SAN JUAN, July 21, 2011 – From July 27 through August 5th, Puerto Rico and the Puerto Rico Convention Center Pedro Rosselló will be the host site of the 46th General Assembly and 43rd World Chemistry Congress of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry. The concurrent programs will bring together leading scientists from around the globe, including seven Nobel Prize winners in Chemistry and is a cornerstone event of the 2011 International Year of Chemistry, a year-long celebration of the achievements of chemistry and its contribution to the well-being of humankind.

This ‘citywide’ convention, which will bring an estimate 2,000 – 2,500 local and international delegates to the greater San Juan area, was brought to the Island through the Puerto Rico Convention Bureau in conjunction with the Colegio de Quimicos (CQPR) de Puerto Rico. In conjunction with the IUPAC activities, CQPR will also host its 70th Annual Conference and Exhibition, and is a main supporter of the IUPAC program in Puerto Rico.

The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) aims to advance the worldwide aspects of the chemical sciences and to contribute to the application of the chemistry in the service of mankind. The history of the congress dates back to 1894. The Congress will include plenary lectures by several Nobel Laureates in Chemistry with a scientific program that includes concurrent sessions, posters, scientific symposia’s continuing education courses, contact forums, career and networking opportunities.

Official convention hotels include the Sheraton Puerto Rico Hotel & Casino, the Conrad San Juan Condado Plaza, Courtyard Marriott Miramar and the Quality Inn El Portal. With 3,036 room nights booked at these properties, the group’s contribution to Puerto Rico’s local economy is estimated at $2.7 million.

A special element of the conference includes a Young Scientists program. Bringing nearly 30 young scientists to the Island, the program seeks to encourage young chemist’s and scientists in allied fields of chemical sciences to participate at the 43rd IUPAC Congress in Puerto Rico, while showcasing the many opportunities for careers in chemistry and biotech available in Puerto Rico.

Many of Puerto Rico’s top academic institutions and government organizations have worked together to support this historic gathering on the Island. Academic sponsors of the IUPAC General Assembly and World Chemistry Congress include Colegio de Quimicos de Puerto Rico, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Puerto Rico, Caribbean University, Universidad InterAmericana de Puerto Rico, Universidad Metropolitana, Recinto Universitario de Mayagüez and Universidad del Turabo. Puerto Rico government sponsors include Comision Especial Conjunta Sobre Donvativos Legislativos, Department of Economic Development and Commerce, Puerto Rico Tourism Company and the Puerto Rico Industrial Development Company.
