Showcasing Visit London’s commitment to supporting London talent, undergraduates from the London College of Communication have provided the illustrations for the Visit London Official City Guide 2011, produced by John Brown. John Brown has been working with Visit London for the past 6 years to create their suite of annual London guides.

An essential tool for first time or repeat visitors to London, the 2011 City Guide is themed around Only in London, Visit London’s ongoing campaign which seeks to highlight the hundreds of unique attractions, sights and experiences that can only be found in the capital.

Three students, who are currently on the LCC’s BA (Hons) Graphic and Media Design, Design for Illustration course, were selected to design various sections within the guide and have their work seen by visitors from all over the world. The City Guide has a circulation of 450,000 and is available in English, French, German, Spanish, Italian and Russian.

Naomi Wu, 23, Rich Sheehan, 22, and Karen Ho, 24, were hand-picked from the LCC’s undergraduate programme by John Brown’s art director, Clare Willis, and Paul Bowman, of the LCC and the Association of Illustrators. Willis says, “We felt that asking students to illustrate the City Guide was a brilliant way to show the young creative talent that is flourishing in London. Their work was of a very high standard and we are absolutely delighted with the finished product, as is Visit London.”

Split into geographical regions, such as ‘Only in Westminster’ and ‘Only in Shoreditch’, each section has been given a unique look and feel, drawing a spotlight on a number of once-in-a-lifetime experiences to be found in different areas around the city. The guides also provide a host of insider hints and tips for visitors including suggested itineraries with easy-to-follow routes as well as information on what to see and do in each area, including listings of top attractions, events and entertainment, shopping destinations, restaurants, bars and hidden gems.

Sally Chatterjee, CEO said:
‘Visit London is proud to support the work of home-grown London talent, and each of the designers chosen has done a brilliant job infusing each section with an individual flavour and energy, reflecting the rich diversity of our vibrant city.’

In addition to this project with Visit London, John Brown also nurtures new talent with an intern programme to facilitate writers, editors and designers at the start of their careers. This initiative follows John Brown’s work with Royal College of Art students across a variety of projects.
