International consciousness conference comes to Brighton

Brighton has secured the 16th Annual Meeting of the Association for the Scientific Study of Consciousness (ASSC) which will be held at the University of Sussex with an expected 400 delegates attending the June 2012 conference.

The event was won with the help of neuroscientist and co-Director of the Sackler Centre for Consciousness Science, Anil Seth (D.Phil) at the University of Sussex. The international conference has previously been held in Toronto, Berlin and Taipei and is expected to generate an estimated £475,000 of economic benefit to the city.

“More importantly the conference will help showcase the city to a European and International delegation,” Darren Johnson, Convention Bureau Sales Manager explains: “Our city and our community have a consistent and proven track record for delivering spectacular events. We understand the importance of such events to the city, which is why we work so hard to make Brighton & Hove so attractive, accessible and competitive to organisers.”

The ASSC is an academic society which promotes rigorous research directed toward understanding the nature, function, and underlying mechanisms of consciousness. The ASSC includes members working in the fields of cognitive science, medicine, neuroscience, philosophy, and other relevant disciplines in the sciences and humanities.
