Geneva – A World of its Own

Located at the western tip of Lake Geneva, at the foot of the Alps and the Jura mountains, Geneva is a beautiful city that never ceases to delight visitors. At the centre of the lakefront one can see a proud symbol of the city, the Water Fountain of Geneva (Jet d’eau de Genève) with its spectacular blast of water shooting 140 metres into the sky. Along the lakefront promenade there’s a parade of hotels and restaurants amongst a sublime landscape of fountains, flowers, and parks. The famous Flower Clock, one of Switzerland’s most photographed attractions, is not to be missed. Its seconds hand is the largest in the world!

Geneva has a history of hosting international meetings and is known worldwide as the capital of peace, the European headquarters of the United Nations, and the home of the International Committee of the Red Cross. Geneva’s art and culture compare favourably with those of any of the world’s major cities. Its 40 public and private museums, numerous theatres (including the Grand-Théâtre, one of Europe’s first musical stages), and countless art galleries offer events year round. In summer, the lakefront pulses for three weeks to the rhythm of the music and fairs of the famous Geneva Festival. The world-famous festival comes to a close with one of the most beautiful firework displays in the world.
A few minutes from town, those who love fresh air and fine wine will delight in the green countryside surrounding Geneva’s vineyards, the third most extensive in Switzerland and known for their excellent wines.

For sports-lovers, the region has something for everyone: water sports of all kinds, golf, cycling, mountain hikes, paragliding, rafting, skiing in winter, and much more. For those who prefer to watch, major annual meets include the Geneva Marathon, the Bol d’Or Mirabaud regatta, the CSI-W international equestrian competition, the Course de l’Escalade and Courses du Mandement footraces, the International Supercross and the slowUp, to name but a few.
At night, the city puts on its best face, giving night birds a thousand choices for fun. While, at first glance, the streets may seem calm and serene, entertainment seekers will find a multitude of trendy bars, cabarets, discos and fashionable nightclubs offering entertainment to everyone’s taste!
