VANCOUVER HAS BEEN DESIGNATED 2011 “CULTURAL CAPITAL OF CANADA” by Federal Heritage Minister, James Moore, who praised Vancouver’s “vibrant cultural scene and wide range of activities.” A city known for internationally recognized cultural events such as the Vancouver International Folk Music Festival and the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, Vancouver is now also known for hosting Cultural Olympiad 2010, which was the biggest arts and culture event in Canadian history (held during the Vancouver 2010 Olympic & Paralympic Winter Games).

The designation comes with $1.75-million worth of federal funding, which the City of Vancouver plans to use to support a wide range of cultural events to celebrate the anniversary of the City of Vancouver’s incorporation on April 6, 1886. The 125 Vancouver celebrations will begin in January and continue throughout 2011. For more information on plans for the 125th anniversary, visit the City of Vancouver’s website: http://vancouver.ca/commsvcs/cultural/celebrate125/index.htm.
