Highlands & Islands Airports Ltd (HIAL) believes that Amsterdam will continue to be a popular destination for travellers, city break explorers, holidaymakers and business people in 2012.

According to HIAL, the Netherlands capital city remains a popular location for people to travel to thanks to its broad appeal and rich culture. It says that thanks to the city’s eclectic nightlife, museums, architecture, attractions and food, Amsterdam looks set to continue in attracting visitors from the UK and beyond.

“The flights we operate from Inverness to Amsterdam are always extremely popular,” commented a HIAL spokesperson. “From the festivals and parades to the canals and coffee shops, there is quite simply something for everyone. We take passengers looking for quiet breaks, sightseeing, nightlife and much more. The city has had something of resurgence in recent years, embracing its culture after a period of soul-searching. It is relaxed, fun and full of adventure, so we fully anticipate a slew of bookings for 2012.”

Given that a number of companies allocate specific annual leave to their staff at the start of the calendar year to avoid clashes and shortages, many people will be looking to take advantage of cheap flights by booking their holidays early. Even those without allocated weeks off will seek to capitalise on discounts and deals being offered by airlines and travel companies.

HIAL said: “January is always a busy time for us. Once Christmas has come and gone, people tend to turn their attention to the summer and where they want to go for their holiday. We expect to be taking many bookings for families, solo travellers and groups of friends planning their trips at the start of the year.”

Amsterdam is always popular with two other types of groups: stag and hen parties. Every year, thousands of parties go on Amsterdam breaks to bask in the vibrancy and liberality of the city’s nightlife. The city is awash with fantastic coffee shops and restaurants, meaning all stags and hens can be given a great send off towards married life.
