The International Bureau of Capitals of Culture (IBOCC) declared Quito as the 2011 American Capital of Culture, with the aim of turning it into a regional referent and promoting the city worldwide. According to the Municipality, Quito has the largest, least-altered, and best-preserved historical center in America.
The announcement was officially made on the same day that Quito celebrated 32 years of its declaration as First World Heritage Site by the UNESCO, within the First Encounter of History and Conservation of the Built Heritage, which counted with the participation of exhibitors from Argentina, Canada, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, France and Holland.
This designation will allow for the promotion of Quito through more than 3,000 media announcements in media such as Antena 3 and the Discovery Channel Group, reaching millions of people around the world, thus giving acknowledgement of this capital city.
Furthermore, a project will be developed to select and promote Quito’s seven cultural and material heritage wonders, opening a great “window of opportunities” to promote the city.
