First company to introduce electric car rental in Copenhagen

It is now possible to rent an electric car for private use in Copenhagen. The car rental company Sixt is behind this new green initiative and right now they have an offer you can’t refuse!

Copenhagen is world famous as a biking city, but now you can be eco-conscious as a visitor to the Danish capital even if you do not want to cycle. Sixt car rental is offering electric car hire with free parking (electric cars park for free throughout Copenhagen) – for only €13 per day!

The only difference between an electric car and a conventional petrol-driven car is that the electric car runs on electricity, has a very low noise level and has a lower maximum speed. On a full charge the Citroen C1 EV’IE – the model provided by Sixt  – can cover 80-100 km on a single charge, and has a top speed of approx. 100 km /h.

The cars can be recharged for free at all public charging stations with an ordinary 220-volt outlet. CEO of Sixt Car Rental Denmark, Kasper Gjedsted, says:

“The electric car provides freedom of movement at a very low cost which neither public transport nor taxis can match.”

Environment Metropolis

Copenhagen is riding a “green wave” right now. It’s residents’ enthusiastic use of bicycles, their consumption of organic food and the ongoing efforts to reduce CO2 levels are just a few examples of Copenhageners’ top environmental priorities – all of which are gaining awareness outside of Denmark.

For instance, Hyundai has now selected Copenhagen to be the first city in the world outside of South Korea to test their new hydrogen car. Copenhagen is one of the few cities in the world where hydrogen cars can be refuelled, something which is of course crucial for testing the new cars.

By 2025, Copenhagen is aiming to become the world’s first carbon-neutral capital, which is why sustainable transport is crucial to the city. Currently, carbon emissions are responsible for 20% of the city’s combined CO2 output, which is why hydrogen cars are going to play an important role.

On two wheels
In May 2007, Copenhagen was the first city in the world to be named a Bike City – an accolade which further underlines the city’s ambition to be thought of as the world’s most cycle-friendly destination.

A remarkable 36% of the Copenhagen population uses bikes as their preferred means of transportation for commuting to work or school every day. In total, that amounts to 1.1 million bicycle kilometres covered by the Copenhageners on the city’s 350 kilometres of biking lanes daily, which of course helps lower the city’s overall carbon emission.

Organic food consumption on the rise
When it comes to organic food, Copenhagen has set a new world record: 64% (2010) of food consumption in the city’s public institution is organic, and interest in organic restaurants, cafes and delis is constantly growing in the city. For private households consumption is 23%. By 2015, 90% of food consumption in the city’s public institutions will be organic.

High hopes for the future
The future looks bright as there is both political and popular support for Copenhagen’s vision to become the world’s eco-metropolis.
