Bate’s appointment follows the recent announcement of Fiona Brown and Sandra Eyre to the association team. As Business Development Manager, Bate will be responsible for developing new, forward-thinking initiatives that complement the existing sales teams’ focus on corporate, regional and international sales.
Bate joins from the Northwest Development Agency where she promoted Liverpool and the Northwest region as a business destination to attract foreign-owned companies to set up or expand business operations.
As part of her new role, Bate will analyse any fluctuation in the meetings market and ensure BT Convention Centre Liverpool is responding to the changing needs of clients and staying ahead of the competition. Her knowledge of industry sectors for business investment will help the venue deliver targeted initiatives to bring in new business. Having worked in the local area and also with clients across the globe, Bate will be developing BT Convention Centre Liverpool’s international business strategy.
Kerrin MacPhie, Head of Sales at BT Convention Centre Liverpool, said: “I am delighted to welcome Arwen on board at such an exciting time in the company’s development. We have introduced this new Business Development role to the team to explore new possibilities and re-visit our existing proposition using a fresh perspective. Arwen comes armed with a wealth of destination knowledge and a great understanding of the key benefits of the Liverpool City region and will be instrumental in driving new business for the exhibition and events complex which will be added to ACC Liverpool’s portfolio of world-class venues in 2014.”
Echo Arena Liverpool brings in ‘firsts’ for world-class sporting events
British Gymnastics and Judo come to Liverpool for the first time
The second half of 2011 will see great British sports make their first appearance at one of the North West’s largest indoor sporting arenas, Echo Arena Liverpool.
The most prestigious event on the British Gymnastics calendar, 2011 Women’s Artistic British Championships, heads to Liverpool for the first time on Saturday 9th – Sunday 10th July 2011. The championship will see the country’s top female gymnasts in action, with Liverpool’s 3-time world champion, Beth Tweddle MBE, and club team-mate and 2010 British Champion Hannah Whelan as the star attractions.
The Echo Arena will seat over 6,000 fans ensuring great support for the gymnasts competing in a world-class competition environment.
The Echo will then go on to host the British Judo Association’s 2011 GB World Cup for Men taking place on Sunday 1st – Sunday 2nd October 2011.
It is the first time that the event, which is staged with support from UK Sport’s Lottery funded World Class Events Programme, will have been held in Liverpool. Liverpool’s competition has been predicted to attract some of the world’s best judo competitors on their campaign to reach London 2012.
John Moore, Sport Manager at Echo Arena Liverpool said, “It is a fantastic coup to see Olympic qualifying events such as British Judo being staged at Echo Arena Liverpool. These, coupled with other major sporting events we have already welcomed, including the Davis Cup Tennis and Great British Basketball, confirm the diversity and venue flexibility that we can offer.”
A ‘Heads’ up on Liverpool’s latest win
Liverpool secures 2014 European Conference on Head & Neck Oncology
Liverpool has enhanced its position as one of Europe’s most sought after conference cities by securing the 6th European Conference on Head & Neck Oncology (ECHNO) in 2014.
Running from 23rd – 25th April at BT Convention Centre, part of ACC Liverpool, the conference will combine two meetings between the European Head & Neck Society (EHNS) and the British Association of Head and Neck Oncology (BAHNO) offering specialist courses and expert lecturers from the world of oncology. The event is expected to attract around 800 delegates to the city with a projected economic benefit of £1.1 million.
Carol O’Reilly, Liverpool Convention Bureau Manager comments; “Liverpool’s knowledge economy is one of our greatest assets and this is achieving cut through in the association sector, which is one of the key reasons as to why we are winning these kinds of events. With so many experts coming to visit and experience Liverpool, this can only be a good thing. Moreover, it will lead to further establishing the city as a base of expert knowledge, which event organisers looking for expertise in medical or scientific fields can tap into for future events.”
James Brown, Consultant Maxillofacial Surgeon, Aintree University Hospital, comments;
“I am delighted that this joint meeting of the European Head and Neck Society and the British Association of Head and Neck Oncology will be coming to Liverpool in 2014. ACC Liverpool to host Global Entrepreneurship Congress in 2012
ACC Liverpool, home to BT Convention Centre Liverpool is to host the Global Entrepreneurship Congress which brings together thought leaders, economists and entrepreneurs from over 100 countries.
The event takes place in March 2012 and will see delegates from across the world congregate at the iconic waterside convention centre and at various fringe events across the city. Liverpool follows in the footsteps of previous hosts Kansas City, Dubai and Shanghai and will be the first European city to host the symposium.
The event will be run by US-based Kauffman Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation working to understand and advance entrepreneurship, education and training efforts.
The bid for the congress was lead by Liverpool Vision, the city’s economic development company and saw Liverpool beat off stiff competition from UAE, Chile and Denmark who were all shortlisted.
Carl Schramm, president and CEO of the Kauffman Foundation, said: “The power of the message put forward by Liverpool Vision about Liverpool’s interest—and the many expansions of entrepreneurship that were pointed out in the application that characterised modern Liverpool as a city truly committed to entrepreneurship—were very decisive.”
Bob Prattey, Chief Executive, ACC Liverpool said: “The fact that our destination partners are proactively bidding for events and congresses of this nature is a real vote of confidence for partnership working in the city. We are delighted that Liverpool Vision’s bid for the congress was successful and we look forward to welcoming the delegates in 2012”.
Max Steinberg, chief executive of Liverpool Vision, who led the bid team, said: “The significance of this for Liverpool cannot be underestimated and the effects of the Global Entrepreneurship Congress selection committee choosing our city will ripple for many years to come. We want to create the conditions in which innovators and entrepreneurs can thrive and that has never been more important than now”.
ACC Liverpool to build new exhibition and events complex
Liverpool’s landmark Arena and Convention Centre is to benefit from the addition of a new 8,100m² exhibition and events complex open for business in September 2014. Costing £40m, the new venue will consist of 8,100m2 of space which will be sub-dividable into three interlinked pillar-free exhibition halls, each 2,700m² in size. .
The development; with its progressive technology, production equipment and individually adjustable ceiling heights, will ensure that Liverpool continues to increase its momentum as one of Europe’s leading destinations for large-scale conferences, standing concerts, sporting events and exhibitions.
The extension to the existing ACC Liverpool (comprising Echo Arena and BT Convention Centre) will also see the development of an on-site upscale 200-bedroom hotel. The new facilities will be connected with a sky bridge directly in to ACC Liverpool making it the only interconnected arena, convention centre and exhibition facility in Europe.
The construction of the new hotel will increase the city’s bedstock to over 6,000 rooms and will encourage even larger events to head to Liverpool, as organisers, production companies and sports right holders realise the collective scope of the North West’s premier hub for live events.
The approval of the exhibition and events complex was announced by the leader of Liverpool City Council, Joe Anderson, and follows a feasibility study into the development of the site adjacent to ACC Liverpool.
Leader of the City Council, Joe Anderson said, “This is great news for the city and a huge statement of confidence in Liverpool. A new state-of-the-art exhibition hall will enhance the excellent waterfront facilities of the Echo Arena and BT Convention Centre, making Liverpool a top UK venue for exhibitions, events and conferences.”
David McDonnell, chairman of ACC Liverpool, added, “The feasibility work we have undertaken demonstrates that this development will be self-funding and will begin to attract millions of pounds of new business to the city as soon as it opens.”
Bob Prattey, chief executive of ACC Liverpool, said, “We have already proved that Liverpool is an attractive and compelling destination for conference and exhibition organisers. The new venue will enable us to build market share and to attract even larger and more lucrative events, helping to fill the city’s hotels, restaurants and shops with high-spending visitors.”
The new venue is set to be built by a partnership of Liverpool City Council and ACC Liverpool and managed by the existing ACC Liverpool management team.
Recognised for its uncompromising green credentials and a location ideal for high security events, ACC Liverpool is also acknowledged for its people and the welcome they afford international delegates. In the three years since opening, the venue has secured high profile events from the MOBO Awards to TUC and Labour Party’s Annual Conference 2011 which will draw over 10,000 people to the city.
ACC Liverpool sets the tempo for a weekend of music
ACC Liverpool was alive with the sound of music at the weekend as over 20,000 visitors descended upon the venue to see global talent mix with the stars of tomorrow.
Comprising BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena, ACC Liverpool became a pulse of musical genres ranging from rousing classics and UK number ones to Grammy Award winning songs.
Friday night saw Beiber Fever strike the city as the Canadian megastar Justin Beiber performed to a sell-out crowd of 11,000 at the Echo Arena.
Meanwhile, in the adjoining BT Convention Centre, preparations for the next set of X-Factor hopefuls were well under way with the final logistics put in place for a full day of televised auditions on Saturday. Well versed in hosting some of the highest profile corporate and association events, BT Convention Centre played host to the first ever X-Factor auditions in Liverpool while Dermot O’Leary whipped the crowd into a frenzy in front of the TV cameras.
Saturday evening saw the musical tempo in the adjacent Echo Arena once again change beat. A classical spectacular complete with canons, muskets and lasers put the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra (RLPO) through its paces and swelled the audience with pride at Pomp and Circumstance and the 1812 Overture.
Chief Executive, ACC Liverpool, Bob Prattey, said, “We have had a fantastic weekend of musical talent; from the global talent of Justin Beiber to X-Factor auditionees. The flexibility of our venue makes it possible to have the full might of the RLPO playing to a packed audience in the Echo Arena, while thousands of hopefuls converged on the adjacent BT Convention Centre for a chance of pop stardom. In more ways than one, Liverpool emerged with the X Factor this weekend.”
The musical weekend concluded on Sunday evening with ‘Live the Dream’ kids variety show whilst this week Echo Arena prepares to welcome The Script on Monday evening, The Australian Pink Floyd on Tuesday and Westlife on Friday.
It’s then back to business for BT Convention Centre, as the venue welcomes the Federation of Small Business for their annual conference starting this Wednesday – a truly eclectic week for ACC Liverpool!
Echo Arena Liverpool gives its smaller events space a new identity with the launch of EchoTwo
Echo Arena Liverpool is giving one of its most popular event layouts a new identity as it launches the newly branded EchoTwo.
The venue-within-a-venue has a capacity of up to 4000 and will appeal to artists and promoters looking for a more intimate performance space.
Situated at the D-End of the Echo Arena, EchoTwo will offer visitors the chance to get up close and personal with top music, comedy and classical acts, with the remainder of the venue sectioned off.
Echo Arena General Manager Tim Banfield said: “The new space will be intimate, creating a superb atmosphere for acts that don’t want to play to a massive arena audience, enabling fans to feel like they are really close to the performers.
“Demand for this kind of space is growing all the time and the result is a direct response to industry feedback. This now means concert-goers don’t have to leave the city region to see some of their favourite acts.
“The new layout will also reduce costs and make it easier for production companies to load in their equipment.
“For some performers, the city’s other long-standing venues are simply too small, while the entire Echo Arena is too big. This fills the middle ground and creates a whole new type of venue where fans are closer to the stage.
“Branding will also follow suit with the EchoTwo logo so people know to expect a different type of experience.”
Talent already confirmed for the space includes comedian Paddy McGuinness, The Australian Pink Floyd Show, Carnival Du Vampires Rock and The Monkees which will be performing on 12th May 2011.
Echo Arena Liverpool, part of the award winning ACC Liverpool, is interlinked to the adjoining BT Convention Centre. 2010 was a successful year for Echo Arena Liverpool which hosted the live televised MOBO awards and Channel 4 reality show Famous and Fearless.

The second Conference Ambassador Networking Group is to be held at Liverpool’s Novotel Hotel on 24th March.

Titled ‘Ambassadors in the city: Making ambassador programmes work for your next event’ the seminar will take place in the Organising and Logistics theatre on 1st March at 10.15am. Liverpool Convention Bureau Manager Carol O’Reilly will be joined by Conference Researcher for Liverpool, Hazel Kennedy and one of their ambassadors Sally Woods, who played a part in bringing the International Harm Reduction Conference to the city in 2010.
ACC Liverpool announced as new home to BBC Showcase UK
ACC Liverpool, home to BT Convention Centre and Echo Arena, is to host 2012’s prestigious BBC Showcase UK.
BBC Showcase, BBC Worldwide’s annual television programme export event, is a noted fixture in the television buying calendar and generates up to £50million of programme exports each year. The 4-day event will bring together over 500 of the world’s biggest network buyers and give them an opportunity to purchase the latest BBC Worldwide content.

The event is now in its 35th year and has been held in Brighton for much of this time. The selection of ACC Liverpool as the events’ new home was focused around the versatility and scale of the venue as well as the experience of the events team and the strength of the destination offer for delegates.
BBC Worldwide will build upon the hi-end technical infrastructure on offer at ACC Liverpool, by creating a unique event environment, which will give delegates individual digitised viewing booths enabling them to view over 1000 hours of new content. The day and night schedules are also packed with producer pitches, co -production forums, screenings and stylish launch parties.
During the showcase many on and off screen talent attend to help pitch to international buyers. Famous faces at past BBC Showcases have included Sir David Attenborough, Imelda Staunton, Bill Nighy, Timothy Spall, Buzz Aldrin, Russell T Davies, Steven Moffat, Martin Freeman, Louis Theroux, Matt Smith, Michael Palin, Judy Parfitt, Sanjeev Bhaskar, Michael Aspel, Richard Armitage Keeley Hawes, Katy Brand, Philip Glenister, Sharon Small, Orla Brady and Mark Gatiss.
Bob Prattey, CEO, ACC Liverpool said, “We are delighted to have been chosen as the new home of BBC Showcase UK and are proud to be hosting this prestigious media event in 2012 and beyond. This is a very high profile date in the television industry calendar and will give us a great opportunity to showcase our world class venue and unique city on an international stage. We are looking forward to working closely with the team at BBC Worldwide in the coming months and years, to further develop this fantastic event here in Liverpool.
“Both 2011 and 2012 are proving to be very buoyant for ACC Liverpool, as we see an increasing number of prominent corporate organisations looking to ACC Liverpool to host their events and we are proud to be able to add BBC Worldwide to that list”.
Announcing the move, BBC Worldwide Sales & Distribution MD, Steve Macallister, said, “The move to ACC Liverpool responds to a real step change in our business. Our distribution activity has expanded significantly in recent years, for example into new areas such as digital. BBC Showcase needs to evolve and grow alongside this, and ACC Liverpool opens up exciting new possibilities for this next stage of its life.”
Liverpool launches Small Meetings Package
Liverpool Convention Bureau has joined forces with 27 participating venues to create a Liverpool Small Meetings Package offering a tiered scheme of day delegate rates across the City Region starting from as little as £17.50. The initiative was part of a bid to remind buyers that Liverpool can accommodate small meetings, as well as large congresses, and to offer added value to those booking events for smaller numbers.
The packages also include unique added value incentives such as a team building crafts session at arts venue the Bluecoat, a cocktail demonstration and tasting at Malmaison Liverpool, a stadium tour at Liverpool Football Club and complimentary entry into the Beatles Story visitor attraction courtesy of Premier Inn Liverpool Albert Dock.
“Liverpool has established itself as a large congress destination thanks to events such as the Labour party conference, the Royal College of Nursing and the forthcoming Liverpool Boat Show, but we want to get the message out that we can also accommodate smaller gatherings. Many large events also incorporate smaller fringe meetings and we see the Small Meetings Package as our way of shouting about the wealth of options that we have;” comments Carol O’Reilly, Liverpool Convention Bureau Manager.
“We’ve cut out all the legwork to bring all of the packages together in addition to including some added value options that only Liverpool can offer to make it as easy as possible for the buyer. Hopefully the initiative will be well received by the meetings community.”
Further details on the Liverpool Small Meetings Package and DDR’s can be found on Liverpool’s website at www.liverpoolconventionbureau.com or by calling 0151 237 3964.

ACC Liverpool will be representing the city at ASAE, engaging with American buyers stateside for the first time and marking the start of a sales initiative focusing on the North American market.

Kerrin MacPhie, Head of Sales for BT Convention Centre will be heading Liverpool’s charge on the USA market and highlighting the attraction of the city as an international conference destination.
Liverpool was awarded European Capital of Culture in 2008 and since then has made a name for itself through awards and high profile events taking place in the city. Subsequently it has resulted in the city being voted as the 2nd best UK city event organisers would choose to host an event outside of London and a place in style savvy travellers’ guide, Condé Nast Traveller.
Built as a green venue, ACC Liverpool is continually improving its sustainable offering and setting the standards for other convention centres to follow. Kerrin will also be sharing her experiences of developing the Global Green Alliance (GGA), an affiliation of likeminded partner convention and exhibition destinations over three continents.
MacPhie commented, “We have, within the last 6 months, had an increased interest from the USA and I am very keen to take Liverpool’s offering to Los Angeles to show the rest of the USA what the north west of England can offer as a conference destination. Within two years of opening, ACC Liverpool has already hosted many international events including some from the USA and I look forward to meeting with more potential buyers who will come over and see Liverpool and all it has to offer.”
ACC Liverpool which hosted this year’s AIPC annual congress welcomed 180 members from 53 countries, of which three convention centres from the USA attended. Attendees, who were predominantly senior level convention centre management, had the opportunity to see Liverpool’s offering for conference delegates and learn best practises from the host convention centre.
ACC Liverpool will be exhibiting on Visit Britain’s stand 1530a.
Liverpool business visitors to help make the city greener
Conference organisers hosting events in Liverpool will be able to compensate for their carbon impact by donating to a range of green projects across the city.
Foundation, a climate fund for the North West, has joined forces with the Liverpool Convention Bureau (LCB) in the city’s first ever partnership to offer organisers the chance to contribute towards local carbon-reduction projects.
Foundation Chief Officer, Mark Turner, explained: “Carbon emissions are unavoidable when it comes to organising and hosting large events such as conferences and we hope that this new scheme will give people the chance to compensate for the environmental impact of their events.
“The way it works is simple: Organisers using the bureau to make their bookings, who are interested in compensating for their carbon, will be asked to contribute £100 for a meeting with up to 100 delegates, ranging through to £1,000 for a big event with more than 800 guests.
“All the money will then be used to fund community projects in the Liverpool city region, such as fitting solar panels and energy efficient boilers in local halls and schools and creating new woodlands,” he added.
Carol O’Reilly, Liverpool Convention Bureau Manager, commented: “We want everyone to recognise Liverpool as an exemplary destination and green credentials are a large part of our appeal.
“The carbon compensation scheme we have launched with Foundation is a real first and something that we feel event organisers will appreciate. Whilst carbon offsetting is not a new concept, carbon compensating is a fresh way of responding and is evolving into a perfect way to encourage low carbon behaviours. Through the Convention Bureau scheme event organisers and individual delegates can work out their own footprint and contribute to local community projects – it’s a great idea.”
Since its launch in April 2009, Foundation has awarded over £140,000 to eight projects across Merseyside and is on target to save 1668 tonnes of Co2 which is the equivalent of heating over 470 homes or powering the Mersey ferries for a year.
