Tallinn University Hosts International Japanese Studies Conference

From August 24 to 27, Tallinn University will be hosting the 13th Conference of the European Association for Japanese Studies (EAJS). The triennial conference has become the largest forum outside Japan for anyone undertaking research on the country.

More than 700 participants from all over Europe as well as North America and Japan are attending the event, which will involve hundreds of presentations covering all fields of Japanese studies including linguistics, politics, economy, history, literature, arts and theatre.

The keynote speaker is Professor Ueno Chizuko of the University of Tokyo. Other renowned experts making presentations include Professor Arthur Stockwini, who managed the Nissan Institute of Japanese Studies at the University of Oxford for many years, and Professor Komori Yoichi, a well-known critic of contemporary Japanese culture and the country’s political system.

Tallinn University was chosen as the organizer of this year’s EAJS conference at the previous event at the University of Salento in Italy where it won out over competitors Krakow University and the University of Sheffield.

The European Association for Japanese Studies, which currently has 1,200 members, was established in 1973 with the aim of facilitating research and cooperation in Japanese studies in Europe.
