TORONTO, April 20 /CNW/ – The American College of Physicians (ACP) will hold its annual scientific meeting, Internal Medicine 2010, in Toronto, Ontario. More than 5,000 adult medicine specialists, subspecialists, medical students and allied health professionals will meet at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre (MTCC) from April 22-24, 2010.

“This will be the first year that Internal Medicine is hosted by Canada. We welcome our guests and we anticipate a strong representation by the Canadian medical community,” said Barry Smith, President & CEO of the MTCC. “And the event benefits our city: with the large number of participants coming in from the U.S., the economic impact will be over $10 million in visitor spending.”

Internists specialize in the prevention, detection and treatment of illnesses in adults. Internal Medicine 2010 features more than 250 scientific sessions, including an Opening Ceremony keynote presentation about equity and global health by James Orbinski, MD, a humanitarian activist and associate professor at the University of Toronto. Dr. Orbinski was the international president of Médecins Sans Frontières/Doctors Without Borders from 1998 to 2001. In 1999, he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize awarded to the organization for its pioneering approach to medical humanitarianism.

“In addition to our U.S. Chapters, ACP has a presence across Canada and in Latin America,” said ACP President, Joseph W. Stubbs, MD, FACP. “Toronto is an ideal city for us to explore issues in internal medicine – from clinical guidelines, to health care policies to combat-related illness – in an international context.”
