EIBTM Technology Watch –Opens for Submissions

EIBTM Technology Watch –Opens for Submissions

The continuing impact of new technology on the meetings industry is significant and the EIBTM Technology Watch Award is now the most high profile and longest running recognition scheme for innovation in the sector worldwide.  Considered to be the “Meetings Industry Tech Oscars” it will celebrate its 13th anniversary this year.

Free to enter, the application process for submissions is now open at www.eibtm.com/techwatch.   The award winner will receive an exhibition stand within the Technology Village at EIBTM (value €3000) to showcase their product to over 15,200 industry professionals expected to attend this year’s event.

Chaired by Corbin Ball (recently named one of the 25 most influential people in the meetings industry) the expert judging panel will be looking for companies to demonstrate new and innovative technology solutions that can make a significant difference to the industry.

With the winner being chosen before EIBTM, the prize also includes a global publicity and marketing campaign pre-show as well as high visibility on site with:

  • Inclusion in a monthly e-newsletter to over 28,000 industry professionals
  • Announcement in the weekly EIBTM news alert which is issued to over 15,000 industry professionals in the  run up to the show
  • Profile on the EIBTM website which receives over 1.3 million page views per year
  • Exposure to the world’s industry media
  • Inclusion in the official EIBTM catalogue (printed and online)
  • Award presentation at the show
  • Article in the official Show Daily at EIBTM distributed to all attendees

In 2011, the award went to US based ITN International.  ”The leads we generated and the contacts we made were extraordinary,” said Mike Sorgani, Vice President, Sales and Marketing of the full-service registration and lead management company.

“I will give you just one example.  Eleven days after EIBTM, we found ourselves in front of the producer of the world’s largest corporate event, describing how our technology could add excitement.  The invitation to visit the producer’s offices and make a presentation stemmed directly from our award and the prize for us to exhibit at EIBTM.  This particular opportunity is huge-and we owe it to EIBTM.” He added.

The Technology Village is a specialist exhibiting area of EIBTM where technology suppliers have the opportunity to showcase their products and services.  To enquire about booking a stand or for further information please visit www.eibtm.com/tech or contact david.benitez@reedexpo.co.uk

Air Charter Travel demonstrates the benefits of private charter to EIBTM delegates for 17th consecutive year.

Air Charter Travel, the UK-headquartered leading air charter broker was integral in supporting this year’s EIBTM, the Global Meetings and Events exhibition, held in Barcelona 29 November to 1st December. On Wednesday 30th November, early morning saw a group of over 125 senior MICE buyers check in at London Gatwick and head to Barcelona aboard a Thomas Cook Boeing 757. With the UK national strike anticipated to cause chaos the value of a privately chartered flight was confirmed as buyers were flown without a glitch to the annual conference.

Tim Procter, MD of Air Charter Travel said, “By planning an early flight, and working with our contacts at London Gatwick we knew we were able to fly to schedule. The charter flight is essential for the success of EIBTM, as those flying on the charter are incredibly influential in the business. It was great to have the opportunity to fly them to this essential industry conference and successfully get them there. This is the 17th year we’ve worked with Reed Exhibitions to deliver buyers to the show and we understand just how important it is for the exhibition.”

The hosted buyers enjoy the unique benefits that flying by private charter provides. Dedicated check-in desks with the EIBTM logo above them sped up the departure process. On the branded aircraft the passengers were treated to a more traditional schedule service with complimentary bucks fizz and a full English breakfast. This was a highlight for many and kept them going until well into the afternoon. A show brochure on each seat enabled buyers to plan their time. “For buyers the charter flight is a real bonus as it means we can make the most of our time at the show, meet with other hosted buyers to talk industry trends and know that our flight was pretty much going to travel as planned,” said Bob Jones MD of event management group BJ Events. “The flight also perfectly demonstrates to buyers the benefits of private charter for large groups, it can save time, money and supports a business’ objective to maximise the hours their employees are way from the office,” continued Jones.

Air Charter provides a range of charter services from executive jets & helicopters, to large corporate groups flying for special events. The company also supports cargo transport and showed growth of 13% last year. In its 20th year Air Charter Travel Ltd has handled over 140 flights carrying a total of more than 23,000 passengers around Europe and further afield to South America and China. Reed Travel Exhibitions (RTE) has announced the growth of their strategic partnership with Site, the global association for the motivational events and incentive travel industry. Extending their long-standing relationship, Site will help build on the award winning AIBTM and Americas Meetings Week, and further develop its relationship across the IBTM portfolio including new programs at EIBTM and CIBTM.

Under the expanded agreement, Site will serve as a Group Co-ordinator for AIBTM (www.aibtm.com). This will be the only trade event in the US to benefit from Site serving in a Group Co-ordinator role. Site will seek to elevate the conversation with and provide education for up to 100 Hosted Buyers commencing with the 2012 show (June 19-21). The Hosted Buyer Group will be in Baltimore and at AIBTM for the duration of the event and attend receptions, special seminars and a full diary of pre-scheduled appointments with exhibitors.

Continuing with its investment in the next generation of industry professionals, Site will develop the 2012 Site Young Leader Program to capitalize on a co-location of Site Academy events with both AIBTM and EIBTM, starting off with a Young Leaders education seminar taking place alongside the current EIBTM (www.eibtm.com). The future program will be developed exclusively with AIBTM and EIBTM and is intended to not only offer networking and education on two continents, but to leverage the opportunity to attract conversations with industry leaders, politicians and advocates from like-minded organizations. The event with AIBTM will take advantage of the proximity to Washington DC and provide Site’s Young Leaders an experience that expands their views on advocacy for their profession.

In 2012, Site is also co-locating its annual conference with CIBTM (www.cibtm.com) in Beijing, which will take place from 12-14 September. The Site International Conference (Beijing2012.siteglobal.com) will seek to welcome 500 delegates from 40 plus countries and will serve as an opportunity for incentive planners in China and Asia to attend a Site global conference in their region of the world.

“The Site International Board of Directors is focused on the fact that the conversations we have today will have an impact on our business of tomorrow. We are very excited about the expansion of our partnership with RTE because we believe the conversations that will be had through the education and networking opportunities will be of great value for Site members and our colleagues in the industry,” says Allison Summers, Managing Director for Site.

“We have always valued the contribution Site has made to our global portfolio of events through the education programs and now look forward to extending this relationship to bring the incentive industry closer to our events. Hosting top level executives personally selected by Site for AIBTM as well as the other expanded programs will, we believe, deliver tangible business opportunities to our exhibitors.” Said Craig Moyes, Group Exhibitions Director for the global portfolio of meeting events Reed Travel exhibitions.

GLOBAL CEO’S GATHER AT EIBTM TO DISCUSS CURRENT ECONOMIC IMPACT ON THE INDUSTRY, HOW TO PLAN FOR A CRISIS AND THE GROWTH IN GLOBAL CONNECTIVITY THROUGH MOBILE TECHNOLOGY

Reviewing the trends and subjects that affect businesses now and in the future, through live debate with a global perspective, the 6th EIBTM CEO Summit took place during EIBTM in Barcelona (www.eibtm.com).

Celebrating global thinking and international insight, the largest number of CEO’s from 20 countries, with guests from China, USA, UAE, Singapore, Canada, India, South America and 12 countries across Europe, gathered to discuss the key theme of “the power of global connectivity”.

“Whilst we can’t influence the current external factors directly, what we can influence is how we manage our business, our strategies and our own respective tactics in the context of this economic environment” said Jeremy Garbett, as he opened this year’s Summit with the umbrella theme of global connectivity and the impact it has on companies and individuals in the meetings and event’s industry.

Professor Dominic Sword, Strategy Consultant and an Independent Financial Economist opened the Summit and suggested that the business world is currently turned upside down. He delivered a substantial economic review with particular reference to BRICS and the new “11” which surround the BRICS. He said that these new destinations will affect the meetings industry as shifts in changing business travel and destinations emerge where new economies are growing. He said, one of the significant changes for the business tourism industry is, “staring us in the face” where a changing global landscape will even see the 10 largest airports in the world by 2030 located in the Asia Pacific region – Heathrow currently the “busiest” is expected to be ranked 4th”.

Swords outlined his “Top 5 actions” to be considered by CEO’s to face the current situation and the future. He asked a critical question “How do you create on-going value in a low growth world?” The answer is …“Review growth plans and priorities, don’t acquire unless thorough due diligence has been carried out, increase contact with existing customers, generate different conversations, scrutinize credit efficiency, keep a fierce grip on overheads and cash flow and address the future (new markets, technology, innovation… and get an app!)”.

When asked what should the industry focus on for their businesses? Professor Swords said “Look at the group of customers you have on your books and discuss with them how you can create value, and also look at who are the most profitable industries – focus on them as prospects”.

Alan Stevens, one of the top 10 media experts in Europe, chose to talk about crisis management and how to manage through both traditional and social media. His role was to get the CEO’s to think about how to handle an unexpected event.

Stevens sums up his advice in the acronym PACE – Preparation, Alertness, Communication and Evaluation, “ You need procedures, training, and you need to have practiced. The first time it happens and your plan is put into action it has to work. Alertness – you need to be monitoring the media, particularly social as it alerts you to a crisis sometimes before it occurs. Communication – decide who will be the spokesperson and should the CEO communicate or not and whoever speaks, it has to be honest, brief, and useful. Finally, evaluate to see how you performed and how the media responded”.

For speed and absolute preparedness Stevens went further and suggested that clients “should have in waiting ‘dark’ press releases and a ‘dark’ website pages with possible generic responses mapped out that only then need to be lightly edited in the light of a major issue.”

Paul Cook, new to the CEO Summit and heading up Clarity Events said, “people should think of the worst that can happen and plan for it rather than bury your head in the sand. We all have to face up to the current situation, properly and diligently gauge the risks, and then to plan properly for various disaster scenarios ”.

Ewan MacLeod, Social Media Expert and Founder of Mobile Industry Review, commented that the size and scale of the present and very active mobile revolution will demand a drastic and innovative response from the meetings industry and business tourism world. He commented “Mobile is where we are going in running not only our personal lives but also our business lives.”

He added “There is vastly more information now being ‘pushed’ towards us and we need as CEO’s to be clever in not only managing this volume but cherry picking quickly and effortlessly the critical information within it. The answer is to use the new technology and apps cleverly to help control and manage the flow. We need to embrace the technology…or it will sink you.”

“Today on average it takes approximately one month to research, decide and purchase via a PC. That whole process is reduced right down to one hour when using a mobile.”

In his closing remarks Garbett commented, “This year’s CEO Summit has provided a relevant, punchy and dynamic insight into our theme of global connectivity. We have had three fascinating and inter-related topics which the audience explored with terrific debates and lively Q & A sessions.” He added “This is the second year of the new evolved CEO EIBTM Summit and I am delighted to report that it is rapidly propelling itself to being of the ‘must attend’ forums for CEO’s in our industry. It truly provides a platform of relevant insight and informed debate that is particularly valuable for our invited guests”.

“Globally, this industry is responsible for 1.7 million jobs and $106 billion of GDP. Our role is to provide the platform and environment for the sector to meet and conduct business. Ultimately we believe we have achieved that and more and delivered value and profitable results for our customers” commented Graeme Barnett, EIBTM Event Director.

As the show closes today, early indications of just how successful this year’s event has been are recorded in the pre-audited figures. All trade show attendee numbers for Reed Travel Exhibitions (RTE) are subject to an independent ABC Audit to provide total transparency to all stakeholders.

Over 15,300 meetings industry professionals attended EIBTM over the three days including a total visitor and buyer attendance of 9,262 (last year’s audited numbers were 8,395), 10.3% up on 2010, of which 3,904 were Hosted Buyers (last year’s audited numbers were 3,963 ) delivering a 9% increase on Hosted Buyer attendance from 2010.

With more than 100 Professional education sessions – over 3,000 delegates attended seminars including those held in the Future Events Experience.

Eric Bakermans, Meetings & Conventions Marketing Manager, Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions summed up many exhibitor’s experiences of the business taking place on the show floor. “We have been sold out solid, which means that EIBTM offers excellent business opportunities for the Dutch Business Events industry.”

“We have always managed to close a lot of business at EIBTM, but this year it has been especially encouraging. To start with, it is very well organized and on top of that we have more than 80% of the appointments and had more contacts than last year. We have also closed group bookings of approximately 2000 persons in various groups for 2012” added Esteban Miso, Solways Group, Congress & Incentives Department.

Sara Elleni, General Manager Chile en Colores DMC spoke of the high level of quality contacts with decision and purchasing power that they met with during the show, “We always have high expectations of EIBTM and this year all our appointments have been with high quality contacts. We even had 9 people with appointments that we didn’t expect and 3 have given us strong potential business”.

Returning exhibitor Taj Hotels Resorts and Palaces spoke of how after 5 years of absence their participation this year at EIBTM met their business objectives. “The most important thing this year was to show our brand and educate clients, we are very satisfied by the appointments we have had, the high quality of Hosted Buyers and the incentive groups that we have closed with Italy and Belgium” said Kenny Teo, Director of Sales.

“Barcelona certainly delivered the show we were really hoping for this year and we couldn’t have had better weather to lift the spirits for this industry. Despite the global economic turmoil, the quality and professionalism of those determined to do business and drive the industry forward is testament to why this year’s event has been such a success” said Barnett.

EIBTM 2012 will take place from November 27 – 29.

Thai MICE to bounce back from floods before Q3/2012

Thai MICE to bounce back from floods before Q3/2012

TCEB launches ‘Believe in Thailand – Thailand: Destination of “CHOICES” at EIBTM 2011, Europe’s largest meeting trade show

Barcelona, 29 November 2011: Thailand is already beginning to recover from the recent floods that have impacted the country’s MICE industry. In order to ensure a strong and speedy recovery, the government is working closely with the private sector in implementing a cleanup plan, and aims to regain international confidence through TCEB’s market promotion campaign Believe in Thailand – Thailand: Destination of “CHOICES”. These measures are expected to see Thailand back on track before the third quarter of 2012.

Commenting on the impact of the flood situation on the MICE industry, Mr. Akapol Sorasuchart, President of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) explained that “Overall, 24 MICE events have beenaffected, with revenue losses estimated at Baht 3.32 billion Baht (Euro79 million) and MICE visitors down by over 250,000.

However, Suvarnabhumi International Airport, the main gateway to Thailand, serving 120 international and domestic airlines, has considerable flood protection measures in place. The airport has operated on schedule throughout, handling 800 flights per day, including all connecting flights to tourist destinations throughout Thailand such as Phuket, Chiang Mai and Suratthani.”

Continuing, Mr. Akapol added that “It’s important to note that many scheduled events have been completely unaffected, for example the Asia Pacific Golf Summit 2011 (Pattaya, 31 October – 6 November), the Nokia Incentive Group (Pattaya, 13 November – 9 December), the Amway Group (Chiang Mai, 10–26 November), and the Daikin Group (Bangkok, 22-24 November). Looking forward to 2012, large-scale incentive events such as Amway China (15 April – 15 May 2012 – 15,000 visitors). All of these will go ahead as scheduled. In terms of convention events, the 2012 Rotary International Convention with around 30,000 visitors is also confirmed to be held during 6-9 May 2012.”

In regard to the industry’s recovery from the impact of the floods, Mr. Akapol commented, “We expect to see a strong and rapid recovery for Thailand’s MICE sector. TCEB is working closely with other government agencies in the ‘Team Thailand’ and also with the private sector itself to implement remedial measures. We have together agreed on measures to be implemented in three main phases from now until March 2012. Immediate short-term measures will focus on setting up a one-stop-centre to assist MICE travellers and facilitate provision of daily updates and factsheets to the industry and all stakeholders. In the medium term, TCEB will launch confidence-boosting activities through the Believe in Thailand – Thailand: Destination of CHOICES” market promotion campaign. TCEB will also invite national leaders to join key events and issue statements personally or through video. We also have arranged to inject additional funds to promote MICE events, enhance market promotion and give financial support for events that have not been cancelled or postponed.

For the longer term, we have proposed for government consideration a Recovery Plan to stimulate both the international and domestic MICE market. This includes a proposal to give 300% tax relief on MICE expenditures, provide regular updates on progress on MICE industry’s recovery, and cooperation with the Federation of Thai Industries to provide counseling and encourage domestic tourism among those affected by the floods.

Despite the challenges facing us, TCEB believes in the principle of ‘Together we fight for Thailand’ -that through close collaboration between the government and private sector, Thailand’s MICE sector will recover completely before Q3/2012. The second phase of TCEB’s Believe in Thailand: Thailand Destination of “CHOICES”– No matter which path you choose, success is sure to follow.” marketing communication campaign will be a cornerstone of this recovery process.

This theme perfectly reflects the multitude of choices, options and settings that together make Thailand a unique and perfect location for your next business event. Our goal is to ensure that every experience is unique, with more choices now and the most choices for the future. Thailand’s MICE and travel operators work to world-class standards, and will give your event the special, personalized service it requires because the diversity of options available allows you to personally design each event to maximize your success.” Mr. Akapol explained.

Commenting on Europe’s MICE market, Mr. Akapol said “Europe’s MICE market has been affected by internal and external factors, particularly the debt crisis. For the MICE industry, projections for 2011 have been revised downwards from 100,800 to 90,000 European visitors to Thailand by year-end, in light of the situations in both Europe and Thailand.

From 22 November to 1 December 2011, TCEB will launch a marketing campaign to boost European confidence in Thailand. For example, we will highlight the major progress in preparatin of Thailand’s bid to host the World Expo 2020 through our participation at the BIE general assembly, and also during our UK Roadshow on 25 December and at EIBTM 2011 on 29 November – 1 December.

We are confident that the Believe in Thailand will help drive the MICE sector’s recovery. TCEB expects that in 2012 the number of global business travellers to Thailand will increase by approximately 5 percent to 750,000 visitors, with revenues of Euro 1.43 billion. Meanwhile over 102,000 visitors from Europe will come to Thailand”, Mr. Akapol concluded.

Aberdeen Convention Bureau to launch new marketing campaign at EITBM

Aberdeen Convention Bureau is to use EIBTM as the launch pad for its new marketing campaign, which mirrors the city’s key strengths in areas such as energy, technology, research and culture.

The Bureau is exhibiting at EIBTM (Stand G300) and will launch its ABERDEEN marketing campaign, which includes a new website, brochure and literature with slogans such as Be Inspired; Be Brilliant; Be Energised; and Be Curious.

Delegates are also being offered the chance to experience the North-east of Scotland’s golf courses for themselves, with the chance to win a five night luxury golf break to Aberdeen, including return flights and three nights’ accommodation at the five-star Marcliffe Hotel and Spa with golf at the coastal Cruden Bay, Murcar and Royal Aberdeen courses.

The prize includes an additional two nights at the rural Meldrum House Hotel, which has its own golf course and was recently named as Golf Tourism Scotland’s Country House Hotel of the Year.

The team at Aberdeen Convention Bureau proactively promotes Aberdeen City and Shire to attract new conferences to the region, which is renowned as a global energy hub and is home to many oil and gas companies.

Alesia du Plessis, Conference Support Manager at Aberdeen Convention Bureau, said the campaign reflects Aberdeen’s strengthened position as a serious conference and incentive travel destination.

“Aberdeen is now in a very strong position to be able to compete in the international marketplace, and we felt it was time to go out with a new marketing campaign which focuses very strongly on all that makes the city different and unique – from the energy industry to the expertise in areas such as life sciences and the scenery and history that’s on our doorstep.”

Aberdeen Convention Bureau works closely with the city’s two universities – the University of Aberdeen and the Robert Gordon University – and its academic community, and brings many association conferences and events to the city through its Ambassador programme.

Alesia said: “Aberdeen is known for being an energy capital but it also has a strong academic community which has helped us to secure a number of association conferences and events.

“With increased accessibility thanks to new air routes and other developments such as the Trump International golf course, new hotels and venues, we are now much better placed to offer best of both worlds to conference delegates or for incentive travel packages.

“Attending EIBTM will help us to really sell Aberdeen’s strengths in so many areas and position the North-east as a dynamic place to do business.”

New direct flights from Frankfurt are expected to appeal to European meetings and events organisers, offering access to a city which has historic castles, whisky distilleries and Donald Trump’s “world’s greatest golf course” on its doorstep.

Aberdeen’s position has been further strengthened by the opening of numerous new hotels, which have brought hundreds of additional bedrooms to the city, and new names including Park Inn by Radisson, Ibis, Jury’s Inn and Garden Inn by Hilton.

Aberdeen Convention Bureau proactively promotes Aberdeen City and Shire to attract new conferences and events to the region, organising and hosting site inspection visits with invited conference organisers to showcase the area’s best venues and facilities.

Business tourism is crucial to the wider Scottish economy, with an economic benefit of £1billion a year.

Parthen Meeting Services presents: Edison

This December, live at the EIBTM in Barcelona, Parthen Meeting Services will give a preview of its new online registration software called Edison. From the 29th of November until December 1st, you can drop by their stand (O280 & P240) and learn more about this online software package.

Jaap Bakker, Managing Director at Parthen Meeting Services, tells us what makes Edison different than other software packages. “It’s a unique, efficient and price attractive package, perfect for everyone who needs to organize an event. Easy to use, no strings attached and no hidden fees. The fact that Edison has its own currency, you buy and pay with credits, makes it different than other online registration software. And that’s only one feature of many more…”

Agile
In less than six months Parthen has developed the first part of Edison. They started with a blank sheet, a great knowledge and 22 years of experience in congress registration. They are working in a way called ‘agile development’, which is, in a nutshell, a method based on short cycles and incremental development, which allows them to deliver a new product/version every thirty days. Summarized: Edison will get even better over time and will fulfil the wishes and needs of the market.

HTML5
Edison is made with the latest HTML technology, HTML5. Many of you heard about HTML and some of you know how to use it. HTML makes it possible to view websites in an organized way so that your brain can understand it. It is technology, which helps us to design and produce user-friendly software. And Edison claims to be user-friendly; Parthen even tells us it’s ‘dummy proof’. Jaap Bakker: “The use of Edison does not require support. Support is available though, but you will be charged for it. The promise is that you will only pay once for support, which means that you never pay twice for a question asked earlier. We also log those questions and all answers.”

Presentations will be held at stand 0280, from 10:30 am until 15:30 pm.

The appeal of the city to business visitors is increasing as the destination’s reputation grows; Liverpool has recently been voted as the UK’s friendliest city by Condé Nast Traveller.  On the back of such accolades Liverpool is bucking the national trend with growth in tourism spend and visitors, representing Liverpool’s renowned warm welcome the city is well known for.

MacPhie will give an on-stand presentation on Wednesday 30th November at 1.15pm, detailing key messages including the Exhibition Centre and the major events coming to Liverpool next year.

China’s industry leaders gather at EIBTM to discuss the global impact the country is having on the Meetings Sector

For the first time, EIBTM (www.eibtm.com) is to present a China Meetings Summit, to give the international meetings industry a view of how the world’s economic power house is determined to succeed on the global stage winning high profile business led events.

As economists look to China and it’s potential for 70% growth over the next 5 years, conversations are leading towards one critical conclusion – If a business isn’t positioned in the Chinese market or serving clients in that region, high growth is going to be difficult to achieve. The China Meetings Summit will look at the meetings industry from a first tier destination perspective and from a meeting planner perspective, bringing a highly interactive session with live debate and presentations from some of China’s key industry leaders, showing how they are competing for business with the rest of the world.

Craig Moyes, Group Exhibition Director, IBTM Portfolio commented “The IBTM portfolio of events includes CIBTM – the annual event for the meetings industry that was launched in Beijing in 2005. Year on year this event grows from not only an international, local and regional exhibitor base but also from a Hosted Buyer and trade visitor perspective. Strategically located in the capital city of China, and the getaway for government and industry, the influence that CIBTM has on the industry sector, both inbound and outbound from China, gives us the opportunity to bring this perspective to our biggest event, EIBTM.”

The panel, facilitated by Eric Rozenberg (Non-Executive Chair of the IBTM Portfolio and President of Swantegy Ltd) will assess the new business mix in China and the increasing importance of meetings to in the success to secure business. Discussions will also consider the impacts of national and domestic business giants and their impact on the outbound meetings markets as well as the impact major events such as the Olympic Games (Beijing) have had on the success of their economy.

Other topics for discussion will cover anticipated growth for the industry, the development of the domestic meetings industry and the ways in which the local trade and infrastructure is helping to meet the perpetuating needs of a meetings industry which is expanding at an exponential rate.

The panel will comprise Golfer Gao (Deputy Director of High-end Tourism Department, Beiging Municipal Commission of Tourism Development), Patrick Chen (Deputy Director of International Tourism Promotion Department, Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration), Mr. William Wei (Deputy General Manager, China National Convention Center), Mr. George Qiao (Deputy Director of Department of International Cooperation, China Electronic Chamber of Commerce), Les Sinclair (Director, Regional Accounts, Global Synergies) and Ms. DSally Greenhill, Managing Director, The Right Solution).

The China Meetings Summit will take place on Tuesday 29th November at 3:30 – 4:30pm (conference room 5.3) at EIBTM this year. Please visit www.eibtm.com for more information and ways to attend.

Poland, Country of Young Leaders!

Poland, Country of Young Leaders!

Rob Davidson the esteemed expert of Meeting Industry, from University of Greenwich, made his decision! Among hundreds of Essays, choose the 20 best ones, giving to 20 people, working in the meeting industry (under30) the possibility to attend one of the most appealing training of the industry – Forum for Young Professionals, Barcelona 2011. Invitation to these elite training was the prize in a competition for young professionals (under 30), whose task was to write an essay on one of the four themes proposed by the organizers. This year Poland doubled the success! Two participants, Agata Walczak-Ziller, Gdansk Convention Bureau and Davide Odella, Trip Group Warsaw (DMC and PCO) are going to attend the Forum. The 2011 Forum for Young Professional organized and sponsored by ICCA (the International Congress and Convention Association) and EIBTM (international exhibition of tourism business in Barcelona).

FYP is an incredible few day meeting of young professionals from different countries and continents. Delegates have seminars with world-renowned experts in the meetings industry, such as Corbin Ball and Miguel Neves, Graeme Barnett and many others who will share his experiences with the group. During the workshops delegates’ task is to prepare a BID. They will have an opportunity to test their presentation skills. The training also allows to look at meetings industry from different perspectives: venues, destinations, associations.

In 2010 among the winners there was Polish representative – Marta Wisniewska from Gdansk Convention Bureau: ‘FYP was an absolutely fantastic experience! The meeting gave me a valuable chance to build personal and professional network. I had the honour of working with world famous experts and learning from their experience. The training helped me to identify new trends in meetings industry, expand my world view and basically let me see new possibilities. I encourage everyone to apply for it.’

Does it mean Poland focus on Generation Y? First of all Poland is fast growing convention destination in Europe. Just to mention few rising stars of eastern Europe: Warsaw, Gdansk, Krakow. What’s the key to the success? They simply follow international trend – Generation Y is a future of meetings industry. Polish PCOs, Convention Bureaux, DMCs, Venues, Suppliers – they employ young professionals to develop business faster than competitors. Can Generation Y lead the polish meetings industry on their own? Of course not. They still need the support of more experienced colleagues but they can give fresh breeze to eastern European market. Young professionals implement new technologies faster, they are loyal, dedicated, creative and enthusiastic. That is the core of polish model. Professional, enthusiastic team is the key factor of success of every company.

ITN INTERNATIONAL TRIUMPHS AT EIBTM TECHNOLOGY WATCH AWARDS WITH THE ULTIMATE DELEGATE PASS

ITN International, a US-based event analytics provider, has scooped EIBTM’s Technology Watch Award for 2011 (www.eibtm.com). The company beat a record number of entrants in the judging process, which recognises and rewards technological innovation in the meetings and events industry.

The company was chosen to receive the award in recognition of its Citywide Attendee Credential, an attendee badge that doubles as a free pass to public transit and tourist attractions throughout a host city.

ITN International will present their winning product during EIBTM 2011, a Reed Travel Exhibition at the Future Events Experience on Wednesday at 14:30 followed by a Networking Drinks Reception. To view the full schedule of speakers and events at the Future Events Experience and Technology Hour sessions, go to www.eibtm.com/whatson

Ivan Lazarev, President and CEO, ITN International commented: “We are honoured to have been singled out for this award. The successful test of our new Citywide Attendee Credential proves we can support a ‘total’ attendee credential. That’s good news both for destination marketing organisations and event organisers”.

“Our citywide badge performs a double duty, enabling a DMO to grant attendees access to its city’s infrastructure and attractions, while enabling an organiser to meet their needs for attendee tracking, access control and exhibitor lead retrieval. The ‘seamless’ experience the credential gives attendees means DMOs can at long last co-brand their cities and the events they host effectively.”

The esteemed judging panel chaired by Corbin Ball (CEO of Corbin Ball Associates) comprised Michelle Bruno (CMP, CEM, President, Bruno Group Signature Events), Martin Sirk (CEO, ICCA), Bruce M. MacMillan, (President/CEO, MPI), Paul Hussey (Business Development Director, BSI Meetings and Events), Samuel J. Smith (Technology Consultant & Editor, Interactive Meeting Technology Blog) and Ruud W. Janssen (Managing Director,TNOC).

Entrants were judged by a weighting system of scoring that included marks for innovation and uniqueness, the impact their product could have on the meetings industry, its value in terms of ROI and pricing.

In addition to the overall award winner, the panel also recognised four further finalists, who highlight several paths of technology progress for events.

Wifarer has refined existing Wi-Fi systems within a venue to pinpoint a smartphone’s location to an accuracy of 1.3 meters. This “indoor positioning system” can provide very precise way finding for attendees though a meeting venue or exhibit hall, while providing location-aware content delivery and aggregated attendee movement analytics.

GenieMobile provides a high quality, yet easy-to-use, “do-it-yourself” mobile app development tool for events. The menu of application choices is very robust and they are delivered as native apps to iPhone, Android, BlackBerry, WindowsPhone and as a mobile web site. The DIY model enables at a lower price point than commonly found in these products as well as unprecedented control of the app content.

Active Network, Events points to the increasing power of tablet computers at events. The comprehensive suite of mobile and tablet applications gives the event organiser unprecedented real-time access to registration data, lead retrieval, social networking, exhibitor management, session tracking and scheduling tool, event mobile app usage, housing, financial statements, speaker resources and content management on an iPad and other mobile devices.

Triqle Event Intelligence -”What’s On?” is a simple and inexpensive idea – to publish real-time event program data to any device with and internet connection allowing attendees to see at a glance what is going on now and next. This eliminates the need for scrolling or searching the most current programme item.

Corbin Ball, Chairman of the EIBTM Technology Watch judging panel commented, “Having received a record number of submissions this year – 56 in total – this year’s winner and four finalists were among dozens of exceptionally strong entries. Technology innovation is revolutionizing the business process for events and exhibitions and I am very pleased to participate again in the Technology Watch as it highlights some of the best new concepts within the industry.”

The EIBTM Technology Watch is the most high profile and longest running technology recognition scheme which acts as a major opportunity for companies to demonstrate new and innovative technology solutions that have the capacity to make a real difference to the business of meeting and event planning.

NEW VENUES FOR  Hosted Buyer Icebreaker

Welcome Reception Club Night

The award winning City of Barcelona and the Barcelona Turisme Convention Bureau, has joined forces with Reed Travel Exhibitions (RTE) and local event partners to create a number of new venues for the networking events at this year’s EIBTM (29th November to 1st December) celebrating its 23rd anniversary.

The EIBTM Welcome Reception will, for the first time, take place outside of the Fira in the centre of the City and around the famous Barcelona Magical Fountains. Created in 1929 for the Great Universal Exhibition, the fountains today produce a colour and light display that will form part of the evening’s entertainment. Courtesy transfers will, as usual, be provided for the 15-minute journey from Fira De Barcelona to the City centre.

This year’s first EIBTM networking event is the Hosted Buyer Icebreaker, on Monday 28th November which will take place at the 5 star ME Barcelona (Melia Hotels) situated in the centre of town, and designed by renowned French architect Dominique Perrault. The venue is considered a dramatic new contemporary addition to the Barcelona hotel scene and the evening will bring the Hosted Buyer community together to network with each other prior to the start of the exhibition.

Barcelona’s top nightspot – Opium Mar – will be the new venue for EIBTM Club Night, which takes place on Wednesday evening 30th November. Recently voted one of the “Finest Clubs in the World,” and the venue in the city for some of the globe’s top recording artists’ live performances, the evening will be similar in concept to previous years but in a brand new indoor and outdoor space for everyone who attends EIBTM.

“We decided that 2011 would be a year for change and innovation for our networking events. As Barcelona continues to win industry awards, we have been working closely with our partners at the Barcelona Turisme Convention Centre to deliver a combination of venues and events that we believe really will help celebrate our 8th year in the City. The combination of venues really gives the city an opportunity to show the diversity of their event space plus it gives all of our exhibitors, Hosted Buyers and Trade Visitors the opportunity to enjoy the social aspects of EIBTM in environments that also allows for the option of business to continue”, commented Graeme Barnett, EIBTM Event Director.

Business Opportunities to increase at EIBTM 2011

Business Opportunities to increase at EIBTM 2011

Research confirms Hosted Buyer appointments could head for 10% increase on 2010

Research following the success of EIBTM 2010 (www.eibtm.com) has shown that both buyers and suppliers want the organisers Reed Travel Exhibitions (RTE) to find ways of achieving even more opportunities to do business during the event. 65% of Hosted Buyers did or will do between €50,000 and €1m of business as a result of their attendance at EIBTM according to the research.

RTE is now set to make changes to its Pre-Scheduled Appointment system and has announced that it will increase the number of matched appointments from 6 to 7 per day of attendance for all buyers. This will result in an approximate increase of 10% more PSA’s for 2011 with some 60,000 meetings expected to take place over the three days of EIBTM.

The EIBTM PSA system allows Buyers to select their exhibitor preferences in order of priority. This additional appointment will create a fuller diary, enabling the buyers to plan their time more efficiently as more of their choices will be matched by the system, and for exhibitors it will also mean more opportunities to do business during show time.

Says Graeme Barnett, EIBTM Event Director: “The return on investment for buyers and suppliers attending EIBTM is top of our agenda and as their satisfaction is part measured by the business achieved onsite, we want to create more opportunities to satisfy the demand.

“Our Hosted Buyer PSA system programmes the majority of buyers’ preferences, however over 62% of buyers still schedule additional appointments through their diaries. By increasing the number to be matched and re-scheduling some of the Hosted Buyer education programme, we are facilitating more appointments each day. So, this small increase of just one PSA per day of attendance may mean that the overall increase could be as high as 10% or over 60,000 meetings during the 3 day event. At the same time, exhibitors will have fuller diaries to also add to their ROI for the event.”

Barnett concludes: “The potential value of all these meetings for future business is staggering. We are continually looking to enhance our existing methods of bringing buyer and sellers together and where possible developing new ways to facilitate additional business opportunities.”

EIBTM RESEARCH PROVES BUSINESS RESULTS

EIBTM RESEARCH PROVES BUSINESS RESULTS

96% of Exhibitors Agree EIBTM is Vital to Their Business

95% of Hosted Buyers Were Satisfied with Their Visit to EIBTM

EIBTM (www.eibtm.com) announces research findings that reveal EIBTM 2010 successfully delivered valuable business opportunities for exhibitors, Hosted Buyers and trade visitors.

The EIBTM 2010 onsite and post-show research indicated that 96% of exhibitors agree that EIBTM is important to their business and 94% of exhibitors agreed that EIBTM is a must attend industry event.

Jordi Camps, Co-founder and CEO of China a la Carta said: “EIBTM provided us with the opportunity of meeting real buyers and creating powerful new networks. The event exceeded our expectations in terms of the number of quality meetings we had. EIBTM 2010 will clearly translate into a significant amount of business for 2011. We will be returning next year due to this year’s success.”

“The ‘World of DMC’s’ stand at EIBTM 2010 provided a successful platform for creating new business relationships with MICE partners from around the globe. With over 800 appointments in total, the stand allowed for plenty of networking, connecting with EIBTM visitors and sharing valuable industry relations with fellow DMC partners”, says Steffi Kordy, Director of Marketing and Sales for GMS Chicago, member of the World of DMC’s.

The findings indicated that 98.5% of Hosted Buyers were satisfied with EIBTM 2010, and 89% confirmed they will place future orders as a direct result of the show. A very strong majority of Hosted Buyers, 99%, believed that EIBTM 2010 allowed them to meet current suppliers and gave them the opportunity talk to product experts.

“EIBTM 2010 was, as always, a tremendously beneficial event. I made a number of great new contacts and was able to flesh out several new agreements as a direct result of my time in Barcelona” says Jim Walker, President, Crossing Boundaries.

Jan Čurda, Sales Manager, Marriott International Czech Republic said: “EIBTM’s Hosted Buyer Programme was fantastic, as it allowed me to network with many new and existing contacts… and I achieved a number of promising leads.”

97.5% of trade visitors at EIBTM 2010 were satisfied with the event and the same percentage of visitors is planning on returning in 2011. The research also revealed that 54% of EIBTM’s trade visitors did not attend any other industry show during 2010.

Barnett concludes: “In addition to helping us meet our clients’ business objectives, our research also serves as a valuable tool for helping identify gaps in the market and also budding trends. For example, the findings illustrated that incentive travel is making a comeback. Last year’s figures for the number of incentive travel events organised nearly doubled compared to the previous year. Knowing this is crucial, in order that our team can devise and tailor programmes, such as our industry renowned professional Education Programme, to best support our stakeholders.”

INDEPENDENT ABC AUDIT VERIFIES EIBTM 2010 SHOW ATTENDANCE

INDEPENDENT ABC AUDIT VERIFIES EIBTM 2010 SHOW ATTENDANCE

A New EIBTM Visitor Attendance Record

EIBTM (www.eibtm.com) confirms the official information about its December 2010 event, with the results of an independent audit carried out by ABC, confirming a new EIBTM record for visitor attendance.

The event’s Total Unique Attendance*, which includes exhibiting personnel, was 14,241, a 3.7% increase on 2009.  This figure can be split into Visitor and Exhibitor Attendance, allowing clear clarification:

  • Visitor Attendance including Hosted Buyers was recorded as 8,376, the highest ever total number of visitors at EIBTM, marking a 2.5% increase on 2009.
  • Exhibitor personnel increased 5.5% on 2009 figures, reaching 5,865 at EIBTM 2010.

Graeme Barnett, EIBTM Exhibition Director, comments: “We recognise how important it is to provide all our stakeholders with independently verified statistics. This allows them to evaluate their own ROI and can be a reliable method for evaluating and analysing the success of EIBTM as it evolves.”

Barnett continues: “Attracting strong visitor numbers is key, however, as the leading global event for the meetings and incentive industry, EIBTM is not just about driving attendees. It’s also about delivering quality audiences that include top level decision-makers and senior level buyers.”

The EIBTM 2010 audit was carried out by ABC, an independent industry body that audits exhibitions, providing independent verification of exhibition attendance figures.

Alden Arnold from ABC, comments: “When deciding whether to take a stand at an event, exhibitors need accurate, unbiased information about the show. The success of an exhibition is measured by the quantity and quality of the attendees.  Exhibitors often accept the word of the organiser on attendance figures – an ABC certificate gives credibility and written evidence to support these claims.”

MALAYSIA WINS BEST STAND DESIGN OVERALL AWARD AT EIBTM 2010

Kuala Lumpur, 17 December 2010 – Malaysia took home the top honour for winning the Best Stand Design Overall award at the recent EIBTMi, The Global Meetings & Events Exhibition held in Barcelona, Spain.
The EIBTM Stand Awards were created to recognise and acknowledge the brightest, busiest and best stands at this year’s show. There were eight categories scored by independent judges who visited over 300 stands from 90 countries before selecting the best in each category.

“The Malaysian stand design was based on a contemporary interpretation of Malaysia using the iconic PETRONAS Twin Towers as the central structure and the four corners of the stand for live performances depicting the unique blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian and Indigenous cultures. The performances along with the traditional ‘teh tarik’ tea-pulling demonstration by champion Meor proved to be a crowd pleaser,” said head of delegation, Mr Zulkefli Hj Sharif, Chief Executive Officer, Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau.
Malaysia’s cultural diversity is one of the country’s greatest attributes for facilitating business events that must cater for a global audience.

Summing up perfectly Malaysia’s award-winning stand, Rob Allen, Chief Executive of experimental marketing and events agency TRO said, “The judges applauded this stand because it delivered against a combination of clear-cut practical factors and attractive, emotional notes. The stand stood out predominantly through its clear, high level branding and strong reference to the PETRONAS Twin Towers. The central space accommodated small meetings, a discreet circular space for larger presentations and hospitality. The delegate seating plan was prominently signed. The environment was made very inviting through attractive finishing touches with fabrics, textures and lighting.

“Finally, the four corners of the space were dramatised through a small stage effect where performers dressed in national costumes engaged with visitors, answering questions and even demonstrating the traditional game of ‘congkak’.”
Mr Zulkefli continued, “The recognition given by the independent judges testified to the success of our stand’s design, effectiveness and the unique multi-cultural experience offered to visitors at the Malaysian pavilion.”
Led by the Malaysia Convention & Exhibition Bureau (MyCEB), this year’s EIBTM saw participation from 14 Malaysian industry partners.

EIBTM is one of the world’s leading global meetings and incentive exhibition held in Barcelona, Spain annually. The three-day event attracted over 8,395 people plus 3,125 exhibiting companies from 90 countries.
