Rhodes, Greece – The 2024 European Women’s Chess Championship officially kicked off yesterday in Rodos Palace, Rhodes, Greece, marking a historic moment with a record participation of 182 players from 35 different federations. This turnout makes it the largest European Women’s Chess Championship to date.

Celebratory Opening with Prominent Figures

The event began with a grand opening ceremony attended by notable chess and local government figures. ECU President Zurab Azmaiparashvili, Vice President Eva Rekova, Secretary General Theodoros Tsorbatzoglou, South Aegean Vice Governor Zisimos Delaportas, and Rhodes Vice Mayor Toppos Georgios graced the event. The ceremony featured the national anthem of Greece and the ECU anthem, setting a solemn and celebratory tone.

Tributes and Opening Rounds

The ceremony also included a poignant moment of silence in memory of Joanna Dworakowska, the three-time Polish Women’s Chess Champion and decorated international competitor who recently passed away. Following the tributes, President Azmaiparashvili officially declared the tournament open and expressed his gratitude towards the Greek Chess Federation and the Ippatos Chess Club of Rhodes for their exceptional organization.

Surprising Results and Promising Starts

The competition started strongly with the first round bringing numerous surprises and decisive outcomes. Among the notable upsets, WGM Maria Manakova triumphed over GM Nino Batsiashvili in a thrilling game that captivated spectators. Other notable games included draws by well-ranked players such as GM Bella Khotenashvili and IM Stavroula Tsolakidou, showcasing the intense competition and high level of play.
