TORONTO, July 22, 2013 /CNW/ – The award-winning Metro Toronto Convention Centre will host the 111th National Medical Association (NMA) Annual Convention and Scientific Symposium, the largest assembly of African American physicians in the world.  As many as 8,000 physicians, health care professionals and guests from across the United States and Canada will attend the Convention in downtown Toronto July 27 to 31.

“The NMA’s Annual Convention is held in a different city each year. Toronto was added to the roster because of the city’s rich blend of cultures, the diversity of attractions and its proximity to the Eastern half of the United States,” said Rahn K. Bailey, president of the Washington-based NMA. “We are excited about the prospect of building alliances with physicians of African descent that live and work in the Greater Toronto Area and look forward to welcoming our Canadian colleagues.”

Founded in 1895, the NMA is the largest and oldest medical association in the United States, devoted to advancing medical science, African American health and access to equitable and quality health care for all people. The Convention will be a platform for releasing landmark findings on Hepatitis C and a report from the Summit on African American Health, “The State of African American Health: The National Action Plan.”

“The Metro Toronto Convention Centre is pleased to host the highly respected National Medical Association Annual Convention and Scientific Symposium,” says Barry Smith, president and CEO, Metro Toronto Convention Centre. “We are confident the delegates will enjoy Toronto’s multiculturalism and our many wonderful local attractions. We are also pleased to be bringing more than $21 million of additional economic activity to Toronto during the city’s peak tourist season.”
