The Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau, on behalf of the Royal Thai Government, has worked closely together with Rotary clubs in Thailand since 2004 to promote Thailand as host of the 2012 Rotary International Convention by submitting a Bid Book to Rotary International. In the Bid Book, TCEB, as a government agent and a financial supporter, has submitted a letter of financial support in the amount of 270 million baht, which gained consent from the cabinet on March 8th, 2012, for Thailand to hold such a convention. There were three cities at the time that qualified for consideration by the executive directors of Rotary International, including Sydney, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok. The major responsibilities in holding such a grand event were then assigned to several public and private agencies including the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, TCEB and the Tourism Authority of Thailand.”
“For the first time ever, Thailand has the great honor to host the 2012 Rotary International Convention, and this year’s convention is expected to welcome over 30,000 Rotarians from all corners of the world. It is estimated that most of the attendees will spend 2-3 times more than an average tourist does in Thailand. The convention is therefore anticipated to significantly boost the Thai MICE and tourism industries and to generate over 3 Billion Baht in revenue.”, added Ms. Pensuda.
TCEB today presented its MICE policy to the new government, incorporating a 5-year plan to develop the MICE industry from 2012-2016 in line with the 11th National Economic and Social Development Plan (2012-2016). “Therefore, TCEB is confident that by implementing the 5-year MICE industry development plan, working together with the industry, we can establish Thailand as a MICE hub for Asia by the year 2016. Our aim is to increase the level of awareness of Thailand among MICE travelers. We estimate that by 2016 Thailand will be able to attract 75% more MICE travelers, or 1.4 million visitors per year, with revenues reach 1.3 billion baht.
She further noted that, “The convention will provide an excellent opportunity for Thailand to demonstrate the outstanding capabilities of its MICE industry to the world, and pave the way for it to become a leading MICE industry hub in the region. Moreover, it will also help promote Thailand’s brand new tourism campaign – ‘Miracle Thailand’ – which is being actively implemented by the Thai government.”
The event will play an important part in helping to promote Thailand economically and socially to the world, underscoring the country’s outstanding MICE capabilities. It will also be a great platform for Thailand to impress Rotarians with the country’s great cultural and tourism values. In this regard, over 30 public and private sectors from various fields including entertainment, event organization and security – have been assigned to work together in creating a spectacular event to remember.
Mr. Thongchai Sridama, Board of Director and Acting President of TCEB, said that, “TCEB has worked actively and supportively together with Rotary clubs in Thailand for many years in bringing this grand event to Thailand. Our most recent role was in organizing meetings with various public and private sectors to ensure that each and every aspect of the event will reflect well on the country.”
The emphasis of such meetings was on the following four areas.
- 1. To ensure fast, convenient immigration process for incoming delegates. This undertaking has received warm collaboration from the Department of Consular Affairs, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
- 2. To arrange a warm welcome for incoming delegates at Suvarnabhumi Airport. Tasks have been assigned to three major agencies on this matter. Firstly, Airports of Thailand Plc. or AOT will arrange all relevant welcome signage, as well as, install welcome counters at Baggage Claim belts. Secondly, the Immigration Office will be responsible for arranging a special fast lane and providing sufficient personnel to accommodate a speedy immigration process for such a large number of delegates. ‘Visa On Arrival’ service will also be available. Thirdly, the Department of Consular Affairs will help facilitate the customs process for delegates bringing in documents and items related to the convention.
- 3. To ensure dependable safety and efficient traffic management. On this front, special shuttle bus services will be available for delegates staying at 56 participating hotels, facilitating travel between their hotels and convention venues throughout the convention period. As many as 20 special bus stops will be arranged for this purpose.
- 4. To raise the awareness of the event among the general Thai public. They will be invited to be ‘good hosts’ for visitors. Such efforts will be promoted in Bangkok and other major MICE cities including Phuket, Chiang Mai and Pattaya – all of which will be visited by participating Rotarians before, during and after the convention.
Moreover, in major overseas markets, there will be PR activities, such as trade shows and road shows, to promote Thailand’s capabilities in organizing such a world-class event.
“The success of this event will undoubtedly go a long way in underlining Thailand’s readiness to host world-class MICE events, which is exactly in line with the missions and aims of TCEB to steer the country to become the leading MICE hub in ASEAN. Additionally, this grand, international event will contribute greatly to generating substantial MICE revenue for the country. TCEB anticipates that Thailand will welcome as many as 750,000 MICE visitors and earn as much as 60 Billion Baht worth of MICE revenue in 2012.”, explained, Mr. Thongchai.
Mr. Noraseth Pathamanand, Chair, Host Organization Committee of 2012 Rotary International Convention, revealed that, “In addition to the core activities which are held every year such as group and regional meetings of Rotarians, this year’s convention will also feature special addresses by various world-renowned Keynote Speakers including Muhamad Yunas, Nobel Prize winner of 2006; Hugh Evans, CEO of the Global Poverty Project; and, Amanda Martin of the Global Health Access Program. The event will also present voluntary activities of Rotarians from many nations in over 100 booths. What makes this year’s event even more special is that Rotarians will use it as a platform to celebrate their success in raising 202 Million USD in new funding for worldwide polio eradication – Rotary’s top philanthropic goal. This Rotary fundraising campaign was in response to an initial grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. As a result of achieving the campaign milestone six months early, the Foundation awarded Rotary an additional 405 Million Baht. All funds will support polio immunization activities in affected countries where this vaccine-preventable disease continues to paralyze children.”
With the aim to create positive impressions for Rotarians and participants from around the world, Thailand, as the host nation, has planned a variety of exciting activities for them, all of which will be under the theme of ‘The Land of a Thousand Smiles’. The theme symbolizes the Thai culture of always extending goodwill to visitors. The mascots of the convention are ‘Nong Yim’ and ‘Nong Yam’, a Thai boy and a Thai girl in traditional loincloths, who will act as ambassadors in welcoming all the guests. One of this year’s biggest highlights is to form 2012 people into the shape of Thailand’s biggest smile in history – the phenomenon of which will be recorded by “Ripley’s Believe It or Not”. Moreover, the ‘House of Friendship’ will be created and adorned with beautiful flowers from the Doi Tung Development Project. All of these aforementioned activities are expected to create lasting impressions for visitors from around the world as they are truly special activities never seen elsewhere before.
In addition, Rotary Thailand will also present great performances by prominent artists. Such shows include the following.
A mini-concert by Tata Young, a famous Thai singer who will perform songs specially composed for this event.
- A world premiere of the musical entitled “A Boy and a Tiger”, directed by famous composer Bruce Gaston who has been recognized with the distinguished Silpathorn National Artist award in 2009.
“Furthermore, Rotary International will hold the Rotary World Peace Symposium in Thailand 1-2 days prior to the 2012 Rotary International Convention. The Rotary World Peace Symposium is held every three years and it is an honor and a good opportunity for Thailand to promote its reputation as a peaceful country. Thailand is one of Rotary’s six Peace Centers in the world. Most of this year’s activities will focus on promoting the goodwill of friendship which is Rotary International’s top philosophy.”,concluded Mr. Noraseth.
The 2012 Rotary International Convention is scheduled to be staged at IMPACT Exhibition and Convention Center, Muang Thong Thani, during May 6th to 9th, 2012, approximately about a month from now. This year’s concept is to create happiness through smiles, with the slogan: “The Land of a Thousand Smiles,” symbolizing the Thai culture of always extending goodwill to those who come to visit. The mascots of the convention are Nong Yim and Nong Yam, a Thai boy and a Thai girl in traditional loincloths, who will act as ambassadors in welcoming over 38,000 Rotary members from all over the world.
The highlights of this convention are several world-renowned Keynote Speakers, such as Muhammad Yunus, Nobel Prize winner of 2006, Hugh Evans, CEO of the Global Poverty Project, and Amanda Martin of the Global Health Access Program. Additionally, Rotary members will also celebrate their success in raising more than $200 million in new funding for polio eradication – Rotary’s top philanthropic goal. All funds will support polio immunization activities in affected countries where this vaccine-preventable disease continues to paralyze children.
Mr. Noraseth added that “The convention is primarily supported by the TCEB, who will host this year’s convention with Rotary. Working with Thai Rotary, TCEB will play an important role, having successfully made a bid to host a convention in the year 2005, as well as in providing continual support and funds in preparation for the convention. Support and cooperation also came from the Tourism Authority of Thailand, who oversee accommodation and travel arrangements for the participants, of whom most will stay and tour around Thailand after the convention. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration also lends its support by decorating and maintaining the Bangkok area and organizing a variety of activities slated to be ready for the visitors’ arrival.

Mr. Akapol Sorasuchart, President of Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau or TCEB and co-host, mentioned that, “Pushing for the title of host for international conventions is TCEB’s main mission as we are committed to promoting the MICE industries as the principal businesses that will generate revenue and drive the economy of Thailand. Rotary International is a big convention, with many various businesses and individuals from all over the world participating, thus restoring confidence and the country’s image from the crisis we have recently undergone. It will also help to present Thailand in a different light under the campaign, “Believe in Thailand.”
TCEB together with Rotary clubs in Thailand have worked together since 2004 to promote Thailand as host of the Rotary International Convention 2012 by submitting a Bid Book to Rotary International. As an attachment to the Bid Book, TCEB, as a government agent and a financial supporter, has submitted a letter of financial support in the amount of 270 million baht to organize 2012 Rotary International Convention. There were three cities at the time that qualified for consideration by the executive directors of Rotary International, including Sydney, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.
On January12th, 2007, TCEB signed the financial support contract for 2012 Rotary International Convention in the amount of 270 million baht, which gained consent from the cabinet on March 8th, 2012 for Thailand to hold such convention.
2012 Rotary International Convention is a very important event for Thailand as it is an indication of the cooperation between Government and private sectors in order to develop MICE industries. Just to note, the Russians took only the 8th place in 2010. Russia outstripped such countries as Korea, USA, Germany, France, UK, and giving way only for Malaysia (2.5 million people), China (1.76 million) and Japan (1.12 million).
The share of the Russians in the total world’s tourist flow to Thailand increased by 2% and amounted to 5.3%. In general, almost 19.8 million foreign tourists visited Thailand in 2011 (+20% in comparison with 2010).
Just to note, according to ATOR Analytical Service, Thailand became one of the priority destinations for the Russians during New Year holidays. A great influence on the growth of tourist flow to Asian countries was exerted by the situation in Egypt. A great excess of the air transportation played its role as well. The operators often had to sell the tickets for unprofitable price. According to the results of the year the tourist flow to Thailand increased but the profit of the tour operators reduced. source: www.atorus.ru
Fastener Fair Thailand 2012
Driving Thailand as ASEAN’s exhibition hub
Bangkok: 25 January 2012 –Famed international exhibition organizer Mack Brooks Exhibitions Limited brings to Thailand for the first time the renowned Fastener Fair to cater demand of cost-effective fastening and fixing solutions in Thailand and its neighboring countries, further portraying Thailand as the central hub of exhibition business in Southeast Asia and beyond.
Fastener Fair Thailand 2012 will bring together in one roof the latest technological innovations and cost-effective solutions for the automotive, electronics, infrastructure, airport and general manufacturing industries right in the heart of Thailand and ASEAN region, with 120 international and local exhibitors, numerous international pavilions and at least 5,000 trade visitors from around the world. The event will take place on September 6-8, 2012 at BITEC Bang Na.
Mr. Mangkorn Dhanasarnsilp, Vice Chairman of The Federation of Thai Industries, explained that the fastener and fixing industry is essential in the production chain for the interrelated industries of electronics, automobiles and furnitures. One of the pillars of Thai industry is automobile production, which utilizes the largest number of pieces of fastener and fixing items.
The domestic and global automotive industry is expected to recover in the first half of this year, resulting in more demands for automobile parts. Therefore, the more-than 2,000 automotive part producers in Thailand have to supply both the domestic and export markets to support the growth of the global automobile producers. It is expected that the automotive parts industry will grow by 12% in the first quarter of 2012, which is already evidenced by strong initial orders.
“With the bright outlook in automotive industry, the fastener and fixing industry will certainly see the growth in their business as well as the Thai economy as a whole,” Mr. Mangkorn said.
Mrs. Supawan Teerarat, Director of Exhibition Department, Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) said, “TCEB has the primary commitment to support, promote and develop the Thai exhibition industry to move towards being the top player at ASEAN level under the campaign “Believe in Thailand.” The strategy in 2012 will emphasize on establishing the country’s image as the hub of exhibition in ASEAN by attracting international exhibitions with niche profiles at the scale serving visitors from the Southeast Asian region—such as the support to Fastener Fair Thailand 2012, which is a brand new show for this year.”
The support to Fastener Fair Thailand 2012 is significant to the country for fair organizers, exhibitors and visitors, as they will experience the potential of Thailand in being the production bases of fastener and fixing industry and the world-class exhibition venue for business. TCEB has professionally supported the staging of Fastener Fair Thailand 2012 with activities including visits to the venue and marketing research to help establish business opportunities in the region. The bureau also supported marketing campaigns in foreign markets by offering promotion to fair visitors such as the “100 A-HEAD” campaign to draw visitors from countries in the ASEAN Plus Six region and the “Be My Guest” program, which offers accommodations to large buyers.
Mr. Michael Wilton, Exhibition Director of Mack Brooks Exhibitions Limited said “Thailand is a major fastener markets. Demand for fasteners and fixings are on the rise on the back of the bright outlook of the major fasteners and fixing users such as automotive, electronics, infrastructure and airport industry. Not to mention that Thailand is gaining momentum to become the hub of ASEAN manufacturing industry.”
Thailand’s automotive sector grew by 64% in 2010 and is forecasted to be one of the top 10 producers of cars by 2015 with a 10% growth rate for car production. During January to November, 2011, the automotive parts export from Thailand totaled to 14.778 billion baht, which was higher than the total value in 2010 at 14.45 billion baht.
Thailand has become the center of automobile production in Asia by producing more than 1 million units since 2003 and in 2012. The Thailand Automotive Institute projects that production will exceed 2 million units for the first time in the history, pushing Thailand as one of the top 10 global automobile producers.
In the electronics industry, 85% of Thailand’s electronic goods production are for export. Electronics and electrical appliances saw 108 projects, with a total investment of $950 million.
Additionally, the outlook of the infrastructure is second to none. Modernization and development of the urban traffic network in Bangkok will be a driving factor. A $50 billion high-speed rail network between Thailand and China—transnational rail link between Greater Mekong countries with investment of $130 million—is also in the pipeline.
Mr. Wilton further explained that even though the recent floods gravely affected several communities and industrial estates in Thailand, historical data has shown that Thailand is incredibly resilient to such setbacks and industries are predicted to recover quickly.
“In the absence of a fair focusing of fastening solutions and trade in this region, the time seems ripe to bring the Fastener Fair model to this marketplace. The exhibitors will display their cost-saving products which in turn will help users cut their total production cost. Cost of each fastener and fixing item may be little but industries have to use them in large quantity so a cut in price per piece will result in an effective cost saving,” Mr. Wilton noted.
“TCEB has a strong confidence that the Fastener Fair Thailand 2012 will create business connections and trade negotiations domestically and regionally especially among countries in ASEAN. Thailand pays high attention to this market in order to prepare Thai industries in entering the ASEAN Economic Community. The staging of this fair is forecasted to bring the total MICE visitors in 2012 to reach 750,000 and to generate revenue of over 60.12 billion baht to the country, more than 8 billion baht of which will come from exhibition industry,” Mrs. Supawan concluded.
Fastener Fair’s flagship event was first launched in Stuttgart, Germany and was later followed by the Fastener Fair series, which includes Fastener Fair Hannover, Germany; Fastener Fair India; Fastener Fair Brazil and the next and exciting Fastener Fair Thailand.

THAI Launches Biofuels Flight and First Biofuels Passenger Flight in Asia through Travel Green Initiative
Thai Airways International (THAI) is set to be the first airline in Asia to fly a commercial passenger flight using biofuels, to support the Company’s Travel Green initiative as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program.
Mr. Piyasvasti Amranand, President of THAI, said that under the Environmental and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy, or “Travel Green,” THAI has developed an important project on sustainability, in line with His Majesty the King’s vision on renewable energy. In raising environmental awareness and the effects of global warming THAI, as the national carrier, has opted to operate a commercial flight using biofuel renewable energy as one way to help in the reduction of carbon dioxide. THAI hopes that its support and participation in using biofuels will encourage other carriers in the region to choose biofuel renewable energy over fossil fuels.
To reach sustained production of biofuels for aviation in Thailand, THAI will bring together organizations and businesses such as petroleum producers, research firms, educational institutions, aircraft and engine manufacturers, and different government bodies affiliated with the aviation industry to take part in the development. This project called “Sustainable Biofuels Development for Aviation Industry” aims to create both demand and supply, through clear national policies on biofuels, which can help to generate revenue in the agricultural sector. An important outcome is the potential for greater cooperation among the different aviation bodies at the national level for sound support and policies on sustained development of biofuels.
In order to boost awareness and support use of aviation biofuels in Thailand, THAI is operating its “THAI First Flight with Biofuels” TG8421 on 21 December 2011. This inaugural biofuels flight departs from Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport at 14.00 hours on Boeing 777-200 aircraft, carrying members of the press and representatives from organizations and government functions that support the biofuels project, such as PTT Public Company Limited, Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Limited, Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited, Rolls Royce, and Boeing.
On 22 December 2011, THAI’s flight TG104 from Bangkok to Chiang Mai, will be the “The First Passenger Biofuels Flight in Asia”. Revenue from this flight will go towards the development of renewable energy in Thailand. In an effort to promote environmental awareness among youths, THAI is flying 100 students and teachers on flight TG104 called the “Pah Nong Tong Fah”.
Mr. Saran Rangkasiri, Executive Vice President for the Oil Business Unit, PTT Public Company Limited, said that PTT pioneered the use of renewable energy in Thailand and continuously supports the development of environmentally conscious quality products. PTT has provided support by obtaining eight tons of aviation biofuels, valued at 2.5 million baht, which was imported from Sky NRG, a leading aviation biofuels agent in the Netherlands. Sky NRG also arranges aviation biofuels for KLM and Finnair for flights flown within Europe.
Biofuels have been tested by international airlines, including Air New Zealand, Continental Airlines, and KLM, which showed it has the same quality as Jet A-1 traditional petroleum-based fossil fuel. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM International) has certified that biofuels combined with Jet A-1 fuel, at a maximum ratio of 50:50, can be used in place of pure Jet A-1 fuel in accordance with the ASTM D7566 standard. In order that THAI’s special flight may be “Travel Green,” PTT MCC Biochem Co. Ltd. and PTT Polymer Marketing Co. Ltd. cooperated with plastic producers to manufacture laminated paper cups made from 100% recycled glass that will be introduced for the first time to the business sector in Thailand. This cooperation is an important step for the country to build global confidence and is a sign of readiness to become the “Bio hub of Asia,” complementing PTT’s vision and businesses in the energy sector while maintaining Corporate Social Responsibility for the long term.
Mr. Ralph L. “Skip” Boyce, President of Boeing Southeast Asia, Boeing International Corporation, said that this flight which is part of THAI’s “Sustainable Biofuels Development for Aviation Industry” project is an initiative that brings together different players in the industry; from aircraft to engine manufacturers, research companies, fuel producers, education institutions, government bodies, and the media. As an aircraft manufacturer, Boeing does more than just bring newer, more efficient products to its customers, such as the significantly more fuel efficient 787 which THAI will operate in the future. Working together with leading researchers and industries, Boeing is pioneering ways to develop biofuels and is committed to working with industry partners to find the means to a quieter, cleaner, and more cost effective flight experience for airline customers and their passengers.
Wing Commander Prajak Sajjasophon, Managing Director of Aeronautical Radio of Thailand Public Company Limited, said that AEROTHAI supports THAI’s biofuels efforts through air traffic control, flight operations plan and design, so that the first biofuels flight runs as smoothly and efficiently as possible. Best practices and expertise in aeronautical radio are implemented based AEROTHAI’s experience with the “THAI Aspire Flight” which was conducted as a “perfect flight” to reduce global warming. During that flight, the best technology, processes, new flight operations techniques, and carbon dioxide emissions reduction were used to reflect THAI’s “Travel Green” concept. The following special procedures are used for “THAI’s First Flight with Biofuels,” as follows:
1. Use of “surface optimization,” which is optimum ground handling at the airline that is implemented to decrease delays and reduce fuel waste during takeoff.
2. Use of “continuous climb,” which involves gradual and steady climb, instead of change of height level.
3. Flying “direct routes” or by flying a direct flight path that is within closest proximity.
4. Use of “continuous descent operation” (CDO), which is gradual descent at a regular pace while landing at the airport. This makes the flight more effective, modern, comfortable, energy efficient, and environmentally friendly.
Flight Lieutenant Anirut Thanombutr, Managing Director of Airports of Thailand Public Company Limited, said that Airports of Thailand (AOT) administers six primary airports in Thailand, with cares for the environment and society. With regards to reduction of carbon dioxide emissions the AOT has implemented “Green Buildings” in its passenger terminal building at Suvarnabhumi Airport, using natural light and energy originating from heated water transformed into electricity for cooling purposes. This effectively reduces the use of electricity. AOT plans to implement “green building” at other airports, such as Phuket International Airport. AOT has also put into action “Clean & Renewable Energy” whereby ground handling vehicles and airport shuttles are electrically powered to avoid air pollution. In addition, AOT uses “Hybrid Synergy Airport Limousines”. “Fixed Electrical Ground Power Supply” system is also used to reduce “Aircraft Auxiliary Unit” in the airport parking bay area, which normally releases a substantial amount of carbon dioxide emission. Furthermore, some stations use solar-powered energy to generate electricity for equipment and communication tools that is used to measure noise pollution.
THAI is cooperating with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in working towards reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 5% by the year 2020, and equivalent to zero carbon dioxide emissions by the year 2057. Currently, the aviation industry releases 2 percent of carbon dioxide in the world, which is not much when compared to other industries. However, if carbon dioxide emissions are not reduced by 5 percent per year, it will result in a carbon dioxide increase in the environment by 3 percent, or up to 20 million tons per year.
THAI is proud be the first airline in Asia to operate the commercial passenger domestic flight using biofuels, based on the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) strategy that focuses on “Travel Green”.

TCEB Highlights Progress in Bid Preparations to BIE General Assembly
Bangkok - The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (Public Organisation) or TCEB attended the BIE General Assembly to make the presentation for the second time on its latest progress on Thailand’s bid to host World Expo 2020.
The assembly, held in Paris from 21– 22 November, was attended by 158 BIE member countries. TCEB portrayed the unity and resolve of Thai people to jointly restore the ancient city of Ayutthaya, which has been proposed as the venue for this world-event. TCEB also proposed themes for side-events under the overall concept of “Redefine Globalisation: Balanced Life, Sustainable Living”, and highlighted progress in the awareness-building campaign for Thailand’s bid.
Mr Akapol Sorasuchart, TCEB President, stated that “This was Thailand’s second opportunity to join the BIE General Assembly to present progress in our bid to host World Expo 2020, and we were delighted with the warm reception. On the first occasion, we presented Thailand at the BIE General Assembly during 13-14 June 2011, highlighting the readiness of the country and the proposed host city, Ayutthaya, both in terms of the venue location, facilities, transport infrastructure, arts and culture, and the generous spirit of Thai people. We also introduced our proposed theme for the event: “Redefine Globalisation: Balanced Life, Sustainable Living”. At that time only Turkey and Thailand had expressed their intent to bid.
“This time, the list has grown to five countries: Thailand (Ayutthaya Province), Turkey (Izmir), Russia (Ekaterinburg); Brazil (Sao Paolo) and UAE (Dubai). Thailand highlighted progress made in developing the themes for the side-events. The four selected themes were as follows: ‘Revive Local Wisdom for Global Wellness’, ‘Reunite Connections for Seamlesss Harmony’; ‘Reinvent Creativity for All Living-Beings’ and ‘Reform Life’s Value for Utmost Happiness’. Should Thailand be selected to host the event, member countries will select and interpret these themes from their own country perspectives and present them in their respective national pavilions. These diverse portrayals will convey a unified message under the overall concept: ‘Redefine globalisation: balanced life, Sustainable living’” Mr Akapol added.
During the meeting, Thailand also updated the delegates on progress made in implementing its public awareness programme, including a national logo and mascot competition, and the ‘World Expo 2020: Believe in Thailand’ event, held in Bangkok recently. During this event, 100,000 signatures of Thai people were collected as a sign of support for Thailand’s bid to host World Expo 2020.
At BIE, the delegates were fascinated by a video presentation of the mascot for Thailand’s bid: ‘Nong Naree’, which represents a mythical creature in Thai literature. Overall, TCEB’s presentation successfully marked Thailand off from the other four competitors, especially in terms of venue location, venue facilities and infrastructure, and its diversity of tourism opportunities. Most important of all, the delegates saw a glimpse of the unity and inner strength of Thai people in overcoming the challenges they face today, and were touched by their sincerity and generosity in the face of adversity.
The official presentations aside, TCEB participated in an exhibition along with other candidate countries, distributing brochures summarising progress Thailand made to date, as well as a special 200-page publication covering the history of Thailand and its involvement in World Expo since 1942. Copies of the publication were given to all 158 country delegates as a valuable souvenir.
Also, TCEB hosted a ‘Thai Night’ for all delegates, featuring displays of traditional Thai art and culture, including garland-making, umbrella-painting, and fruit carving. Thailand’s Ambassador to France joined in welcoming delegates from around the world. A delegation from Thailand also took part in the event, comprising representatives from the Thai Embassy in Paris, Office of Commercial Affairs, and the Tourism Authority of Thailand.
The next milestone in Thailand’s bid preparation will be the launch of a World Expo 2020 Pavilion at the Board of Investment (BOI) Fair to be held at IMPACT Convention Center from 5-20 January 2012, under the theme “Redefining Globalisation- Balanced Life, Sustainable Living’. The 2,000m2 Pavilion will present an overview of Thailand and its involvement in the World Expo, and proposals to host the World Expo 2020 (Ayutthaya). Every evening throughout the BOI Fair, TCEB will host a ‘Night Show’ with dazzling special effects around the pavilion. TCEB anticipates over 107,000 visitors at the Pavilion during the 16-day event.
TCEB also invited Mr. Vicente González Loscertales, Secretary General of the International Exhibitions Bureau, who is responsible for the process of selecting the winning country to host the World Expo 2020, to visit Thailand from 15-18 January 2012. Mr Loscertales will deliver a special keynote address on 16 January on the topic “Innovation, Economic Impact and Investment Opportunities from the World Expo” to an audience of senior executives who will join the ‘CEO Forum’, including heads of the Board of Trade, and the Federation of Thai Industries, including members of the Thai Chambers of Commerce, and the Stock Exchange of Thailand. The lecture will be followed by an evening reception.
Concluding, Mr Akapol remarked that “our two opportunities to present progress to the BIE General Assembly in Paris, as well as Thailand’s planned activities in support of its bid to host the World Expo 2020 succeeded in differentiating Thailand in the eyes of the world, and ensured that Thailand was the centre of attention at the BIE event. TCEB will continue to work closely with all concerned to promote Ayutthaya as the host city for World Expo 2020, and I would like to thank everyone who has given such strong support to our campaign so far.”
IAPCO and TCEB Agreement to Support Southeast Asian Congress Organisers
The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) and the International Association of Professional Congress Organizers (IAPCO) are joining hands to provide professional development training for congress organizers in the Southeast Asian Region.
In a ceremony to announce the signing of a Letter of Intent to provide and host regional seminars from 2013 to 2015, the two organizations disclosed details of the regional training programme.
Mr Akapol Sorasuchart, TCEB President, announced, “As a government agency dedicated to supporting the events industry, TCEB is keenly aware of the importance of regional co-operation to boost professional standards within the industry. We expect the forthcoming economic integration within ASEAN in 2015 to drive a major expansion of the events industry in Southeast Asia, and it is therefore crucial to ensure that we start now to develop world-class expertise within the region in order to meet global industry standards.”
“We are therefore greatly honoured to have this opportunity to partner with IAPCO, whose world-renowned expertise and leadership in education can now help to develop the potential of conference organizers across the Southeast Asian region- in Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. IAPCO is the universally accepted benchmark for quality within congress organisation and is the global brand of excellence for the meetings industry. Commenting on the new partnership, Mr. Philippe Fournier, President of IAPCO, said, “IAPCO is committed to raising standards of service among its members and other sectors of the meetings industry by means of continuing education and interaction with other professionals. Thai MICE to bounce back from floods before Q3/2012
TCEB launches ‘Believe in Thailand – Thailand: Destination of “CHOICES” at EIBTM 2011, Europe’s largest meeting trade show
Barcelona, 29 November 2011: Thailand is already beginning to recover from the recent floods that have impacted the country’s MICE industry. In order to ensure a strong and speedy recovery, the government is working closely with the private sector in implementing a cleanup plan, and aims to regain international confidence through TCEB’s market promotion campaign Believe in Thailand – Thailand: Destination of “CHOICES”. These measures are expected to see Thailand back on track before the third quarter of 2012.
Commenting on the impact of the flood situation on the MICE industry, Mr. Akapol Sorasuchart, President of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) explained that “Overall, 24 MICE events have beenaffected, with revenue losses estimated at Baht 3.32 billion Baht (Euro79 million) and MICE visitors down by over 250,000.
“However, Suvarnabhumi International Airport, the main gateway to Thailand, serving 120 international and domestic airlines, has considerable flood protection measures in place. The airport has operated on schedule throughout, handling 800 flights per day, including all connecting flights to tourist destinations throughout Thailand such as Phuket, Chiang Mai and Suratthani.”
Continuing, Mr. Akapol added that “It’s important to note that many scheduled events have been completely unaffected, for example the Asia Pacific Golf Summit 2011 (Pattaya, 31 October – 6 November), the Nokia Incentive Group (Pattaya, 13 November – 9 December), the Amway Group (Chiang Mai, 10–26 November), and the Daikin Group (Bangkok, 22-24 November). Looking forward to 2012, large-scale incentive events such as Amway China (15 April – 15 May 2012 – 15,000 visitors). All of these will go ahead as scheduled. In terms of convention events, the 2012 Rotary International Convention with around 30,000 visitors is also confirmed to be held during 6-9 May 2012.”
In regard to the industry’s recovery from the impact of the floods, Mr. Akapol commented, “We expect to see a strong and rapid recovery for Thailand’s MICE sector. TCEB is working closely with other government agencies in the ‘Team Thailand’ and also with the private sector itself to implement remedial measures. We have together agreed on measures to be implemented in three main phases from now until March 2012. Immediate short-term measures will focus on setting up a one-stop-centre to assist MICE travellers and facilitate provision of daily updates and factsheets to the industry and all stakeholders. In the medium term, TCEB will launch confidence-boosting activities through the Believe in Thailand – Thailand: Destination of “CHOICES” market promotion campaign. TCEB will also invite national leaders to join key events and issue statements personally or through video. We also have arranged to inject additional funds to promote MICE events, enhance market promotion and give financial support for events that have not been cancelled or postponed.
For the longer term, we have proposed for government consideration a Recovery Plan to stimulate both the international and domestic MICE market. This includes a proposal to give 300% tax relief on MICE expenditures, provide regular updates on progress on MICE industry’s recovery, and cooperation with the Federation of Thai Industries to provide counseling and encourage domestic tourism among those affected by the floods.
“Despite the challenges facing us, TCEB believes in the principle of ‘Together we fight for Thailand’ -that through close collaboration between the government and private sector, Thailand’s MICE sector will recover completely before Q3/2012. The second phase of TCEB’s Believe in Thailand: Thailand Destination of “CHOICES”– No matter which path you choose, success is sure to follow.” marketing communication campaign will be a cornerstone of this recovery process.
“This theme perfectly reflects the multitude of choices, options and settings that together make Thailand a unique and perfect location for your next business event. Our goal is to ensure that every experience is unique, with more choices now and the most choices for the future. Thailand’s MICE and travel operators work to world-class standards, and will give your event the special, personalized service it requires because the diversity of options available allows you to personally design each event to maximize your success.” Mr. Akapol explained.
Commenting on Europe’s MICE market, Mr. Akapol said “Europe’s MICE market has been affected by internal and external factors, particularly the debt crisis. For the MICE industry, projections for 2011 have been revised downwards from 100,800 to 90,000 European visitors to Thailand by year-end, in light of the situations in both Europe and Thailand.
“From 22 November to 1 December 2011, TCEB will launch a marketing campaign to boost European confidence in Thailand. For example, we will highlight the major progress in preparatin of Thailand’s bid to host the World Expo 2020 through our participation at the BIE general assembly, and also during our UK Roadshow on 25 December and at EIBTM 2011 on 29 November – 1 December.
“We are confident that the Believe in Thailand will help drive the MICE sector’s recovery. TCEB expects that in 2012 the number of global business travellers to Thailand will increase by approximately 5 percent to 750,000 visitors, with revenues of Euro 1.43 billion. Meanwhile over 102,000 visitors from Europe will come to Thailand”, Mr. Akapol concluded.
Choice of Destinations Helps Thailand’s MICE Sector Mitigate Floods Impact
Bangkok: November 2011 – Thailand’s meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions business is still operating actively in Phuket, Pattaya, Chiang Mai and other destinations around Thailand which are popular with international business travellers, despite the floods affecting parts of Bangkok and surrounding provinces in the country’s central region.
Events including the Asia Pacific Gulf Summit 2011, held in Pattaya from Oct 31-Nov 6, the Nokia group, held in Pattaya from Nov 13 – Dec 9, the Amway group, held in Chiang Mai from Nov 10 – Nov 26, and the Daikin group, held in Bangkok from Nov 22- Nov 24 etc., went on unaffected. Most of Thailand’s international airports are still operating normally, including Suvarnabhumi Airport, Bangkok’s main international gateway, located East of Bangkok on the way to Pattaya, and those operating in the country’s South (Phuket, Hat Yai and Samui) and North (Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai).
“The variety of destinations Thailand has to offer helps mitigate the impact of the floods affecting the Bangkok area,” said Mr. Akapol Sorasuchart, the President of Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB). “Also, thanks to steps we are taking with the cooperation from the industry, we expect that Thailand’s MICE business will remain stable for the entire fiscal 2012 as most events affected by the situation have been rescheduled to next quarter.”
In the fiscal year 2011, which ended 30th September, Thailand’s meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions sector attracted 720,000 business travellers and generated 57.6 billion baht (US$1.85 billion) in revenue, compared respectively to 679,585 travellers and 55 billion baht in fiscal 2010.
The floods currently affecting Bangkok and some other central provinces along the Chao Phraya River are the worst to hit the country in over 50 years. Overall, 14 MICE events, mostly tradeshows planned to be held in and around Bangkok this quarter, were affected with revenue losses estimated at 2.98 billion baht and a MICE visitors shortfall estimated at 96,000. The impact of the floods on domestic transportation in the Bangkok area has led organisers to reschedule events due to concerns over participant numbers.
One airport, Don Mueang, located in the northern area of the capital and mostly used for domestic flights is closed since last week due to the floods. Operations were temporarily relocated to Suvarnabhumi Airport.
As part of its immediate and medium-term action plans to mitigate the crisis, and in line with its ‘Believe in Thailand’ campaign, TCEB will provide updated information to all MICE industry stakeholders, as well as marketing support and technical assistance in various areas for events that have been rescheduled, especially large-scale events such as the International Horticultural Exposition Ratchaphruek 2011 (Nov 2011 – Feb 2012); the Lanna 750 Years, Chiang Rai (Jan 2012) and the BOI Fair (Jan 2012).
Pattaya Shines as ‘Destination of Choices’ for 2011 APGS
Pattaya, Thailand – Thailand’s coastal resort city of Pattaya has been transformed into Asia’s “golf hub” as golfing dignitaries and decision makers from around the world – including course and resort owners, managers, architects, designers and developers, officials, and players – gather at this vibrant tourist destination for the week-long 2011 Asia Pacific Golf Summit.
Mr. Akapol Sorasuchart, President of Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (Public Organization) or TCEB, commented: “Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (Public Organization) or TCEB is delighted to support the 2011 Asia Pacific Golf Summit under its ‘Believe in Thailand – Thailand: Destination of “CHOICES”’ campaign. The campaign theme reflects the multitude of choices, options and settings that together make Thailand a unique and perfect location for any business event. TCEB’s goal is to ensure that every experience is unique, with more choices now and the most choices for the future.”
Golf superstars including Tony Jacklin, Peter McEvoy, and also the Tennis superstar, Jimmy Corner are among a star-studded cast of international speakers and panelists who have confirmed their attendance; well over 500 delegates participates in the 2011 Asia Pacific Golf Summit that tees off on 31 October.
The Summit incorporates several major golfing business events, including the 2011 Golf Course Superintendents of Asia Summit (GCSAS 2011) the PGA Conference of Asia, the South East Asia & India Golf Merchandise Exhibition (SEAIGME), as well as the Inaugural ASEAN Golf Tourism Forum. This is the second consecutive year that the Asia Pacific Golf Group has held its events in Thailand.
While last year’s event was held in Bangkok, the 2011 APGS is staged in the vibrant resort city of Pattaya, at the plush Royal Cliffs Hotels Group and its world-class Pattaya Exhibition and Convention Hall (PEACH). With its dedicated convention venues, wide choice of accommodation and diverse leisure opportunities, Pattaya is perfectly geared as the ideal ‘MICE City’ to host any international business meeting, convention or exhibition. The 2011 Asia Pacific Golf Summit augurs well for Thailand’s aim to be recognized as a major golf hub in Asia.
In conclusion, Mr. Akapol added: “Thailand’s convention and exhibition industry works to world-class standards, and commits to a personalized professional service, tailoring each individual event to maximize success. With a wide diversity of options and dedicated venues, countless business opportunities, and an unsurpassed reputation for hospitality, it is no surprise that Thailand is the ideal choice for international business events, large or small.”
The current flood situation in the vicinity of Bangkok has had no impact on the 2011 Asia Pacific Golf Summit and other convention events hosted in Pattaya, as the city and Bangkok’s International Airport are located well away from impacted areas.
The Asia Pacific Golf Summit takes place at The Royal Cliff Beach Resort, Pattaya, Thailand from 31 October to 6 November. It will run concurrently with the 2011 Golf Course Superintendents of Asia Summit and will be followed by 2011 PGA Conference of Asia and 2011 South East Asia & India Golf Merchandise Exposition.
PATA: No Need to Change Thailand Travel Plans Due to Floods
October 18, 2011, Bangkok: The Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) says there is no need for travel agents and tourists to change Thailand travel plans due to flooding to the north of Bangkok.
PATA head office is located in Bangkok city centre which is operating normally.
PATA Interim CEO Bill Calderwood said today: “As you are aware from TV and media reports, some parts of Thailand are experiencing much heavier than usual seasonal flooding. However, central Bangkok and the majority of its suburban areas are functioning normally. All of Thailand’s airports are operating normally, including Suvarnabhumi International Airport in Bangkok. There has been no disruption to BTS “skytrain”, the MRT “underground” and public transport systems in Bangkok. All Bangkok hotels and major tourism attractions are also operating normally.”
PATA says that the flood affected areas are to the provinces to the immediate north of Bangkok. Tourism and transport activities in those areas have been heavily affected and tour operators are modifying programmes that visit or have to pass through those provinces.
Calderwood said that travellers and travel industry professionals concerned about the Thai flood situation should get updated information on www.thailandtourismupdate.com. “The site has excellent information on the flood situation including contact numbers, transport updates, maps, news reports, tourist testimonials and more. I strongly recommend it as a useful resource.”
PATA’s Strategic Intelligence Centre said that as of October 18 it is likely that central Bangkok will avoid serious impact by the floods and that there is no need for travellers to change their Thailand travel plans. However, everyone should keep up to date with the latest news developments on the floods.
PATA said it is in contact with the relevant Thai authorities and is monitoring conditions. Calderwood said: “We will update PATA members if there is any substantial change to the situation.”

The strong performances of Thailand’s professionalism and destinations are no surprise. Thailand continues to offer the multitude of choices and the unique and perfect locations for all kinds of business events. With more choices now, Thailand is the Asia’s leading business events destination. But, with the most choices for the future, Thailand commit itself to serving as one of the world’s most preferred MICE destinations.
Building upon such commitment, Thailand has recently unveiled the 2nd phase of its ‘Believe in Thailand’ campaign. A new emphasis is reflected in the campaign’s new theme: ‘Thailand: Destination of CHOICES – No matter which path you choose, success is sure to follow.’
“The theme is very appropriate. TCEB has categorised the MICE industry into 3 segments: Meetings, Trade Shows and International Events. No matter which path you choose, TCEB will assist you towards your business success step by step. With our ‘Believe in Thailand’ campaign, we will ensure that all kinds of business events soar to even greater heights.”

TCEB kicks off “Thailand: Destination of “CHOICES”
No matter which path you choose, success is sure to follow….at IMEX America
Las Vegas, NV: October 11, 2011:At IMEX America this week, the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) will launch Phase 2 of its “Believe in Thailand” campaign. A new emphasis is reflected in the campaign’s theme: “Thailand…Destination of “CHOICES” — No matter which path you choose, success is sure to follow.”
TCEB’s President Akapol Sorasuchart explained, “The theme perfectly reflects the multitude of choices, options and settings that together make Thailand a unique and perfect location for your next business event. Our goal is to ensure that every experience is unique, with more choices now and the most choices for the future. Thailand’s MICE and travel operators work to world-class standards, and will give your event the special, personalized service it requires because the diversity of options available allows you to personally design each event to maximize your success.”
Commenting on the status of Thailand’s own MICE industry, Sorasuchart said, “This year, Thailand is expected to welcome almost 720,000 MICE visitors, who will participate in meetings and incentives, conventions, exhibitions and trade fairs, generating expected revenues of US$1.9 (Bht 57.6 billion). Additionally, our recently announced MICE policy and roadmap projects global MICE travelers to Thailand to increase by more than 75 percent from 2012 to 2016, with revenues up by more than 87 percent by the year 2016.
“Thailand’s MICE industry is also projected to play an increasingly important role in the country’s overall economy. Today the MICE industry represents only 9.13 percent of total tourism revenues for 2011, but this share is expected to rise to 18.35 percent by 2016, with revenues of US$ 4.36 billion (Bht 130.92 billion),” Sorasuchart added.
In 2011, Thailand expects to welcome 23 percent more business from the Americas, with MICE visitor numbers rising from 42,102 last year to a projected 51,904 by year-end, generating revenues of US$ 107.8 million. For Thailand, the Americas have huge market potential, and there is considerable upside potential for these figures to grow further in the coming years.
Regarding the role of TCEB, Sorasuchart said, “TCEB is a government agency mandated to support the development of Thailand’s business event, or MICE, industry. We work closely with the private sector — the tourism and hotel industry, as well as the convention and trade fair industry — to identify how we may best target our support for private sector development. TCEB provides financial and non-financial assistance to Thailand-based MICE operators in market promotion, bid preparation and strategic advice. But we also have some exciting support packages specifically tailored to the needs of overseas MICE operators, professional bodies and societies that want to bring their business events to Thailand. I therefore encourage U.S. event organizers to contact us to find out how TCEB can help organize a superlative, memorable and cost-effective event in Thailand.
“The theme of the second phase of TCEB’s ‘Believe in Thailand’ campaign, and its emphasis on choices, is very appropriate. TCEB has categorized the MICE industry into three segments: meetings, trade shows and international events. No matter which path you choose, TCEB will assist you toward your business success step by step. Believe in Thailand to ensure that your next business event soars to even greater heights. Thailand’s reputation for hospitality is unsurpassed and when combined with professional services, world-class infrastructure and facilities, varities of meeting destinations and countless business opportunities, it will come as no surprise that you will want to return, time and again,” Sorasuchart said.
Sorasuchart also noted the significant progress in Thailand’s bid to host the World Expo 2020. “TCEB is also playing a central role in coordinating Thailand’s bid to host this mega-event in Thailand’s ancient capital of Ayuthaya. Our preparations are well underway, and we have already conducted a series of events to build public awareness, support and unity among Thai people from all walks of life in supporting our bid,” he said.
Concluding, Sorasuchart offered his perspective on the enormous opportunity represented by the forthcoming formation of the ASEAN Economic Community, or AEC in 2015. “The projected value of trade in AEC, at US$6.4 trillion, will represent a quarter of total global trade, translating into countless business opportunities through closer economic cooperation within the region. From now on, when we talk about Thailand, we also speak as a representative of the AEC because Thailand serves as the natural gateway to the ASEAN countries. With modern infrastructure and facilities including six international airports, as well as the upcoming high speed rail network through Thailand which will include the Kunming – Singapore rail link, Thailand really is at the crossroads of ASEAN. Travelling around the country is fast and convenient, allowing a wide range of choices and great flexibility for business events. The AEC market holds enormous promise as well as challenges for Thailand, and will fuel strong economic growth and a flourishing MICE industry in the region.

We have worked very closely with the private sector- the tourism and hotel industry, as well as the convention and trade fair industry, to identify the key constraints to the sector’s growth, and how we may best target our support for private sector development. TCEB provides financial and non-financial assistance to Thailand-based MICE operators in market promotion, bid preparation and strategic advice. But we also have some exciting support packages specifically tailored to the needs of overseas MICE operators, professional bodies and societies who want to bring their business events to Thailand. “Our recently announced MICE policy and 5-year roadmap projects global MICE travelers to Thailand to increase by more than 75% from 2012 to 2016, with revenues up by more than 87% by the year 2016. We therefore believe the AEC market holds enormous promise as well as challenges, and will fuel strong economic growth and a flourishing MICE industry in the region.

THAI’s Royal Orchid Plus Celebrates 17th Anniversary
Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI) ceremoniously opens the “Royal Orchid Plus Celebration Day” to celebrate its 17th year in the frequent flyer venture.
Mr. Piyasvasti Amranand, THAI President, said that THAI’s Royal Orchid Plus program (ROP) was part of the marketing strategy for the retention of loyal passengers, through Gold, Silver, and Standard membership levels. ROP members can accumulate miles on any Star Alliance member carriers, at selected hotel stays within Thailand and abroad, with car rentals, and through selected credit card companies.
The accumulated miles can be redeemed for air tickets, seat upgrades on THAI or Star Alliance carriers, hotel stays, as well as souvenirs from THAI Shop and THAI Catering. Other benefits include priority seat reservations, priority check-in, additional baggage allowance, priority boarding, priority baggage handling, and worldwide departure lounge access.
To reward Royal Orchid Plus members during this 17th anniversary celebration fair, THAI is offering a 50% savings when redeeming two international Award Tickets on THAI from member’s account. All travel must be completed by 31 October 2010.
THAI Smile Air Takes Flight in July 2012
Thai Airways International Public Company Limited (THAI) will have a light-premium sub-brand, THAI Smile Air, scheduled to begin its first flights in July 2012.
Responding to the high demand for more price-sensitive segment in short sectors, THAI is launching a “light premium” sub-brand that will service both domestic and international destinations.
“Think of it as a competitive hybrid between premium THAI flights and ultra cheap, low-cost airlines like Air Asia and Tiger Airways,” said Woranate Laprabang, Managing Director of THAI Smile Air.
In its first year of operations, using Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport as its main hub, THAI will introduce the sub-brand THAI Smile Air to replace the main brand in Ubon Ratchathani, Udon Thani, Khon Kaen, Chiang Rai, and Surat Thani.
The main target market for these initial in-country flights will be the young small and medium business traveler as well as local traveler, government agents, who wants a relaxed, stylish atmosphere on board without the premium price.
THAI Smile Air light premium service will offer a complimentary meal and drink service, free passenger seat selections, faster check-in procedures, 15-20 kg baggage allowances, and the ability to accrue frequent flyer mileage on both THAI and the Star Alliance network.
Just like THAI, which was rated in 2011 as the world’s 5 th best airline by Skytrax Surveys, “our new sub-brand promises to give passengers high value for a good price,” Woranate said.
By 2013, THAI Smile Air’s fleet of 11 brand new lean 174-seat Airbus A320 planes are expected to fly to neighboring countries—India, China, and most ASEAN member states of Southeast Asia—thereby making these regional destinations that much more accessible, with relative comfort and ease.
Recruitment drives for a new cabin crew, scheduled for January 2012, will target young, active, and energetic girls with high level of service minded, who are willing to undergo an intensive three-month training program at the newly built THAI Flight Training Academy. Here they will learn skills in client service, in-flight safety, and language etiquette. Special attention will be given to ensure that all flight staff is adept at providing passengers with the “human touch,” including, of course, the traditional Thai smile.
Innovative design plans are already underway for the aircraft logo, flight staff uniforms, and flight cabins.
Managing Director Woranate is confident that in-house competition with low-cost subsidiary Nok Air is not really an issue since Nok Air only flies domestically out of Don Muang airport, while THAI Smile Air passengers will be able to connect to international flights out of Suvarnabhumi Airport. Also, THAI Smile Air will fly to Khon Kaen and Chiang Rai, two destinations not covered by Nok Air.
Promotional campaigns will appear in early 2012 on many Internet sites, including Facebook, as well as on mobile phone, making it much easier to make flight reservations with a click on the latest tech gadget.
Interested passengers should also keep a lookout for membership cards and discount coupons, also coming in early 2012, as the lift-off for this exciting new addition to the THAI gets closer to its inauguration flights in July 2012.
TCEB follows 5-year strategic plan, launching “The Next Best Shows” to boost trade fair industry
The campaign aims to help boost Thai trade shows and reinforce Thailand’s position as the exhibition city in ASEAN to gear up for the AEC
Bangkok: 22 September 2011 – Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) has introduced “The Next Best Shows”, a marketing campaign being implemented under the Bureau’s 5-year strategic plan to drive thegrowth of Thailand’s MICE industry in the long run. With the intention to raise the standard of trade shows in the country, the Next Best Shows aims to achieve an increase of 50-60 % of overseas visitors and generate revenues of 14,000 million baht when the campaign wraps up in 2014.
Mr. Akapol Sorasuchart, President of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau, said, “The Next Best Shows is one of the projects under TCEB’s 5-years strategic plan to develop and grow the country’s MICE industry. It is a strategic step to prepare the domestic trade shows industry to fully support the integration of the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) in 2015. The success of AEC is likely to attract more investment in the MICE industry as well as boost productivity in the service and manufacturing sectors.”
The Next Best Shows aims to retain existing international trade fairs held in Thailand as well as to elevate the standards of fairs to become competitive at the ASEAN level. The project is 3 years long, beginning in August 2011 and running until September 2014.
To be eligible for benefits that the campaign provides, an applying trade fair must meet the following criteria: firstly, the event must have been held 3 times consecutively in Thailand and is committed to continue here for the next 3 editions. Secondly, the proportion of international trade fair exhibitors must be at least 10% of total exhibitors. Thirdly, foreign visitors should represent at least 5% of total visitors. Fourthly, at least 4,000 square-meters of exhibition space is required. Lastly, the trade fair must implement an international registration system in accordance with UFI’s instructions.
TCEB has a budget of 85 million baht to support this 3-year project by subsidized trade fairs which meet required criteria. Also, those qualified trade fairs will be entitled to a matching fund for 50% of the total marketing spending in “ASEAN+6” countries or during the period the trade show is held.
“We hope that the full support from TCEB through the campaign will encourage a competitive environment and further development in Thailand’s exhibition industry at the regional level. Each year, we will also award the trade fairs that are outstanding in 5 aspects including an increase of international visitors, an increase of international exhibitors, an increase of international pavilions, an increase of nationality as well as an increase of net commercial space,” Mr. Akapol added.
The success of this project will help reinforce Thailand’s leadership in the ASEAN exhibition industry as well as strengthen the efforts of the “Believe in Thailand” campaign that reiterates Thailand’s readiness as a hub of international trade fairs in ASEAN in terms of modern infrastructure and transportation system, world-class meeting and event facilities, wide variety of accommodations and five-stars hotels, high-standard and professional services, value for money and business opportunity through its position as a gateway to ASEAN.
This year, there are 20 trade fairs participating in The Next Best Shows campaign which all have potential to grow into regional-scale shows, for example, InCosmetics, Intermold, Interplas and Nepcon which are international trade fairs under the group of Manufacturing Expo, Wire & Tube Asia, Intermach, TFBO&TRAFS and Food & Hotel Thailand. All of the participating trade fairs represent key industries according to the national agenda e.g. subcontracting industry, SMEs, Agriculture and Food industry as well as industrial machinery industry etc.
“After the end of campaign in 2014, The Next Best Shows is expected to help increase the number of visitors by 50-60% and generate revenues of 14,000 million Baht for Thailand’s MICE industry. It will play an important part in driving the 5-year MICE industry development plan. In 2016, the prospective growth rate of MICE visitors is set at 75% while the revenue is expected to increase by 87%. For this year, we target to see 720,000 MICE visitors with the total revenue generated at 56 billion baht,” Mr. Akapol concluded.
According to “The Trade Fair Industry of Asia 7th Edition, 2011” reported by The Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI), Thailand’s exhibition industry is still holding the leadership position in ASEAN with 71 international trade fairs identified. The revenues from net space sold in Thailand reaches around 3.99 billion Baht, which is the highest in ASEAN and ranked 7th in Asia. Thailand’s exhibition industry is also ranked the first in ASEAN in terms of the estimated annual size of 432,500 square meters and the total number of international exhibition centers with 8 centers with total gross indoor size of 212,405 square meters. Thus, Thailand is considered a high potential market in ASEAN for international trade fairs and is likely to become the leader in Asia in the future.
Organisers Promise Best IT&CMA and CTW In Its 10 Year Run In Thailand
Event Outperforms On All Fronts Including Exhibitor Investment and Quality of Buyer Profiles
Bangkok, 12 September 2011 – IT&CMA and CTW will have much to celebrate as this international business event commemorates its 10th year in Thailand. This 2011, Asia’s Only Doublebill Event In MICE and Corporate Travel will present an exceptionally strong exhibitor showcase, new and innovative sponsored activities to engage delegates and an enviable buyer profile that includes some of the industry’s mega buying houses.
Exhibitors Choose To Invest At IT&CMA and CTW 2011
-
Up and coming MICE destinations Cambodia and Vietnam have chosen IT&CMA and CTW as their debut business platform to the MICE and Corporate Travel industry. With the objective of promoting and increasing awareness of their capabilities as a MICE Destination, Ministry of Tourism, Cambodia and Vietnam MICE Club are making a powerful inaugural statement with a 36sqm and 48sqm booth respectively. This achievement also represents the event’s first major break-through in the Indochina region.
-
Returning exhibitors are making larger investments in IT&CMA and CTW as evidenced through the increase in booth sizes. Pattaya MICE City has more than tripled their exhibition space from 18sqm to a whopping 60sqm. Sri Lanka Convention City has also increased their space from 18sqm to 24sqm.
-
National States such as Hyderabad CVB and Seoul & Sabah, have emerged from their country pavilions to participate as individual entities. This is due to the event’s growing reputation, consistent delivery of ROI and strong industry confidence.
-
In total, IT&CMA and CTW will see a 10% leap to some 335 exhibiting companies this year, closely matching its previous high in 2009.
Said Mr Darren Ng, Managing Director of TTG Asia Media – event organiser of IT&CMA and CTW, “Despite the good showing in terms of exhibitor numbers, the show is looking to re-emphasize its ability to deliver a quality exhibition showcase of international MICE and Corporate Travel suppliers. We want to position IT&CMA and CTW as a powerful international platform for suppliers around the world to achieve their diverse business objectives.”
New and Innovative Activities To Engage MICE & Corporate Travel Delegates, Is A Hit With Sponsors
-
Busan is sponsoring a 108sqm the event’s first-ever Hosted Delegate Lounge. Located on the exhibition floor, this lounge will be the perfect way for hosted buyers (MICE and Corporate Travel Managers) and media to catch up on business without having to miss the other goings-on at the event.
-
Another first at IT&CMA and CTW is Intercontinental Hotels and Resorts’ Roving Polaroid Pictures to allow delegates to capture memories of the event, as they happen.
This slew of new sponsorship ideas has created fresh and exciting opportunities for exhibitors to enhance their presence at IT&CMA and CTW, while value-adding to delegates’ experience at the event. Meanwhile, sponsorship of delegate bags, escalator wraps, tee-shirts, lanyards and badges has been snapped up by long time partner, Thailand Convention and Exhibitions Board (TCEB), while Meetings and Exhibitions Hong Kong will be engaging delegates with an informal sun-downer at the end of the business day.
Improved Buyer Validation and Acquisition Process Results In Quality MICE & Corporate Travel Buyers With Spending Power
-
Exhibitors looking for buyers with deep pockets will be satisfied to meet representatives from organisations with annual budgets for Asia rangingfrom USD 250,000 to USD 2,000,000. This includes Stella Travel Services – Australia, Web Applications Society @WAS-Austria, China International Travel Agency (CITS) – Shanghai, Centre Formation ESKA – France, Next Generation Ltd – Greece, Delta Travel Group – Hungary, International League Against Epilepsy – Ireland, PRM Events/ PRM Brokers Limited – United Kingdom, and many more.
-
This 2011, the event will also welcome first-time MICE buyers from eight new countries: Argentina, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Denmark, Latvia, Lebanon, Macedonia and Saudi Arabia; all with a keen interest in buying into Asia.
-
The specially formed TTG Advisory Committee’s concentrated efforts to increase participation from Corporate Travel Managers this year continues to yield results. Along with a record 125 Corporate Travel Managers to date, the show will see representation from three new countries: Taiwan, Italy and United Kingdom.
-
Quality of Corporate Travel Manager profiles continue to remain high with the largest contingent of travel managers belong to leading MNCs in the Engineering, Energy, Petroleum, Chemicals and Manufacturing industries.
-
Meanwhile, Corporate Travel demand from China, Thailand and United States have surged with travel managers from these territories almost tripling this year.
Some 120 international and local Thai media will be providing international coverage to IT&CMA and CTW 2011. Thanks to the support of its four TTG Official Media and 28 international Media Affiliates, the event has already received considerable global exposure in the run up to the event.
BATTLE OF THE BRANDS AS KOH SAMUI GOES GLOBAL
An influx of international hotel chains to the third largest island in Thailand – Koh Samui – is setting the stage for fierce brand competition.Well-known names in the pipeline include InterContinental, Le Méridien, Conrad, Accor and Moevenpick who will all be intent on luring travellers to the destination by the end of 2011.
According to new data released by leading consulting firm C9 Hotelworks in its Samui Hotel Market Update report, five hotels managed by global operators will enter the existing supply side during the second half of this year. The destination has already experienced a surge in luxury brand penetration with properties operated by Four Seasons, Starwood’s W, Banyan Tree, Six Senses and Orient Express.
Managing Director of C9 Hotelworks, Bill Barnett, said the influx of new hotels and resorts is a dynamic performance indicator.
“Leading hospitality brands have been proven to induce demand into a destination and are a strong catalyst for sustainable growth,” Mr Barnett said.
“A key comparative is luxury retail where upscale shopping malls rely on anchor brands to attract upscale shoppers. Travel and retail track a strikingly similar customer driven model.”
The report also shows the island made inroads in the first half of the year, with hotels hitting an overall occupancy of 62%. This could signal that the island is getting back to business.
Airlift continues to be a primary focus as the increasing popularity of the monthly Full Moon Party on nearby Koh Phangan is drawing worldwide attention and is displacing seat capacity required for expansion of the mainstream leisure segment.
The recent media comments by Bangkok Airways founder Prasert Prasarttong-osoth that the airline was studying the possibility of divesting a 30% stake and possibly going into an IPO could pave the way for change on Koh Samui.
A much touted market liberalisation under the Asean Economic Community in the next four years and open skies policy in the region are being hailed by travel industry watchers as a positive move.

THAILAND TO HOST 2011 THAILAND BARTENDER CHAMPIONSHIP AND ASEAN BARTENDER CHAMPIONSHIP FINALS
Bangkok — Thailand will be hosting two bartender championships in September 2011 – the Thailand Bartender Championship 2011 organized by the Thai Hotels Association (THA) on 15 September followed by the ASEAN Bartender Finals for 2011 on 16 September. Both events will be held at the Royal Paragon Hall Exhibition and Convention Centre on the fifth floor of Siam Paragon in Bangkok.
The ASEAN Bartender Finals for 2011 is being hosted in Thailand with the support and involvement of the ASEAN Hotel & Restaurant Association. In addition to raising industry standards and levels of professionalism, the event brings together industry professionals from around the ASEAN region and provides a valuable forum for networking, exchange of ideas and sharing of expert knowledge.
“By hosting the annual Thailand Bartender Championship along with the finals for the 2011 8th ASEAN Bartender Championships, we present a rare opportunity for contestants to meet new contacts, network with their regional counterparts, and forge new friendships,” says Mr Prakit Chinamourphong, President of the Thai Hotels Association (THA), outlining the importance of the bartender championships in the local, regional and international contexts. Active exchange promotes a new level of creativity and spurs innovation in the design and creation of exciting new recipes for cocktail mixes – ones that are a feast for the eyes as much as they are pleasing to the palate – and fun for those who take pleasure in them.
“The championships are also important events because they promote a healthy spirit of competition as well as collaboration, and this helps raise the bar on industry standards overall,” says Mr Prakit. They also encourage the adoption of responsible and ethical practices. Furthermore, the recognition granted creates pride in the bartending profession which in itself is an important aspect of the F&B and hospitality industries.
“The promotion of such activities is one way in which professional trade associations such as, the Thai Hotels Association, Thai Federation of F&B Management Clubs & Associations, and our ASEAN counterpart – the ASEAN Hotel & Restaurant Association – ensure that our members achieve a high level of readiness and are well-prepared for the launch of the ASEAN Economic Community in 2015,” says Mr Prakit.
Both the Thailand Bartender Championship 2011 and the ASEAN Bartender Finals for 2011 have attracted considerable interest and support in cash and kind from both the state and private sectors. Key supporters of both events include the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the ASEAN Hotel & Restaurant Association, Thai Air Asia, Diageo Moët Hennessy (Thailand), and Bangkok Exhibition Services (BES) – organizer of Food & Hotel Thailand 2011, a leading event for Thailand’s F&B and hospitality industries.
The Thailand Bartender Championship 2011 and the ASEAN Bartender Finals for 2011 have both been incorporated into the official programme of the 19th edition of Food & Hotel Thailand 2011 (FHT2011), a dedicated event for the hospitality industry organized by BES.
Billed as “Asia’s 5-Star Hospitality Event”, the 12,000-square-metre trade event is designed to fulfil the needs of Thailand’s growing hospitality industry and food service sector which includes over 100,000 restaurants and 5,000 hotels and resorts.
According to BES, more than 750 companies from around the world are expected to participate. These include pavilions from Japan, New Zealand, Poland, South Africa and the US. It is expected to attract more than 27,000 trade visitors from more than 60 countries. Over 89 per cent out of last year’s visitors (26,037 from 62 countries) have already confirmed their attendance.
“The Tourism Authority of Thailand has been a steadfast supporter of the Thai Hotels Association and Thai Federation of F&B Management Clubs & Associations in the organization of activities and events that help to establish new and higher benchmarks for the industry,” says Mr Suraphon Svetasreni, Governor of TAT. He notes that TAT has been a firm supporter of bartender championships in conjunction with F&B industry events through the years.
“We recognize the importance of promoting higher levels of professionalism and industry standards and strengthening the capabilities of all individuals working in the Thai tourism and hospitality industries,” says the TAT Governor. “This ensures that Thailand’s tourism industry remains highly competitive regionally and internationally. It strengthens the Thailand brand and establishes a positive perception of the destination among international visitors.”
Diageo Moët Hennessy (Thailand) Ltd., the leading importer and distributor of wines and spirits in Thailand, is a staunch supporter of bartender competitions in Thailand as well as around the ASEAN region and will be providing the alcohol for both contests.
Thai Air Asia will be sponsoring air travel for all contestants from ASEAN member countries as well as from around Thailand. Thai Air Asia is also sponsoring two return trip tickets for travel within ASEAN to be presented to the overall winner of the 8th ASEAN Bartender Championships.
True Vision (Plc), Thailand’s leading cable satellite television operator owned by True Corporation, is covering both events. Special segments featuring the bartender championships are to be aired on Travel Channel/Home and Food, TNN, TAN and True Inside.
The Thai Federation of F&B Management Clubs & Associations is responsible for staffing, coordination and logistical support.
According to Mr Boonrawd Bosereewong, THA Chairman of Special Activities, the Thailand Bartender Championship 2011 will feature two contest categories – Classic and Flair. The winner of the 2011 Thailand Bartender Championship finals will go on to compete in the ASEAN Bartender Finals for 2011.
Winners in the ASEAN Bartender Finals for 2011 will receive the following:

| Thai Chefs Competition | |
| Hospitality and Retail Technology Asia, an exhibition showcasing the total IT solutions for the region’s fast-expanding hotel, retail and restaurant sectors. |
Business Events: The Next Step of MICE in Thailand
ICCA CEO Joins TCEB Meetings Industry Forum
Bangkok, 25th August 2011: The Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) will hail new era in the Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions (MICE) industry on Friday 2nd September 2011. The TCEB-sponsored Meetings Industry Forum will be attended by Mr. Martin Sirk, CEO of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA);Mr. Sumate Sudasna, President of the Thailand Incentive and Convention Association (TICA); Mr. Thananchon Rojkittikhun, Department of Trade Negotiations, Ministry of Commerce; and high-level participants from government, Thailand’s private sector and associations.
Mr. Akapol Sorasuchart said, “One of the key shifts in the MICE industry has been the rapid growth in the business events industry. Moving forward, we can anticipate continuing growth not only in corporate and association meetings, and in B2B and B2C trade shows, but also in other business events, including mega-events such as the World Expo or the Formula 1 Racing. It is because of the growing significance of business events such as these that we chose the theme for this forum – ‘Business events as the next step of MICE in Thailand.’
“We expect this forum to accomplish three goals: first and foremost, to help stakeholders from both private and public sectors get acquainted with the latest market information and trends, to help enhance their business competitiveness and identify new business opportunities in an increasingly demanding environment.
“This forum will also discuss the implications of AEC 2015 for the MICE business and, of course, Thailand’s bid to host the World Expo 2020 mega-event and its many expected benefits to our country. Without a doubt, AEC will bring major challenges and opportunities for Thailand’s MICE sector which is why the theme of this forum – “Business Events: The Next Step of MICE in Thailand” – was chosen in order to highlight the strategic retooling that is needed now if the industry is to sustain its future competitiveness within the AEC.
“Thirdly, I hope the forum will serve to offer some more in-depth knowledge of the role and function of TCEB and the many different services we can offer the private sector. TCEB works closely with the industry and offers a wide range of financial, strategic and market support measures to support the MICE sector and also, of course, to promote and develop Thailand as an ideal and cost-effective global business events destination. Since TCEB was established in 2003, the industry has enjoyed double-digit growth; this year, we expect to welcome 720,000 business event travellers, who will create revenues of over 57.6 billion baht, or just over US$1.92 billion.”
ICCA’s CEO Mr. Martin Sirk will talk about “Competitiveness in tomorrow’s global meetings industry is all about thinking both inside and outside the box.”
ICCA’s CEO will make the case for why the competitive tools, strategies and mindsets that have served industry suppliers and destinations for well over the last two decades are simply not going to be adequate for the super-competitive environment that everyone will be facing over the next ten years, and will offer his thoughts on what strategic steps are needed to build long-term success. Brainpower will become the key asset as the meetings industry becomes ever-more recognised as a key component of the global “knowledge economy”.
TCEB recently submitted to Cabinet its draft MICE Industry Policy, which incorporates a 5-year roadmap to further develop the industry. The Roadmap signals a change in direction – moving from MICE to business events – as the next phase in the industry’s evolution. TCEB projects business visitor numbers to increase by 75% by the year 2016, with revenues up by 87%. According to the 5-year Roadmap, the business events industry is poised to play an increasingly important role in Thailand’s broader economic growth. At present, the industry accounts for 9.13% of total tourism revenues but this share is expected to grow to 18.35% – 130.92 billion baht – by 2016.
In conclusion, Mr. Akapol commented “Mr. Sirk has a wealth of knowledge and experience at a global level. We actually indebted to him for agreeing to join this event and to share with us some of the latest issues and trends in the global meetings industry. Having seen Thailand’s potential and readiness to host mega-events such as the World Expo 2020, we are confident that ICCA will be happy to support Thailand as AEC’s meetings industry hub”.
The Meetings Industry forum 2011: Business Events: The next step of MICE in Thailand will be held on Friday 2nd September 2011 at Paragon Cineplex Cinema 6, Siam Paragon, Bangkok, Thailand.
BOI-TCEB to host CEO Forum at BOI Fair 2011
World Expo 2020 Pavilion promotes Thailand as destination for investment and MICE events, and confirms Thailand’s potential to host World EXPO 2020
Bangkok: August 2011 – Thailand’s BOI Fair 2011 will showcase the latest technologies of the future, and also features a summit of over 300 business leaders from around the world, including international organizations such as UNCTAD and ASEAN. Participants attending the CEO FORUM will discuss the investment environment in Thailand and opportunities in the new global landscape. Also, at this year’s BOI Fair, the EXPO 2020 Pavilion will serve as a springboard to launch further developments in Thailand’s bid to host the World Expo 2020. The pavilion will help raise awareness and mobilize public participation in bringing this mega-event to Thailand.
Announcing the BOI Fair 2011 “Going Green for the Future”, Dr. Atchaka Sribunrueang, Secretary-General of Thailand’s Board of Investment (BOI), revealed that the event – to be held on 10-25 November 2011 at Impact Muang Thong Thani – will be a joint effort between the BOI and the Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB). TCEB is the main state agency responsible for promoting Thailand’s international conference industry. The two agencies have joined hands to convene the CEO Forum on 10 November 2011, the opening day of the BOI Fair 2011.
This year’s CEO Forum for business leaders from around the world is considered as the flagship event of the BOI Fair 2011. Apart from its importance in facilitating dialogue and building linkages among business and government leaders, the event offers a superb opportunity for the government to build investor confidence both domestically and internationally. In particular, the CEO Forum and the “Going Green for the Future” theme of the BOI Fair are expected to stimulate increased FDI flows into Thailand, especially in sectors contributing to sustainable development.
Keynote speakers at the CEO Forum will include leaders of international organizations and top executives from Thailand’s leading companies and multinational corporations, including Dr. Supachai Panitchpakdi, Secretary General of UNCTAD; executives from Minebea Group of Companies, Japan; Dow Chemical Co. (USA) as well as Mr. Karn Trakunhun, President of the Siam Cement Group; senior representatives of companies investing in Thailand, and many leading banks.
In addition, BOI will organize an Honorary Investment Advisor (HIA) meeting for the first time, to be held on 9 November 2011. This will serve as a forum for Thailand’s government leaders to discuss BOI’s 5-year investment promotion strategy with renowned global experts.
Mr. Akapol Sorasuchart, President of Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (Public Organization), said, “TCEB is delighted to join the BOI in organizing this HIA meeting and CEO Forum as part of our mission to promote the hosting of international MICE events by our public sector. It is also one of the major objectives of TCEB’s “Believe in Thailand” campaign, which was launched last year. TCEB joined with BOI in creating a forum for the world’s top corporate executives and foreign investors to meet with government leaders, policymakers and leaders of Thailand’s private sector. In addition to promoting investment in Thailand, the event represents an important opportunity to build investor confidence. The world’s top executives will see for themselves Thailand’s potential and readiness as an ideal destination for international MICE events.”
Thailand is an ideal MICE destination for four main reasons: – 1) Thailand’s long and successful track record and strong professional expertise in organizing world-class MICE business events; 2) Superb infrastructure, accommodation and facilities; 3) A diverse choice of event venues in major cities (including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket, Pattaya and Cha-am), and the exclusive attractions of Khao Yai, Hat Yai, Samui, and Kanchanaburi; and 4) a wide range of business opportunities creating additional added value and investment.
As co-organizer of the HIA Meeting and CEO Forum, TCEB has provided funding for the meeting, including speaker fees, and will also host a number of other major activities, such as luncheon and a reception dinner for 300 top executives and investors both from Thailand and from around the world. Also, TCEB’s marketing strategy will focus on participants at the event in order to build investor confidence and attract corporate MICE events from around the world to Thailand. It is also an opportunity to present Thailand to global CEOs through TCEB’s plans for promotional activities, such as roadshows and familiarization trips.
Mr Akapol added, “The highlight of the 2011 BOI Fair is the launch of the EXPO 2020 Pavilion. The aim is to showcase Thailand’s candidacy to host the World Expo 2020 mega-event to the public. Under the theme ‘Redefine Globalisation – Balanced Life, Sustainable Living’, the 2,000m2 Pavilion will offer an overview of the World Expo event itself, as well as Thailand’s history with the World Expo 2020, and a launch of the concept masterplan. The event will feature a ‘nightshow’ with spectacular special effects every evening. We anticipate the Pavilion will attract over 107,000 visitors over the 16 days of the event.
TCEB has also extended an invitation to Mr. Vicente Gonzalez Loscertales, Secretary General of the Bureau of International Expositions (BIE), Paris. Mr. Loscertales will join the evening welcome banquet on 9 November, and will deliver a special keynote address on the topic “Innovation, Economic Impact and Investment Opportunities from the World Expo” to the audience of senior executives that will join the CEO Forum, including leaders of the Board of Trade, Federation of Thai Industries, members of the Thai Chambers of Commerce, and the Stock Exchange of Thailand. TCEB has also invited Mr. Loscertales to preside over the official opening of the EXPO 2020 Pavilion. As part of the itinerary for Mr. Loscertales’ visit to Thailand, TCEB has also organized a visit to Ayutthaya, the proposed host of the Expo 2020, in order to experience the Loy Krathong celebration and see the province’s potential and readiness to host the World EXPO 2020, on 10 November. Mr. Loscertales will also meet with representatives of the new government.
“The EXPO 2020 Pavilion is the perfect springboard to announce Thailand’s readiness to host the World Expo 2020 to a global audience of very high caliber. It is also a chance to establish the World Expo 2020 as not only a part of the national agenda for our government, but also as a part of the hearts and minds of all Thai people. The Expo 2020 must be an Expo that belongs to the people. Right now, we feel that Thailand has a good chance of winning this bid to host the event, especially if we work together. In particular, we have very strong government backing, and, compared to the other countries who have declared their intention to bid, we have made excellent progress,” Mr. Akapol concluded.
The BOI Fair 2011 will take place from 10-25 November 2011 at IMPACT Muang Thong Thani. The CEO Forum will be held on 10 November at the Diamond Ballroom, Hall 9, whilst the EXPO 2020 Pavilion will be situated next to the lake at No. P 71-74. The TCEB exhibition booth will be located in Challenger Hall 2, where TCEB’s activities and Thailand’s MICE Industry will be showcased in a 500m2 exhibition booth. The booth will feature TCEB’s key strategies and initiatives, including promotion of domestic MICE events (D-MICE), Creative MICE, and including the full range of support services that TCEB offers to the MICE industry in Thailand.
Thailand Names ‘Hua-Hin’ as its ‘LUXURY MICE’ Destination to the World
TCEB conducts “Connection Plus 2011”to endlessly inspire success with a ‘chic & charming’ MICE destination.
Bangkok/ Hua Hin– Successfully positioning the Thai MICE industry on the world stage,
the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau, (TCEB), today announced “Hua Hin” as one of the five carefully selected luxurious destinations, in its latest MICE marketing initiative, especially designed for untapped niche markets. This is in parallel with the bureau’s ‘Connection Plus 2011’ programme. Boasting sparkling beaches and an energetic vision, Hua Hin truly embodies its status as one of the country’s favorite beachside destinations by royalty and members of the Thai elite, as well as offering first class infrastructure and accommodation. TCEB is confident the new ‘Luxury MICE’ campaign will help add 15-20 per cent growth to the overall MICE industry in Thailand, or an equivalent of 129 million USDin 2011.
Hua Hin, among other selected cities including Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Samui, promises to provide a truly captivating experience, high standards and unspoiled natural landscapes. Known today for its quiet beaches, quaint towns and charming heritage, Hua Hin’s infrastructure and accommodation is some of the best in Thailand. Hua Hin boasts more than 11,000 hotel rooms, with venues for business events that can accommodate up to 5,000 guests. The town is conveniently located just two and an half hours drive from Bangkok. Hua Hin also boasts an airport, which is served by a growing domestic network.
Mr Akapol Sorasuchart, President of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau, revealed at the Connection Plus 2011 that, “Thailand’s MICE industry has offered endless possibilities and inspired success for both business and leisure travellers for a long time. In 2011, the country turned another page in its service history by lifting its status and moving into the luxury destinations category. This shift was due to an adjustment in global trends; in 2011, the global meetings industry will see a gradual shift to high-end meetings. Thailand is in the position to offer luxurious destinations and services for a reasonable and competitive price.”
Despite the global financial crisis and domestic political situation, Thailand has outshone competitors with its leadership position as ASEAN’s top trade fair destination for five consecutive years, according to market research conducted by UFI in 2010. This is partially thanks to positive factors including increasing foreign confidence, which was boosted by the government-backed project ‘Believe in Thailand’ in order to assure the readiness of all Thai MICE stakeholders. Since the launch of campaign, the bureau has noticed an upwards trend in the Thai MICE industry recovery. It also foresees a paradigm shift in luxurious MICE activities, which resulted in the introduction of the exciting ‘LUXURY MICE’ campaign in 2011.
At the Connection Plus 2011 Familiarization Trip, all participating delegates will receive first-hand experience of sophisticated LUXURY MICE offering including the luxurious accommodation, award-winning MICE facilities, as well as five stars attractions. In addition, more than 150 delegates will join hands in a Corporate Social Responsibility programme to raise awareness of the importance of education by helping to build a sustainable clay classroom for a local school and underprivileged students in Hua Hin, Prachuab Kirikhan Province. The innovative initiatives and activities have been carefully selected to highlight Hua Hin as a world-class MICE destination in Thailand and an alternative to an already well-established city such as Bangkok.
In 2010, Thailand’s MICE industry enjoyed overall growth of 15 per cent year-on-year, with more than 679,585 MICE visitors from around the world. This year, TCEB expects to welcome 720,000 MICE visitors to Thailand, generating 1.9 billion USD in revenues
“Along with the Thailand’s readiness and award-winning facilities, we are confident that the brand new initiative will help us to achieve our targets for 2011 and exceed the ‘LUXURY MICE’ expectations of all our visitors. This campaign also reflects our commitment to further the Thai MICE industry as a whole and to leverage our capacity to meet international demands, and to promote ASEAN as the world’s most preferred MICE destination,” Mr Akapol added.
Hua Hin is one of Thailand’s most celebrated beach resort towns, frequented by Thai Royals and elite members of society, and situated approximately 200 kilometres south of Bangkok. Located in Prachuap Khiri Khan Province, visitors to Hua Hin can enjoy a wealth of satellite attractions, luxurious accommodation and award-winning facilities. The prestigious city also plays host to the full-time residence of His Majesty the King of Thailand.
In addition, Thailand recently revealed its candidature of Ayutthaya as the site for World Expo 2020. Thailand’s proposed theme for the 2020 Expo is “Redefine Globalisation: Balanced Life, Sustainable Living.”
Thailand Encourages Indonesians to Maximise Businesses in ASEAN through its 5 Key Trade Shows
TCEB initiates collaboration through exhibition platform aiming to create long-term mutual economic benefits between Thailand and Indonesia
19th July 2011 – The Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) organised a business forum entitled “Maximise Your Business Opportunity in ASEAN through Thailand’s Champion Trade Shows” aiming to attract Indonesian visitors at its five ‘champion’ trade shows being supported by the bureau. It aims to enhance awareness of business opportunities in Thailand and open the door to the ASEAN market through the country’s exhibition platform. On this occasion, Thailand and Indonesia saw agreements in exhibition industry with an aim to create long-term mutual economic benefits.
The symposium is part of TCEB’s support of Thailand’s exhibition industry under its ‘Better the Best’ campaign, which is being implemented for the second consecutive year. Aiming to emphasise the readiness of Thailand for ASEAN integration in 2015, the efficiency and capacity of the nation will be shown through the exhibition of “champion shows”.
Ms. Supawan Teerarat, Director of Exhibitions at TCEB said, “Last year, the Better the Best campaign successfully generated more than US$2,281 million in economic value through business negotiations concluded by participants of the events. This year, TCEB is continuing with the campaign and is providing maximum support to the five trade shows including Bangkok International Gift Fair & Bangkok International Houseware (BIG + BIH), METALEX, Propak Asia, Renewable Energy Asia and VIV Asia which have total trade value as high as US$146.8 million. Likewise, we also aggregate Thai Exhibition Association with ASPERAPI here today at the Forum with an aim to bridge and cultivate relationship with Indonesian association and business partners as well as to share knowledge and experience of development of exhibition industry in Thailand and region.”
Each show under Better the Best campaign is considered the crème-de-la-crème of its own industry and has already grown to become the regional leader in its category when considering the number of visitors, average fair size and average annual revenue it generates.
Indonesia ranks Thailand’s third largest trade partner in ASEAN and eighth largest trade partner in the world. Thailand’s total trade with Indonesia in 2010 was valued at US$ 13.02 billion, around 54 per cent increase from 2009. Indonesia is amongst the top five countries that send the highest number of visitors to attend the trade show in Thailand in 2010.
“With the economic integration and free-trade agreement expected to be completed in 2015 following the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), Thailand will be at its center to see the development of markets and expansion of the economy through exhibitions. This year, TCEB will direct the operation of Better the Best towards the initiation of deals between foreign buyers and exhibitors. To begin with, the ASEAN+6 countries will be targeted. The holding of events will definitely promote and increase trading potential and investment between Thailand and Indonesia through exhibitions that will eventually generate mutual growth for our industry,” added Ms. Supawan.
With TCEB as a facilitator, today Thailand and Indonesia see collaboration in exhibition industry with an aim to enhance long-term economic relationship between the two countries.Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Indonesia Exhibition Companies Association (ASPERAPI) and Thailand Exhibition Association (TEA) to establish business collaboration between Thailand and Indonesia’s exhibition industry.
Furthermore, in order to provide valuable experiences while attending Thailand’s trade shows, TCEB is offering visitors a promotion under the Extra Night, Extra Smile campaign. Visitors from Indonesia can enjoy one night complimentary stay at the trade show organizer’s appointed hotels when staying minimum of 2 nights to visit the show. Additionally, Thai International Airways, TCEB’s strategic partner, has also offered MICE promotion for Indonesian business travelers to visit the shows in Thailand. Other privileges in transportation, shopping and a line-up of entertainments throughout Bangkok are also in place to maximise exhibition visitors’ experiences in Thailand.
In addition, TCEB also introduced another marketing campaign called “100 A-HEAD”for travel agents, trade associations and Chambers of Commerce. TCEB will provide support of US$ 100 for bringing group of at least 15 visitors to attend trade exhibitions in Thailand. To apply for these two campaigns, please visit www.tceb.or.th/exhibitions
At present, Thailand’s exhibitions industry continues to lead rivals in ASEAN through its 80 events each year, ranking Thailand above competitors in the region. Thailand’s leadership of the ASEAN exhibitions industry also extends to other aspects, such as exhibition space, which combines to be up to 466,500 square meters each year, and average fair size, totaling approximately 6,220 square meters per exhibition.
TAT FINALISES MARKETING ACTION PLAN 2012, TARGETS 19 MILLION VISITORS IN 2012
Bangkok, July, 2011 — The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has approved a strategic plan to drive tourism growth in an era of unprecedented change in the global operating environment and regular occurrences of unpredictable external factors. Also agreed at the TAT’s annual Marketing Action Plan 2012 (MAP) meeting held between 23-26 June 2011 was a marketing plan that will take advantage of emerging opportunities in a world of changing demographics and technological innovation.
According to Tourism Authority of Thailand Governor Mr Suraphon Svetasreni, “Responding to constant and incessant change has become our biggest challenge. As the country’s primary tourism marketing agency responsible for driving growth in one of Thailand’s most important socio-economic sectors, we spent the entire meeting trying to identify ways of ensuring an effective and efficient marketing plan.”
He said the TAT has set a 2012 target of 19.5 million international tourist arrivals, generating approximate revenue of 760 billion Baht (24.85 billion USD) increasing around 9 per cent above 2011. The target for domestic tourism is 93 million trips with revenue of 453 billion Baht (14.70 billion USD).
For the year 2012, TAT will still use the successful “Amazing Thailand Always Amazes You” theme, to build up the country’s strong brand and positioning as a destination that offers a unique culture, a wide variety of experiences to visitors and to reinforce the many aspects of “Thainess” that are so appealing to visitors from all over the world.
After discussing ways to adapt and adjust the plans in accordance with changes in the underlying conditions and the frequent occurrence of global and local crises, the six strategies were identified as thus:
1) Promote balanced tourism in various dimensions, 2) generate sustainable growth for tourism income, 3) strengthen and sharpen Thailand’s brand image, 4) develop tourism in line with a creative economy, 5) develop stronger and more effective partnership networks, and 6) optimize internal management.
Under the broad strategic umbrella, the TAT has identified eight specific marketing opportunities: 1) Expanding the high-income market, 2) expanding niche customer-segments, 3) encouraging repeat travellers, 4) attracting new markets, 5) helping potential partners with win-win projects, 6) enhancing use of IT media applications, 7) helping products and services to attract quality tourists, and 8) increasing the capacity of industry stakeholders to deal with change and tap new opportunities.
Some of the specific activities that will be carried out to achieve these plans include the following:
- Expanding niche markets: Create awareness amongst and offer products to niche market customer segments; such as, honeymooners in the European market, couples seeking romance in the Asian market, and the health and wellness sector in the American market.
- Attracting new markets: Expand the number of first-time travellers to Thailand in both the traditional and emerging source market countries. This will include the expanding female workforce in the Asian markets and the senior citizens group in Europe and America.
- Using IT media applications: Optimise the use of digital media to reach customers at any time and any place. The TAT will use digital media to reach and develop more powerful relationships among Thailand’s brand and customers. In addition to the consumers, B2B online activities will also be stepped up to bring buyers together with sellers.
- Stimulating domestic travel: Actuate the concept of travel with a “New Heart for a Sustainable Thailand”. The TAT hopes to shift the perception of Thai travellers and tourism owners and operators alike to a new awareness that will lead to sustainable tourism. The core tourism values that the TAT aims to build are to get domestic travellers to better appreciate Thailand’s culture, environment and heritage.
- Stimulating intra-regional travel: Expand the traditional channels of distribution into more online media that will help promote travel between the various regions and sub-regions; such as, ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) using Thailand as a hub.
- Organising activities to encourage better care and preservation of tourist attractions: To appeal to the growing market of environmentally-conscious travellers, the TAT will undertake campaigns to enhance the environmental sustainability of a number of rapidly growing destinations; such as, Koh Samui and various provinces in North and Northeast Thailand.
- Create activities for educational travel: This will focus on the learning experience of visiting Thailand’s historical spots; such as, the ancient kingdom of Ayutthaya, environmental spots like the mangrove forest in Chanthaburi province, prehistoric spots in Kalasin and Khon Kaen provinces, and cultural events; such as, the “International Candle Festival” in Ubon Ratchathani.
This year, domestic tourism will be a major focus of attention with stepped-up efforts to enhance the fun and appeal of travelling within the country. This will involve boosting the image of domestic travel, organising specific activities to promote it, publicising the many new emerging products and services that deliver value for money, and using domestic travel as a means of building national identity.
Mr Suraphon said, “In spite of all the changes taking place globally, the TAT still has many opportunities to increase visitor arrivals. We can see many positive factors; such as, continuing economic growth in many countries particularly in this region, the positive effect of people who do not cancel their travel plans but merely change their destinations in the event of unpredictable natural phenomena, and the progressive liberalisation of economic growth and transportation in the ASEAN region.
“In addition, Thailand continues to have a number of unique selling points in terms of a variety of tourist attractions, as a shopping paradise and for online marketing. These factors will help us to reach our targets.”
Mr Suraphon also said he was optimistic that the national elections in Thailand would generate a positive impact. “We are grateful to the private sector industry associations for inviting the Thai political parties to present their ideas and policies on tourism promotion. This was of immense help because it allowed all the political parties realise the importance of tourism for nationwide social and economic development.
“I am confident that no matter which government is formed after the elections, the importance of tourism will remain a vital part of any future national development platform.”

TCEB inspires success for the world’s luxury MICE business with five ‘chic & charming’ destinations
LONDON/ United Kingdom: May 2011 – The Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB) adds to the ‘Believe in Thailand’ campaign with its ‘Luxury MICE’ initiative, which is designed for a niche market. In this plan for market penetration, TCEB plans to expand its luxury presence with five splendid ‘chic & charming’ destinations comprising of Bangkok, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Samui, that promise to provide a truly captivating experience, high standards and unspoiled natural landscapes. Beginning with the European market, the Bureau is confident that the initiative will add 15-20 per cent to Thailand’s MICE industry with the ‘Luxury MICE’ segment projected to contribute around GBP 80 million this year.
Thailand’s Meetings & Incentives industry has offered endless possibilities and inspired the success for both business and leisure for a long time. In 2011, the country turned another page in its service history by lifting its status and moving into the luxury destinations category. This shift was due to the change of the global trends; in 2011, the global meetings industry will see a gradual shift to high-end meetings. Thailand is in the position to offer luxurious destinations and services for a reasonable and competitive price.
Speaking at the Believe in Thailand: London Road Show, Mr. Akapol Sorasuchart, the President of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), revealed, “The change of the business traveller’s behavior drives our business. Thailand will always inspire and provide a unique experience for all kinds of business events. Apart from the successive ROI of every meeting and event, the business travellers will also seek more inspiration and expect more. This is the reason to present and market the “Luxury MICE” initiative to the global market, focusing first on the European market.”
Thailand has chosen five destinations in the country which traditionally have been popular meetings and incentives destinations and are well equipped to meet the needs of meetings participants and the industry. The five destinations have also been singled out because of their exclusive accommodation facilities, high-standard international facilities, unspoiled natural landscapes and luxury culinary delights. These are inclusive ofBangkok, Hua Hin, Chiang Mai, Phuket and Samui.
“In terms of the number, the luxury Meetings market grown continuously in Thailand over the past few years after the global economic recession. The visitors, especially from the long-haul markets, come in smaller groups for their meetings and incentives events but with more exclusivity and higher expectations. On average, the spending per head of Thailand’s meeting industry estimated at approximately GBP 1,240. With this initiative, we expect to increase the spending per head to up to GBP 1,625 per head. Altogether, we are confident that Thailand’s luxury meetings segment will contribute €90 million to the MICE industry,” added Mr. Akapol.
To promote the Luxury MICE segment, a series of activities have been set. Apart from promotion for recognition in the luxury market, the Bureau will conduct a Luxury Familiarization Trip, starting this June with the Russian market and again later this year, targeting the European region as a whole. All these programmes are set to offer the target audience a unique, exclusive and first-hand experience as well as the chance inspect the country’s luxury MICE products. Furthermore, the Bureau has integrated its promotion of this niche with its annual events, such as the ‘Connections Plus’programme, the yearly event during which Thailand hostskey buyers, corporate clientele and members of media. This year, Connections Plus is aimed at enhancing the global recognition of Hua Hin in terms of its readiness in MICE industry and the splendid landscape of the destination.
According to the statistic report, the Meetings and Incentives industries have the biggest share in Thailand’s MICE industry, accounting for 41%. Last year, Thailand welcomed around 79,797 European MICE visitors; Europe has long been one of the major markets for the Thai MICE industry. With the expectation of the 720,000 MICE visitor arrivals to Thailand in 2011, a total of 100,800 visitors are expected to be from Europe; a market share of 15% and an increase of 26% from 2010.
“Thailand has shown over the years that it is one of the best destinations for UK MICE professionals who are looking for diversity in their business events. UK is one of the Thailand’s key markets and accounts for around 10 per cent of total European MICE visitors to Thailand. For maximum UK market penetration this year, the Bureau is here conducting a Thai government-backed roadshow: “Believe in Thailand: UK Road Show 2011” to London and Manchester during 19-20 May, bringing 18 Thai MICE professionals to conduct their business and negotiate with UK buyers. In 2011, the market is expected to grow to 47 per cent accumulated – 10,600 UK MICE visitors – generating revenues of around GBP 13.2 millions,” concluded Mr. Akapol.
In addition, here in the UK, Thailand reveals its candidature of Ayutthaya as the site for World Expo 2020. Thailand’s proposed theme for the 2020 Expo is “Redefine Globalisation: Balanced Life, Sustainable Living.”

Thailand’s Exhibitions Industry Opens the Door to ASEAN Business Opportunities with 5 Key Strategic Sectors
TCEB uses ‘Better the Best’ initiative as a crucial engine to drive further economic growth
SINGAPORE/ 4th May 2011 – The Thailand Convention & Exhibition Bureau (TCEB), in collaboration with Singapore Business Federation (SBF), organised a business symposium entitled “Opportunities in 5 Key Business Sectors in Thailand”. The function aims to enhance awareness of business opportunities in Thailand and open the door to the ASEAN market through the country’s key industrial sectors.
This symposium is part of TCEB’s support of the Thailand’s exhibition industry under its ‘Better the Best’ campaign, which is being implemented for the second consecutive year. Aiming to emphasise the readiness of Thailand for ASEAN integration in 2015, the efficiency and capacity of the nation will be shown through the exhibition of “champion shows” , which will be in turn boost the economy of Thailand as a whole. The campaign also aims to further support the image of “Bangkok as the Exhibition City of ASEAN”.
Speaking at the symposium, Mr. Akapol Sorasuchart, President of the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau, said, “Last year, the Better the Best campaign successfully brought in more than US$2,281 million in economic value into Thailand through business negotiations concluded by participants of the events. This year, TCEB is continuing with the campaign and is providing maximum support to the five core industries that are part of the national agenda: livestock and agriculture, gift and decorative items, renewable energy, machine tools and metal working, and packaging technology, which have a value as high as US$146.8 million.”
“Singapore is considered a key market for Thailand’s MICE industry. Thailand has welcomed a significant number of Singaporean MICE visitors over the past five years. Singaporean visitors represent around 10% of the total MICE visitors from Asia every year, and the number is expected to grow by a substantial 31% in 2011,” added Mr. Akapol.
Ms. Supawan Teerarat, Director of Exhibitions at TCEB, told the symposium delegates that: “We are present here today to offer business opportunities through 5 champion international trade fairs of Thailand – Bangkok International Gift Fair & Bangkok International Houseware (BIG + BIH), METALEX, Propak Asia, Renewable Energy Asia, and VIV Asia – to business visitors in Singapore. The exhibitions are set to meet international standards regulated by the Global Association of the Exhibition Industry (UFI). Some of the events were certified as UFI Approved Events, which endorses and enhances the international competitiveness of Thailand’s exhibitions industry in the global market. In turn, the image of Bangkok as the destination of international trade fairs for ASEAN is being emphasized.”
“All five events are the gateways to trade and investment in each industry. The events not only urge the economy of the country to grow in successive and sustainable ways, but TCEB also believes that the campaign will add a growth of 15-20 percent to Thailand’s MICE industry. The number of foreign buyers, exhibitors and visitors into Thailand is expected to total of 27,181 people, which is expected to generate revenues of more than US$74.3 million,” concluded Mr. Akapol.
“The economic integration and free-trade agreement expected to be completed in 2015 offers Thailand a golden opportunity in terms of the development of markets and expansion of the economy through exhibitions. This year, TCEB will direct the operation of Better the Best towards the collaboration at the Government-to-Government level, as well as with certain state offices, in a way that leads to the initiation of deals between foreign buyers and exhibitors. To begin with, the ASEAN+6 countries will be targeted. The holding of events will definitely promote and increase trading potential and investment between countries through exhibitions that will eventually generate growth for our industry,” said Ms. Supawan.
Support for international trade exhibitions and exhibitors is currently being provided by TCEB through a range of promotions and offers under the Extra Night, Extra Smile campaign. Visitors can enjoy one night complimentary stay at the trade show organizer’s appointed hotels when staying minimum of 2 nights to visit the show. Additionally, Thai International Airways, TCEB’s strategic partner, has also offered MICE promotion for Singapore business travelers to visit the shows in Thailand. Other privileges in transportation, shopping and a line-up of entertainments throughout Bangkok are also offered to maximise exhibition visitors’ experiences in Thailand.
According to the latest statistics compiled by UFI, the exhibitions industry of Thailand continues to lead rivals in ASEAN with total of value of 10,508 million Baht gained through 75 events, putting Thailand above competitors in the region. Furthermore, Thailand has maintained the leadership in the exhibitions industry of ASEAN in other aspects, such as the exhibition space totaling up to 466,500 square metros each year, as well as having eight exhibition venues which are well-recognised by UFI. Thailand is therefore a market with high potential for the international exhibition industry in ASEAN and has the potential to further grow as the leader in this region. When considering the income earned from exhibition-related activities, Thailand is currently number 4 in Asia, after Hong Kong, China and Japan.

TAT HOSTS VISIT BY INTERNATIONAL FILM DIRECTORS TO HIGHLIGHT THAILAND’S ADVANTAGES AS A FILMING DESTINATION
Bangkok, March 27, 2011 — The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is continuing to promote the country as Asia’s leading shooting location as well as maintaining the momentum of filmmaking activities by inviting 23 foreign film industry leaders to visit Thailand. They will explore potential filming locations and facilities in the country’s central, northern and southern regions. TAT wants to ensure the film directors are familiar with the variety of landscapes Thailand offers and the comprehensive support infrastructure available for movie production.
Film directors from China, Hong Kong, India, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Russia, Sweden, the United States and Vietnam will spend the week of 27 March 27 to 3 April 2011 travelling from northern to southern Thailand. They will observe the country’s culture and lifestyles along with natural attractions; such as, mountains, beaches and islands. The film directors will also visit support infrastructure including lab facilities, recording studios and other service providers. A highlight of their trip will be a meeting with leading Thai film directors.
According to statistics from the Thailand Film Office, in 2010, the number of foreign film productions in Thailand grew by 16% while the value of these productions grew by 108%. A total of 578 foreign film crews shooting feature films, television series, documentaries, advertisements and music videos were on location in Thailand, generating revenue of about US$ 62 million (approx. 1.87 billion Thai Baht).
“While we reach millions of potential visitors through our regular marketing campaigns, films are a great way to highlight Thailand’s natural beauty and attractions. They can generate great interest in Thailand, with lasting memories related to these films. This strengthens the Thailand brand and encourages people to make their first visit, or come back again,” said TAT Governor Suraphon Svetasreni.
Among the hundreds of crews that filmed in the country last year, Thailand welcomed teams for Hollywood productions of “Mission Impossible” and “The Scorpion King 3.” In addition, to its natural attractions and varied landscapes, Thailand has the advantage of a solid infrastructure for both pre- and post-production including skilled people for audio visual effects, advanced equipment and qualified workers, as well as tremendous value for money. Domestic film and digital production in Thailand are also expanding under the government’s drive to develop a creative economy.
The Thai government has increased its support for the film sector. In November 2010, the Thai Cabinet agreed to waive fees for shooting permits on government-owned properties including national parks supervised by the Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department; along with properties under the Royal Forestry Department, Royal Irrigation Department, Fine Arts Department, Treasury Department, State Railway of Thailand, and Suvarnabhumi International Airport. This fee waiver will remain in effect until the end of December 2011, except for national parks, for which the fee waiver policy will expire on 1 December, 2011.
In 2011, TAT expects to maintain 9% growth in income from foreign tourists, with the number of international arrivals expected to reach 16.5 million by the end of this year. With Thailand’s strong domestic and international appeal as a filming destination, the country should remain at the forefront in this region.
